Re: County Championship 2014 Another annoying week with rain denying me two good chances of wins :(. Forecast for the whole country this week is rotten.com so I'll save my cash for the T20 at the end of the week. Good luck to those who take anything this week :ok

Re: County Championship 2014 One for me to begin this week. 4pts Essex to beat Worcestershire 11/10 Winner Sports I can't help but feel Worcestershire have overachieved at the start of this season. They have picked up wins over Kent and Derbyshire but both were very strangely subdued in those matches and I'd like to see them win a good quality match before I'm taken by them. They will be without Moeen Ali this week as he is with England for their T20 match against Sri Lanka and Ali is a big miss with the bat and the ball. That leaves a lot of pressure on Daryl Mitchell with the bat and if Saeed Ajmal doesn't have the desired effect Worcestershire could be chasing plenty. Essex haven't got the results Worcestershire have this season but they've dominated most of their matches and although Ali Cook and Ravi Bopara depart now they have more than enough batsmen in good nick to cope. With Graham Napier back with the ball and Oliver Newby already impressing and Jesse Ryder now in place Essex look much the stronger all round side to me in this one.

Re: County Championship 2014 Unlike in the T20 I've not been able to get anything going in this yet. Hopefully I can change that this week. 4pts Surrey to beat Essex 10/11 Stan James I've not been a huge Surrey fan this season and some would question why I am now with Graeme Smith away injured but they've doubled their quality with Amla replacing him. In an ideal world there would be a more experienced player than Gary Wilson captaining the side but at least he's been there a while and got Surrey in his heart now. Zafir Ansari is back to strengthen the batting while Stuart Meaker and Chris Tremlett are in the squad with the ball which makes Surrey look a lot stronger than they have looked. Essex are very weak with the ball at the minute unless Monty does something special. They are without their entire seam attack with Napier, Masters, Mills and Topley all out injured and Oliver Newby got injured last week and has gone back to Lancashire. Essex are so depleted in that area that they've had to go and sign a local league player and get him into the squad for this one whereas Matt Salisbury only made his debut last week and Sikandar not long before that. They will find it daunting bowling at Amla, Davies, Wilson and co so I like Surrey this week.

Re: County Championship 2014 Four for me on Sunday. 4pts Somerset to beat Lancashire 4/5 Ladbrokes Somerset look good things to me this week even though they are on the road. Lancashire are struggling for runs at the minute and they have made drastic changes to their batting line up for this match with Luis Reece paying the price for a poor start to the season. That isn't the sign of a club who are going well. Even in the T20 they've been struggling for big totals in the last week or so and with Jimmy Anderson with England and Junaid Khan not registered for four day cricket Lancashire look a touch light to me. Somerset have no such problems. The return to fitness of Craig Maschede makes them stronger with the ball and there's arguably no side stronger with the bat at the minute especially with Trescothick in good touch again. Somerset are going along nicely at the minute and can claim another win at Old Trafford this week. 4pts Nottinghamshire to beat Sussex 11/10 Ladbrokes Nottinghamshire are a little big for me here. This match is a case of the haves vs the have nots in that Nottinghamshire have Stuart Broad in their squad while Chris Jordan is missing for Sussex. Matt Prior plays for Sussex but all eyes will be on him so he's under a lot of pressure to deliver and deliver against a top notch Nottinghamshire attack with Broad, Siddle, Adams and either Carter, Fletcher or Shahzad steaming in at them. We know we've no need to worry about Nottinghamshire's batting as they have plenty of quality and depth to that. If Michael Yardy isn't passed fit after a bicep injury then Sussex will look a little light with the bat, especially if Prior is a little rusty after time on the sidelines so everything points to me to take Nottinghamshire at odds against. 5pts Glamorgan to beat Essex 6/5 Ladbrokes Glamorgan go into this match back at full strength with Graham Wagg and Michael Hogan fit again and with the likes of Jim Allenby, Will Bragg and Jacques Rudolph all in the runs I see no reason why the Welsh side won't go well here. Essex are struggling a little bit at the moment. They've hardly got enough men to make up a bowling attack even though Reece Topley is fit again and with the bat they haven't passed 306 since the opening week of the season and even that innings needed 181 from Alastair Cook who isn't around here. In their last three matches they've been bowled out for less than 230 on all three occasions so while they have no bowlers they're struggling even more with the bat which isn't ideal. Glamorgan are batting nicely and they've already shown this season they can skittle the supposed better sides in this division so they look the bet of the week to me here. 4pts Worcestershire to beat Surrey Evs Ladbrokes Absolutely no idea where this price comes from but I'm not complaining. We all know there's no Graeme Smith for Surrey now and Hashim Amla had a prior arrangement before this game so he is unavailable too. Kevin Pietersen is still injured so Surrey look light in the batting department even allowing for the fact that Vikram Solanki is in the squad for the first time this season. It isn't just with the bat Surrey are struggling for personnel. Stuart Meaker, Tom Curran and Tim Linley all miss out with the ball so the likes of Jade Dernbach and Chris Tremlett will come into the side. Worcestershire have Moeen Ali available here which is huge and they should be full of confidence after a couple of excellent T20 wins recently as well as slaughtering Essex in the Championship. Saeed Ajmal has been too good for batting lineups all season so far and so if Mitchell, Ali and one or two others can score, which they should on a good Oval wicket then the likes of Ajmal and Shantry can do the rest.

