The Kent team reads like a who’s who of England contenders, including; Bell-Drummond, Denly, Northeast, Billings and Coles. Recent results show that the pieces are starting to come together in this longer format, and that the success that they have found in limited overs cricket could spill over into the four day game. Lancashire on the other hand, face a balancing act. Their most successful players have tended to be their older players in this competition. The South African axis of power springs to mind. Ashwell Prince, who turns 100 next week, and Alviro Petersen have got huge runs this season. They have been supported by the all-round abilities of James Faulkner. The problem that Lancashire may face here is the sheer amount of cricket their best players have been required to play in recent days. T20 Blast Finals take a lot out of you, particularly for players like Ashwell Prince. Pressure is finally off Kent. They are out of everything and only have to play cricket to win individual games. That is a mindset which could well suit their group. I think that they could spring a surprise here. Talisman Marcus Trescothick seems to be fading, while signings like Jim Allenby and Tom Cooper have been a huge let down. James Hildreth has been their only shining light this year, providing the regular contributions which have evaded his team mates. Hampshire have turned a corner and are beginning to demonstrate some real form. We tipped them to turn over Durham last time out and they obliged, transmitting their limited overs form into the longer format. They have the advantage here because in Fidel Edwards and Ryan McLaren they have two international quality bowlers with their tails up and a batting order that combines promise with proven ability. They will be in Division One next year. There is a chance that Somerset can reverse their fortunes but it seems very unlikely against a side on the up. Contrived results for example. All season everyone squeezes every available point from the opposition, then in the last couple of weeks innings are forfeited and chases are engineered to make results possible. Last week Hampshire benefited from this strange practice only to fail to get over the line against Yorkshire, who reached their target of 300 with ease. The interesting market is the first innings lead. Hampshire simply have to score 400+ to claim the bonus points they need to stand any chance of pulling off a miracle. Far be it from us to say that a toss may be orchestrated so that they bat first, but there is a strong chance that in order to craft a result, Notts will declare short and that said result will hinge on a fourth innings chase. Believe us, it’s not as far fetched as it sounds.
