The big events keep on coming. This time it is the first staging of the World Grand Prix which sees the top 32 ranked players since the World Championship battling it out for the £100k first prize. ITV4 carry all the action this week and with all the big names involved it should be a cracking week. Re: World Grand Prix - 16-22 Mar Tournament preview: 1pt ew S.Murphy to win World Grand Prix 12/1 Betway (1/2 1-2) Shaun Murphy has been in excellent form for a while but particularly since the turn of the year. He strolled to the Masters title in January and looked in control of the final of the German Masters a couple of weeks later before losing a commanding position to Mark Selby in the end but a semi-final run in the last European Tour event confirms he can perform over this format and with a fairly smooth draw compared to some others he looks the pick of the field this week. Re: World Grand Prix - 16-22 Mar Monday afternoon TV previews: 3pts M.Selby (-2.5 frames) to beat M.Holt 11/10 Bet365 I think we’ll see a strong performance from Mark Selby this week. His world title defence isn’t far away from starting so he will make sure his game peaks for that. Michael Holt is a competent player these days but it is rare he brings his best to the big stage and even more rare he does it against the very best players so I’m expecting Selby to have a bit too much here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/selby-vs-holt-betting-world-champion-can-be-too-good-for-holt-in-llandudno 3pts X.Guodong to beat S.Maguire 13/8 Betfred Although we shouldn’t take too much out of the Shootout in terms of form and things, often players who do well in it come out of it and continue to go well for a few weeks. We saw Barry Hawkins start winning tournaments after he won that event and Michael White has just followed up in the same vein so Guodong could be dangerous here. Maguire didn’t go to India which should help him but Xiao could just be a bit of value here. Re: World Grand Prix - 16-22 Mar Monday evening TV previews: 4pts N.Robertson vs L.Brecel - Over 5.5 frames 8/11 Bet365 I think this will be a much closer game than it would have been had the two met a couple of months ago. Robertson is playing well but Brecel has the confidence of that Welsh Open run under his belt. He looked really good from distance in that tournament and if he gets in here he can bag at least a couple of frames if not the whole lot. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/robertson-vs-brecel-betting-evening-opener-can-be-closer-than-expected 3pts R.O'Sullivan to beat R.Lawler 4-1 9/4 Ladbrokes Although there is the potential for Lawler to frustrate O’Sullivan here I expect O’Sullivan to win but I imagine this will be a largely scrappy match which may well favour Lawler for periods and in those periods I think he can bag a frame before the extra quality of the Rocket takes over. I think Ronnie will win but Lawler should be competitive for long enough to bag a frame. Re: World Grand Prix - 16-22 Mar Tuesday TV previews: 4pts S.Murphy vs P.Ebdon - Over 5.5 frames 8/11 Ladbrokes This one might be a little bit closer than the odds suggest. I still think Murphy will win but it is rare we see Ebdon demolished. Murphy might have a slight advantage in that he was nowhere near India last week but Ebdon wasn’t there too deep so I don’t think it will affect him too much so two solid players can play out a fairly close one to start the day. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/murphy-vs-ebdon-betting-two-world-champions-can-play-a-tight-match-in-wales 4pts R.Walden to beat D.Junhui 13/10 Boylesports Unless Ding’s form has suddenly improved immeasurably, and a first round defeat to Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in India last week suggests it hasn’t, then Walden looks a good price for this match. He will have to fight a bit of jet lag but at least Ding was out in India too but if Ding’s recent form is anything to go by Walden will get the chances he needs to win this match if he is fresh enough. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/walden-vs-ding-betting-ricky-walden-can-take-advantage-of-misfiring-ding 3pts J.Higgins (-1.5 frames) to beat G.Dott 6/5 Spreadex Both men were in India last week but Higgins has been working on TV on the opening day of the event and looks fresh enough so I don’t see jet lag being too much of an issue. Matches between these two in the past have tended to be quite close and I’m expecting that to be the case here but Higgins has found the winning formula again and I expect him to be just a little too good. