At home they go at their opposition but away from home they look to play on the break and matches are often a lot tighter. All of that leaves me thinking that Lisbon might be worth taking on what is a slightly larger Asian line than they probably should be. Sure, Chelsea might just win it mainly because Sporting Lisbon has 2 awful centre-backs, their best hope is that Rui Patricio delivers the exhibition of a lifetime (and actually he is in good form), but Mourinho's sides CL group phase form was never something to respect. Their teams usually have trouble in qualifying for the 1/8s, take for example last year. I think we will see a very strong Chelsea tomorrow due to the result of 1st matchday and will most probably win with the possible inclusion of Diego Costa, but they could also be struggling at some moment or another. I do think Sporting will step up with a positive attitude and perform well on this game, lots of young and talented portuguese players trying to prove themselves on the big stage against Mourinho (Adrien Silva, William Carvalho, Cedric, João Mário) and Nani and Carrillo, on a good day, can create amok on any defensive line. Set pieces could also be a way of scoring, and I do think they will be able once at least tomorrow. However, they are not that good in defense, and only Diego Costa might be enough to destroy both Sporting center-backs. Therefore, BTTS & Chelsea are @ 3.9 on Betfair Sportsbook. You can also get 4.2 on Bwin but I don't really like that bookie.

Re: Sporting CP v Chelsea > Tuesday September 30th Drogba is out for two weeks now so Costa will start this one, although Mourinho said only a couple of weeks ago that Costa isn't able to play 90 minutes twice in a week at the moment. As we saw with Athletico at the end of last season Costa's effectiveness diminishes quite a bit when he is lacking fitness. With Arsenal at the weekend too you'd think Mourinho would be hoping this game is done pretty quickly so he can preserve Costa for the weekend. With that in mind I like Chelsea to be winning at H/T for 2.37 (Betfair).

Re: Sporting CP v Chelsea > Tuesday September 30th My only slight concern for Chelsea is Mourinho's apparent focus this season on the league title. If he decides to rest players for a more important next fixture (v Arsenal), then they might not get the win tonight. But Mourinho is well known for mind games and I'm not convinced he can sacrifice another tilt at the CL to go all out for the league. He'll be bitterly disappointed to have thrown away 2 points in the first match, and to have anything less than 4 points from the first 2 games would be a failure for Chelsea in what is an easy group, lets be honest. Sporting Lisbon have to be respected like all sides playing at home, but I've seen enough of them in recent seasons to know they are not Champions League standard. They're Europa League level and will do well to win any more than 1 game in this group. It won't be tonight. If Chelsea drift out to Evens, I'll be backing the win. But for now, I'll be laying Sporting (at 4.3/1) and backing Chelsea DNB (at 1.33) betfair prices

Re: Sporting CP v Chelsea > Tuesday September 30th Chelsea look unstopable in PL but they were not quite convincing against Schalke. CL is a different playground for PL clubs as the last round showed. All 4 PL clubs struggled badly and it's not just the results that tell. Their performances were pretty poor as well. Costa has been key to Chelsea's early successes but his fitness remains a serious concern. If he's not fully fit, I can't quite see how Chelsea will earn 3 points in Lisbon. His backups are simply not going to make it. Drogba is out but it's probably good news for Chelsea because the Ivorian is now a pale shadow of his great former self. Mou is certainly keen on taking all 3 points but he needs Costa to deliver tonight. Sporting might not be a worldbeater right now but they are to be respected on their home soil. Portuguese teams are usually solid and hard to beat, especially when they play at home. Eventhough I believe Chelsea is a stronger team but I'm not quite sure they are good enough to beat Sporting tonight. It's difficult to call pre-match so I'll wait for the in-play. If Costa starts (and looks lively enough), I'll have a punt on Chelsea at a better price. Otherwise I'll skip this one.
