Defence isn't the best but do have some quality players on the roster. Silly price imo

I couldnt possibly touch the panthers myself, lost 60% of their starting offensive line and while their receivers werent great last year the only pass catcher that returns for them this year is Greg Olsen - add in that Greg Hardy is going to get suspended and he and Kuechly were the heartbeat of a defense that has also lost both starting safeties from last year they are a massive lay for me

If Minnesota, Detroit and Chicago cannot step up and win the division this year it is very difficult to see them wrestling the division crown away with a full season of Rodgers (who also lost many of his weapons for portions of last year too) As for the South division, New Orleans lost it by the skin of their teeth last year to a Panthers team who are openly rebuilding their roster and the identity of their franchise, they look to be regressing towards a down year, the Falcons will be improved on last season but Atlanta will struggle to replace Tony Gonzalez on offense even if they do get full and healthy seasons from Julio Jones and Roddy White, their defensive unit is an area of weakness as the franchise struggles to cope with a roster that lacks top end young talent as a knock on effect from trading up to draft Julio Jones a few years ago. Tampa Bay have changed head coach and gone to Lovie Smith which is a good move as he is absolutely an upgrade over Greg Schiano, they look to have a solid WR group with adding rookie Mike Evans from Texas A&M opposite Vincent Jackson, there are questions at RB as Doug Martin needs to bounce back after injury and they lack a QB. Josh McCown was outstanding in Chicago filling in for Jay Cutler last season but you have to take into account that the Pass attempts/interception ratio is unsustainable (unless McCown is actually the greatest QB to have ever played the game and the fact he was on a league minimum salary in Chicago last year as a veteran player would suggest it is unlikely the entire NFL got it that wrong) so there will be some definite regression in his performance and Lovie Smith is not the offensive guru that Marc Trestman is in Chicago. New Orleans are a team that look to be in "win now" mode, they have retained TE Jimmy Graham with the franchise tag and strengthened a massive area of weakness by signing free agent safety Jairus Byrd from Buffalo who is one of the best at his position in the league, it looks to me that they wont be able to sign Jimmy Graham long term due to that contract so are all in on this year as Drew Brees also gets older, the defense has a pass rush and the back end is strengthened, on offense they have lost Darren Sproles to Philly but his role was largely filled by Pierre Thomas last season and they operate a running back by committee in any case and with Marques Colston, Jimmy Graham and highly touted rookie Brandin Cooks, I cannot see any weaknesses on the roster and they are my pick for the NFC South at what is a massive price

Only Sankey has any real appeal of the RB but the word on him out of college is he's more of a timeshare guy and that's not going to cut it. Watkins the standout talent but Manuel is anything but. Not convinced by him and whilst Evans has appeal Cooks has the ideal scenario. He has Brees to throw him the ball and with Graham around he's not going to face any double teams. Add to that the departure of Moore and Sproles and the fact Cooks may be used in the run game as well and I can see him getting at least 4-5 touches per game. In a field without a standout QB or a standout talent in a good situation I think Cooks is in a great position to take this.

Denver could be there or thereabouts as their division shouldn't be that difficult to get out of - I think the Chiefs did what they did last year because of a nice schedule. However, I don't rate them as much as others seem to. Their schedule last year was very, very favourable and, aside from their play-off victory over the Pats, they beat none of the main contenders. Therefore, I see no value in their price despite their off-season recruits. No QB won this award before 2004, but since then 6 have done it and 3 of the last 4 years a QB has won it. The only other QB worth considering is Manziel, but it's impossible to know what he will deliver at NFL level. I don't see any WR winning this, Watkins will have Manuel throwing at him, Evans, Lee and Cooks will have other players above them and I don't think they will play enough snaps. Maybe Sankey, who also has interesting odds, but I think there's a huge value on Bridgewater and odds will drop before season begins.