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/higgins-vs-dott-betting-john-higgins-can-keep-with-winning-ways-in-wales 3pts J.Trump vs D.Dale - Over 0.5 centuries 10/11 Bet365 Looking through the previous matches between these two you see a number of one sided Trump wins and I think this will another one. He is back to playing naughty snooker and going for his shots again and there aren’t many matches where he doesn’t make a century these days, or at least threaten one. Dale can score nicely too when the chances come along so the 10/11 on there being a ton in this one appeals. Re: World Grand Prix - 16-22 Mar Friday QF previews: 4pts M.Davis to beat S.Bingham 7/5 BetVictor On what we’ve seen this week Mark Davis looks good value here. He isn’t always the most reliable on the big stage but he’s been in the one table formats a lot more over the last couple of years so he should be acclimatised to it by now. He looks to be scoring really well but we saw against Robertson that he is more than competent in the scrappy frames. Bingham hasn’t quite been at full pelt this week so I’ll go with Davis here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/davis-vs-bingham-betting-mark-davis-looks-good-value-to-see-off-bingham 4pts M.Gould to beat P.Ebdon 9/10 Boylesports I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Martin Gould this week. Had he not faced a couple of astute tactical players then I might have given the edge to Ebdon here but he has so he’ll be ready for what Ebdon throws at him. Gould has won their last three meetings over this seven frame distance and I fancy him to come through this one too. Ebdon has done well enough this week but he lacks fluency and Gould can take advantage of that. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/gould-vs-ebdon-betting-martin-gould-looks-a-good-thing-against-former-world-champion 4pts G.Dott vs R.O'Sullivan - Over 5.5 frames 5/6 Ladbrokes I think for the first time in this tournament O’Sullivan will be properly tested. Lawler gave him a battle but deep down you always had the feeling when push came to shove he’d be found wanting but that isn’t the case with Dott. Dott loves nothing more than getting his teeth into a match and like a dog he can be hard to shake off. He’s playing well enough to lay it down to the Rocket here so I like over 5.5 frames in this one. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/dott-vs-o-sullivan-betting-former-world-champions-can-be-involved-in-tight-battle 4pts J.Trump vs M.Williams - Over 0.5 centuries 10/11 Bet365 This has the potential to be the pick of the quarter finals and I think they will both bring the best out of each other. The two men met in India last week and both hit a century on the way to Williams winning a deciding frame and I fancy one of them to deliver another here. Both men have scored well this week and in the one table environment I think we’ll see the best of both so the 10/11 on a century here looks perfectly acceptable to me. Re: World Grand Prix - 16-22 Mar SF previews: 4pts M.Gould vs J.Trump - Over 9.5 frames 6/4 Paddy Power I think this will be a good semi-final between two men who love to get the balls open and clear up. They met in a one sided match in the German Masters last month. Trump was in excellent nick that week and made a 147 in the round after he beat Gould but Gould was ill around then. He looks back to his best this week so I fancy this one to go quite deep before it is decided. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/gould-vs-trump-betting-aggressive-potters-can-play-out-close-semi-final 4pts S.Bingham (+2.5 frames) to beat R.O'Sullivan 19/20 Coral From what we’ve seen of O’Sullivan in this tournament he looks there for the taking. He may improve over the longer distance but he’ll certainly need to. Bingham has already beaten O’Sullivan on the big stage at the UK Championship and he should have beaten him at that tournament earlier this season too so we know he has it in him to challenge the Rocket in the big events. Whether he holds his nerve to get over the line remains to be seen but I’m confident Bingham will win four frames if not all six. Re: World Grand Prix - 16-22 Mar Final preview: 3pts J.Trump to beat R.O'Sullivan 7/4 Spreadex O’Sullivan won both their previous finals this season but I get the feeling he was playing much better then than he is now and even then he only won the latest of their two finals in a deciding frame. We’re sure to see a high quality final and one with a stack of big breaks but with Trump’s safety game much improved and his battling qualities there for all to see this week this may be the time he finally grounds the Rocket to win a major title.
