After the lengthy World Cup another lengthy tournament gets underway next week with the latest season of the Indian Premier League starting. Only the Chennai Super Kings have defended it and that was four years ago but the Knight Riders will have a significant advantage if they get to the final because that final will be held at their home ground Eden Gardens. We know the Knight Riders know how to get the job done because they’ve won two of the last three renewals and in notoriously slow conditions at the Gardens the likes of Narine, Botha, Shakib et al should tie opposing batsmen down. Although Jacques Kallis is taking on just a mentoring role in this tournament the Knight Riders still have plenty of batting at their disposal and they look decent value to defend the title now that Narine has been confirmed as a runner. Rarely is Raina outside the top 10 in the run scorers in this tournament even when the Super Kings don’t go all the way to the final but they look to have a leading chance this season and that should bode well for his chances. Raina is recently married so life is good for the left hander at the minute and I expect him to be heavily involved in the run scoring lists come the business end of this tournament. He took nine wickets in those matches which was a good return, so much so that he is in Delhi for the whole season this year. Tahir comes into the tournament off the back of a successful World Cup where he took 15 wickets in conditions which didn’t really suit spin bowling and even at the very top level there aren’t many batsmen who can pick his googly let alone score off it. With the likes of Mohammed Shami and Zaheer Khan able to keep it tight and take wickets teams might need to attack Tahir more which is when he’s at his best and at 25/1 he should be a leading player when it comes to wicket taking in this tournament. Shakib-al-Hasan is available for this match which is another boost. Mumbai’s form away from home in recent seasons has been pretty rotten so they are going to need to overcome that poor record if they are to be competitive here. I’m not convinced by them though and expect Kolkata to win this one. If they gel quickly they should go ok this season but there’s too many doubts to get involved in the match itself although there’s no doubt Delhi are value if they have gelled. Instead both sides have a number of big hitters and with fresh wickets in the opening week or two of the IPL I’m not expecting much in this Chennai track for the bowlers so the sixes should continue to flow here. He can score solidly with the bat and provide a platform for the big hitters to attack from and he’s a dynamite fielder as well as an occasional bowler so a performance line of 28 is well within his reach. Naturally Chennai will probably come on for the run but they struggled with the bat against Delhi and this Sunrisers attack won’t be an easy one to score off. At the prices I’ll chance the Sunrisers. I expect the Knight Riders to win the match but the best bet could well be for there to be over 13.5 sixes. Eden Gardens saw 18 sixes in the opening match here even though it wasn’t the highest scoring game we’ll see in this tournament and with Bangalore bringing the firepower they are bringing with them it is hard to see there being many less than that. Home advantage can often be a big thing in the IPL especially early on in the tournament so at odds against Delhi are worth going with here. Even when they looked beaten against the Delhi Daredevils in their last match they found a way to win and that is always the hallmark of a good side. Mumbai don’t look a settled side to me and they need a major overhaul soon if they are to sustain a competitiveness. Re: Indian Premier League 2015 Wednesday preview: 2pts N.Coulter-Nile Top Delhi Bowler 7/2 Unibet Delhi are going to get a win sooner or later and quotes of 2/1 will look big on them when they do but I’m not completely convinced it will come here as conditions may not suit spin as much as other places. With that in mind though I think it could be worth taking one of their seamers over the spinners in the Delhi top bowler market. Both Sehwag and Saha attack the new ball so if Nathan Coulter Nile can get the ball to nip away they could be walking wickets. NCN will bowl at the end of the innings as well and at 7/2 he could be the value alternative to the spin duo. Full credit has to go to Rajasthan for winning their opening three matches but I don’t think they’ve played a good side yet and there have been times where teams were on top of them. Take away Brendon McCullum’s blitz for Chennai against the Sunrisers and they have been as dominant as any side so far so they could be the value in this one. I think both sides are evenly matched but the difference between the two could be Dave Warner. He used to play for Delhi so he’ll be out to get one over his former side and he looks in great form. He opened the tournament with two half centuries and he appeared to be on his way to a third against Rajasthan before he was bizarrely ran out but given the form he’s in I fancy him to make his way to 24 and beyond here. RR are in form and batting well as they made a mockery chasing down CSK's 156, KXIP always go hard with the bat too.

Usually they rely heavily on Lasith Malinga for four tight overs but he’s been taken for at least 34 in their last four matches so they are needing to score a lot of runs with the bat to compensate for that. No side can keep on doing that and Delhi have a perfectly competitive bowling attack with their plethora of spin options. I have to say I’m not convinced by Mumbai still so I like Delhi here. They played a bit of a shambles of a super over but up until then they were going really well in the tournament.