Not only is Lance Moore gone but so is Sproles. Between them they had 144 targets last year. Obviously a fair number of Sproles' dump offs will go to the Saints RB, but the Saints also designed a lot of screens for Sproles. Those plays that were designed to get Sproles into open space are much more likely to go to Cooks. Stills got 641 yards last year as a rookie and he's a 5th round pedigree. With Moore gone Stills is the only player ahead of Cooks on the depth chart and whilst he likely won't start I can't see it taking too long for Cooks to get usurp him. This is for 2 receiver sets too, I'm sure we will see Cooks in the slot a lot, where Jimmy Graham over the middle will likely take away the defensive focus, leaving more room for Cooks, who has 4.31 speed. He will also return punts -- a couple of big returns for a touchdown will go a long way to winning OROY as it did for Harvin. Situationally there is nobody who has it anywhere near as good as Cooks. Manziel, even if he starts, has no help in Cleveland. Bridgewater has to beat out Cassell, and even if he does it's an AP first offence. Watkins has Manuel throwing to, Buccs have an atrocious O-line and VJax will still dominate targets and more importantly I'm not convinced McCown is anything other than a product of Trestman's system. Shonn Greene is likely to stay in the way of Sankey and featured RBs are rare these days, let alone feature rookie RBs. An injury to Gore would put Hyde right in the mix but for me Cooks should be favourite. I also think the standard to win this year will be a lot less. RG3 had 3200 yards passing and 700 rushing and had perfect passer rating in a game. Cam broke rookie passing record, Matt Ryan had 3400 yards passing and took his team to the play offs whilst Bradford had over 3500 yards. Unless you break a lot of rookie records too, then you'll find most recent OROYs went to the play-offs. This is another area where I think Cooks has a leg up, as virtually every other player in the Top 7-8 in the betting play for teams that I don't see making the play offs. Production I feel is rated more highly if it leads your team to the post-season. Dan - great write up and previews so far mate. Keep up the good work.

MVP Drew Brees 8/1 (BWIN) Payton Manning was something else last year and obviously deserved the MVP award, I believe he will have another good year but cant see him having another year like the last. I personally believe the Saints are a very good bet this year to take it all now that Sean Payton has got a full season back under his belt after his suspension and i believe this title challenge will be driven by Drew Brees who you have to go back to 2009 before you find a season where he wasn't in the top 3 passing yards (2 of them years he was top). Also last season Drew threw for a record 300+ yards in 9 consecutive games Most Passing Yards Drew Brees 13/5 (PaddyPower) Same reasons as above really, I believe the Saints will dominate the NFC South this season with the Bucs still building, the Panthers depend too much on Newton and with him coming off knee surgery and having basically nobody to throw to, and the Falcons are coming off a very poor season, and even though they brought in a few decent additions i still dont think they will be the team they were 2 years ago Matthew Stafford 8/1 (Coral, William Hill) A similar reason i like Stafford is that he has not been out of the top 3 for most passing yards in the last 3 seasons, and can see this continuing especially seeing that they have brought in Golden Tate to line up opposite Megatron who at times were treble teamed last season and still managed to bring in the catching Most Rushing Yards LeSean McCoy 4/1 (SkyBet, Coral, William Hill) Shady McCoy blossomed in Chip Kellys offense last season and i think this will continue to happen especially seeing that DeSawn Jackson has moved onto pastures new Most Receiving Yard Antonio Brown 20/1 (888) Brown last season became Big Ben's go to guy and was 2nd in last seasons most receiving yards behind Josh Gordon and so far this preseason is ranked 5th in receiving yards even though he has barely played that much. Also the Steelers 2nd threat from last season Emmanual Sanders has moved to the Broncos Most Sacks JJ Watt 10/1 (BetVictor) 2 seasons ago Watt went into beast mode racking up 20.5 sacks, last season teams doubled up on him making it harder for him. Now that the Texans have drafted Clowney to line up opposite him this should give him more one on one chances and should hopefully be back to his dominating self Offensive Rookie Brandin Cooks 10/1 (Ladbrokes) Statistically rookie WRs dont have great rookie year but the reports coming out of the Saints camp are amazing and when you have Drew Brees throwing you the ball then you have a good chance of being the top rookie Blake Bortles 20/1 (Bet365) QBs always have the best chance to be voted the best player so when i was looking at this years rookie QBs nobody really stood out at me but looking into it more and having watched some preseason games Blake Bortles is starting to stand out above the rest with some of his plays. I am not convinced about Manziel and Bridgewater even being starters week 1 so this gives Bortles the best chance. Sanders replaces Decker with Ball set to take on lead back role. D-Ware a HUGE addition along that D-line should be a fearsome front 7, still some question marks over the secondary which hopefully can be masked by the pass rush. Drew Brees has a new toy to play with in Brandin Cooks, who will take over from Darren Sproles as the change of pace out wide and maybe in the backfield. Ingram been running hard in pre-season maybe he can live up to his Alabama days. Rob Ryan has worked wonders with this defence and with Vaccaro back from injury they will go well. NCAA FOOTBALL HEISMANN TROPHY DUKE JOHNSON (30/1 B365) Just gonna throw this in here as I can't see a college antepost thread. Decent price for one of the best running backs in College. Stephen Morris graduated along with Allen Hurns (who has started well for the Jags in NFL) and true freshman QB Brad Kayaa will be under centre which hopefully means one thing - a lot of Duke Johnson. They also return 3 starts on the offensive line, including both the C and LG.