Re: County Championship 2014 Potentially four winners ruined by the weather last week :wall. 3 for this week to begin with. 4pts Somerset to beat Sussex 4/5 Paddy Power Somerset have started the season quite well and there is no need to desert them just yet. Sussex go into this match missing three pretty key men in the England duo of Matt Prior and Chris Jordan as well as the injured Michael Yardy so their batting depth and resources will be tested here. Somerset are close to full strength for this game and have plenty of batsmen in good form and lots of bowling options to break through a potentially weaker Sussex batting line up. If Joyce doesn't deliver here Sussex could be rolled over once if not twice so even at 4/5 there's mileage in the home side in this one. 5pts Hampshire to beat Worcestershire 10/11 Ladbrokes I like Hampshire this week. I've a feeling they might have been clever too. Initially I thought it was a bonkers move to drop their top wicket taker this season but actually Glenn Maxwell, who comes in for Abbott, is such a good player of spin that he could completely put Saeed Ajmal out of his rhythm and in doing so would lessen much of the threat that Worcestershire pose. Their batting threat is severely reduced this week anyway so if Hampshire can just keep Daryl Mitchell quiet them they should keep Worcestershire to a relatively low total. Hampshire's batting is full of runs and with plenty of spin options in good form and still a perfectly dangerous new ball pairing even without Kyle Abbott in Jimmy Tomlinson and Matt Coles I think the leaders look a good bet to extend their lead at the top here. 5pts Derbyshire to beat Leicestershire 10/11 Skybet This is a battle between two sides who have clearly forgotten how to win cricket matches so in theory the better side individually should come out on top and for me that is Derbyshire, especially as Leicestershire are a little light on bowling resources this week with Nathan Buck and Ollie Freckingham ruled out through injury and doubts over Charlie Shreck's back too. Leicestershire as a batting group haven't been buzzing in recent games either. Derbyshire are a bit of a mysterious side this season. They've actually been in good positions in most of their matches but have either let them slip or the weather has denied them the chance to enhance those positions. They will be hoping the weather stays away this week and if it does then in the likes of Moore, Madsen and North with the bat and Palladino, Groenewald and Footitt with the ball they have more than enough men to make this a week of struggle for Leicestershire.

Re: County Championship 2014 Much better week last week. Not much I fancy this week but hopefully this one can tick things over. 4pts Durham to beat Lancashire 8/11 BetVictor Durham have been unlucky in their recent matches. They've been on top but the weather has denied them. That has been against the better sides in the division too. Lancashire haven't started too well and have had all the off field issues with Peter Moores going to England and haven't yet found the right batting combination. They've brought Usman Khawaja in for the rest of the season but he may take a game or two to get up to speed which isn't ideal and I'm not sure Lancashire's attack is as strong as they would like. Durham's attack certainly is. With Ben Stokes and Jon Hastings firmly in situ now they have a strong attack even without Graham Onions and both men score good runs to lengthen the batting line up so it isn't hard to see why Durham are improving. If the weather can stay kind to them I don't think a Durham win is too far away and it should come this week.

Re: County Championship 2014 Two for Sunday. 4pts Durham to beat Sussex 10/11 BetVictor I like Durham here. They go into this one off the back of a good win over Lancashire last week and that win should spur them on to greater things. Ben Stokes has a point to prove so he is very much going to be a key man for Durham but they have enough all round cricketers to dig them out of holes with bat and ball and that is never a bad thing. Sussex are going through a spell of lot of injuries which with Chris Jordan and Matt Prior away with England isn't ideal. Ed Joyce is in the squad for this match but he missed Friday night's T20 with an injury and isn't certain to line up but even if he does the Sussex batting looks a little light without Yardy and Prior. Unless Steve Magoffin has a worldy game with the ball Sussex don't have a massive amount to offer with that either and Durham bat a long way down as we saw last week. The home side with all their batting and bowling options should be too strong for a depleted Sussex side here. 4pts Warwickshire to beat Yorkshire Evs BetVictor Warwickshire have suffered for a bit of consistency this season but they are going in the right direction I think and with Chris Woakes released by England in time to play in this game they have something resembling their strongest attack out for the first time in a while. Although Jonathan Trott played a couple of T20 matches in the week he isn't yet ready for four day cricket which isn't ideal but Warwickshire still have a competent batting line up without them. Yorkshire have decided to rest Tim Bresnan and Azeem Rafiq this week. It is a surprised the latter is rested because Adil Rashid's wife is expecting a child and he will leave the game should she go into labour so Yorkshire could end up playing this match with 10 men. With Kane Williamson out of the picture now Yorkshire would rely on Aaron Finch for some spin which isn't ideal. Root and Ballance are away with England so they are straining everything they can get out of the rest of their batting line up and it is a line up which looks stronger with Bresnan in it just in case the new ball does some damage up top. I really like this Warwickshire attack though and I think they can force another win for the Bears in this one.

Re: County Championship 2014 One for Sunday. 5pts Nottinghamshire to beat Warwickshire Evs Ladbrokes Nottinghamshire were my idea of the champions before a ball was bowled this season and I've not changed my mind on that. They have slipped into a really nice groove in recent times with the likes of Andre Adams and Harry Gurney back to full speed in the side and Peter Siddle really contributing as he was expected to. Perhaps the biggest thing for Nottinghamshire has been the form of their batting line up, led by the ever impressive Samit Patel. Warwickshire have a top notch bowling attack but they don't always deliver in both innings and their batting has often had a poor innings in a match too which isn't an ideal combination. Nottinghamshire have a really balanced squad now with options and cover for every sort of wicket they will encounter and with the confidence of a few wins behind them I think they are a great bet at even money this week.

Re: County Championship 2014 One for me this week. 4pts Somerset to beat Middlesex Evs Paddy Power Middlesex have only won one match in the Championship since the T20 started almost two months ago so their pathetic form in that competition seems to be hampering them in the longer format of the game and not beating Northants last week will have been a massive disappointment as well. Contrast that to Somerset and they've been going well recently and although they haven't won every match they have dominated a good number of them and been on top. They go into the match off the back of a confidence boosting win in the T20 on Sunday and with Groenewald now up to speed he will only add to the strength of their bowling attack. With a more than solid batting line up and plenty of momentum behind them I'll take Somerset to come out on top in this one especially with Middlesex just showing signs of falling away like they did at this time last season.