Plus when it comes to these types of awards it can also be a bit of a popularity contest and they don’t come much bigger or popoular than Clowney on the defensive side of the ball Comeback Player Rob Gronkowski 10/1 (Paddypower) Over the past 2 seasons Gronkowski has been in and out with injuries but when he has played he has been Bradys number 1 target and IF he can stay healthy I believe he will push Jimmy Graham in regards to most TDs at the TE position Most TDs Jamaal Charles 14/1 (Ladbrokes) Jamaal last year showed that he was Kansas City Chiefs only real danger on offense and this has not changed over the off season so I can see it being a repeat of last season when he racked up 19 TDs Calvin Johnson 20/1 (Ladbrokes) Last season Megatron was not fully fit and would only practice on the Friday before a game and was also treble teamed a number of times and still clocked up 12 TDs. This offseason the Lions added Golden Tate (WR) & Eric Ebron with this year’s 10^th overall draft which means opposing defences will have to also pay attention elsewhere so Calvin will be open more. Plus Stafford could throw up a jump ball to Johnson with the whole defence around him and he would still find a way to come down with it

Unless either Brady or Manning are injured for a decent chunk of time, NE and Denver will be the 1&2 seeds, who takes top spot I'm not sure. For any other AFC team to make the superbowl it's almost certainly going to have to beat both of those sides on their own patch, in consecutive weeks. That's an extremely tall order. The Ravens did it a couple of years back but they were on a serious mission and seemed destined to win it that season. I do quite like San Diego (40/1) for a small bet. I think it helps that they at least know the Broncos inside out. They seem a fairly good all round side, but honestly I have to admit it'll be a tough ask for them to make the SB. Of the rest, Indi will probably win their division but I just don't think they have the defensive strength to go deep. The winner of the AFC North is always going to be be a tough defensive unit, but there are offensive doubts surrounding the Steelers Ravens and Bengals which will probably be their ultimate downfall. Over on the NFC I think it's between the Seahawks, Packers and Saints to make the SB. This is where home field advantage is going to be crucial. If the Saints or Seahawks are no1 seed then I can't see past either of them heading to Arizona. It looks like San Fran might be due for a slight down year and at best only just sneak into the play offs which should give the Seahawks the division fairly easily. But the west is a tough division and it might prevent the reigning champions from being the top seed. If the Saints can get it, they perhaps look a better value pick @ 12/1. Forget the NFC East. The Eagles will probably win it but they are nowhere near good enough to go toe to toe with the elite NFC teams yet. IMO the North is between the Packers and Lions, with obviously the former having a much better chance of going deep. You can never rule out Aaron Rogers but the GB defence needs to step it up. Overall my pick this year is the Saints. They seem like a popular selection and I have to agree with the majority that this could be their season. But they have to get the no1 seed,(or hope Seahawks don't get it) because there's no way they will beat Seattle @ Century link, nobody will.