Re: County Championship 2014 One for Sunday. 4pts Durham to beat Warwickshire Evs Bet365 Durham have been slowly warming to the task in the last few weeks and they have a good opportunity to get a win which would put them right in the title picture here. They will be without Ben Stokes for this game but they have shown they have a decent enough batting line up in his absence and the appearance of Graham Onions in the squad should give everyone a lift and if he is selected here it gives Durham a hell of a pace attack to go in with here with Rushworth and Wood also fit. Warwickshire have a decent attack of their own but they have been very hit and miss with the bat all season and although they have a full batting line up available to them apart from Ian Bell, the Riverside isn't the place to be going if you've been a bit fragile in that area. Durham are on the up and Onions only strengthens them further so they are a clear bet to me this week.

Re: County Championship 2014 One for me this week. 4pts Derbyshire to beat Glamorgan 11/10 Bet365 Derbyshire went into the campaign with hopes of promotion and many observers expected them to get that promotion but that hasn't materialised as they have had issues off the field and some weirdly timed retirements not helping them but they look to have turned a corner recently and I think they are worth backing here. Early in the season their batting was letting them down quite badly but in recent weeks that batting has improved and that bodes well for them because they've always had a bowling attack to bowl sides out. Glamorgan have a massive match in the T20 Blast at the end of the week and while they've picked their strongest squad here it would be no surprise if they have half an eye on that. They've not won in the Championship in their last three matches so are stuttering in this format so that coupled with Derbyshire's improvement makes the home side a good bet here.

Re: County Championship 2014 TV preview: 4pts Yorkshire to beat Nottinghamshire 8/11 William Hill Nottinghamshire have put up a brilliant fight this season but injuries to their bowlers have come along at the wrong time and I sense this is the week Yorkshire will win the title. Having Root and Ballance back is a big boost to their batting line up and their bowling attack looks much the stronger of the two which could be crucial at Trent Bridge. Although the weather is set fair I’ll still take Yorkshire without the draw. Re: County Championship 2014 Couple for me this week. 5pts Sussex to beat Nottinghamshire 5/4 Sportingbet Now that their title hopes are over Nottinghamshire are taking this opportunity to blood a few youngsters and in all honesty they've looked like a beaten side for a while. They were poor in all three departments last week and they've had a long season having competed strongly in both the one day competitions too. Sussex are the opposite. They've had a lot of injuries this season but those players are coming back and are fresh and they bombed out early in both the one day tournaments so they haven't had the extra overs in their legs that a lot of sides have had. Sussex will be motivated to finish as high up the league as is possible and they take a much stronger looking bowling attack to Nottingham to the one they will be facing. If it spins Sussex have it covered but if it seams and swings they come into their own so I'll take the visitors in this one. 4pts Hampshire to beat Kent x Essex to beat Leicestershire 11/10 Stan James This double looks pretty obvious and while I'm not usually one for doubles I can't ignore this one at odds against. Both sides have been very good in recent times. For some reason Essex always finish well while Hampshire will secure promotion with a win here. Leicestershire gave up on their season a good while back and are starting to lose players for next season left right and centre which can't be good for dressing room motivation and morale. Kent have lost Bollinger and aren't playing for anything either so with Hampshire having plenty of motivation this week and Essex in much better nick than Leicestershire I'll take this double to land here.

Re: County Championship 2014 Tuesday TV preview: 4pts Middlesex to beat Lancashire 10/11 Ladbrokes This is one of those matches which is tricky to bet on given that Middlesex’s target is six points as much as it is winning the match but the best way to get six points is to win the match and I expect them to do that. Their batting line up is much the stronger of the two overall and you’d probably give them the edge in the bowling department too so even though they don’t have to win Middlesex can still seal their safety with a win.
