The UK Open has a new slot in the calendar, a new venue and a new TV broadcaster. It begins on Friday but it is no longer at the Reebok Stadium. Instead it is at Minehead where the Players Championship Finals have been held for the last couple of years and the whole event is now live on ITV4 for the entire weekend. Always a good tournament with the random draw meaning anyone can play anyone at anytime so it is an event outsiders tend to do well in. Re: UK Open 2014 - 7-9 Mar Tournament preview: 2pts ew G.Anderson to win UK Open 25/1 Coral (1/4 1-4) Leading my ‘team’ of players this week is Scotland’s Gary Anderson. Anderson is a former finalist in this tournament so we know he has what it takes to come through the field and he has already won two tournaments in 2014 which gives him a boost going into this weekend. Anderson has won a European Tour event and a UK Open qualifier and looks to be playing somewhere near his best darts at the minute so at 25/1 if he can dodge the dangerous bullets in the draw early on he could be a massive player come Sunday. 1pt ew S.Bunting to win UK Open 33/1 Skybet (1/4 1-4) As soon as Stephen Bunting switched over to the PDC I had him down on my shortlist for this tournament and he has inked himself onto my team with a win in one of the UK Open qualifiers which was just his second tournament in the PDC. Forget the fact this guy has spent his career in the BDO. He is more than good enough to mix it in this company and with experience aplenty in going through big fields in a weekend over in the BDO he can use that to his advantage and have a deep run in this tournament. 1pt ew J.Pipe to win UK Open 50/1 Boylesports (1/4 1-4) Justin Pipe is near enough playing on home soil in this tournament. He lives not far from the venue and it is clearly one he enjoys and gets good support in because he has made the semi final in each of the two Players Championship finals which have been held here. He has a tricky test against Dave Chisnall in the third round here but if he can come through that not only will he have got rid of a danger in the field but he’ll be into the Last 32 with his confidence high and very comfortable in the surroundings. Pipe has made a European Tour final and three quarter finals and a semi final in floor tournaments in 2014 so he’s in good form going into this weekend. Pipe will breakthrough and make the final of, or even land, a major tournament in 2014 I’m confident of that. Given his comfort with the venue it is worth taking him this weekend in case this is the tournament. Re: UK Open 2014 - 7-9 Mar Outsiders preview: 0.5pts ew T.Jenkins to win UK Open 100/1 Coral (1/4 1-4) Terry Jenkins is the first one on my list. Jenkins might be in the twilight of his career but he can still throw a mean dart and there have been times this year when he has averaged over a ton in the floor events. Dropping down the rankings might be no bad thing for The Bull this weekend as it means he’ll be able to come through unnoticed on the side boards where the pressure isn’t as high as it is on the main stage. Jenkins is a danger to anyone in the game still though. He hit a nine darter earlier in the year and has wins over Kim Huybrechts and Kevin Painter among others. He’s a former quarter finalist in this event and with some luck in the draw he could go better than that this weekend. 0.5pts ew M.Webster to win UK Open 150/1 Boylesports (1/4 1-4) Mark Webster showed his game is still there at the World Championship and this is his first opportunity to show us that he can still perform in the big events since then. Webby made the Last 16 or better in four of the six qualifying events for this tournament which is good consistent form and he only needs a couple of nice draws to go further than that here. In one of those events he beat Stephen Bunting so his game is still there and if his form is similar to how it was in the World Championship then Webster can relaunch his career in a big way this weekend. 0.5pts ew D.Winstanley to win UK Open 150/1 Skybet (1/4 1-4) Dean Winstanley looked like he was going to be another off the BDO conveyor belt to take the PDC by storm but injuries over the last 12-18 months or so have hampered him in that quest but he is back to full health now and making hay again. He has been to a semi final of a tournament this year already and a number of Last 16 finishes too. Winstanley has wins over Wade and Chisnall and you don’t beat either of those if your game is in good nick. He’s got a nice draw in the Last 64 here and with some winning momentum behind him I wouldn’t be surprised if Deano is still around come Sunday. Re: UK Open 2014 - 7-9 Mar Friday afternoon previews: 3pts K.Brown to beat M.Suljovic 11/10 Stan James You can’t get much better form when you are making a name for yourself than beating Phil Taylor and Peter Wright in the same month so Keegan Brown has got to be going into this tournament feeling good about himself. In truth you never know what you’re going to get with Mensur but if Brown plays the game which saw off Taylor he’ll be decent value in this one. King has always been a controversial player and can often let the crowd get to him but there is no doubting his talent. It’s no secret that the death of his father who was an ever present supporter of him; devastated him and clearly had an adverse affect on his darts. It’s been a long wait for King to show signs that he is back to his best. But his recent run to the final of the Dutch Masters shows that he is once again in great form. That was some achievement considering he was clearly suffering from back problems at the time. He has subsequently seen a specialist recommended by Colin Lloyd and says that his back is now feeling better. A fit, fully focused in form King will take some beating and could go very deep into this tournament at a nice price.

Re: UK Open 2014 - 7-9 Mar Ian White to beat Daryl Gurney 2/5StanJames, Boylesport I don’t usually back odds on but 2/5 is a much better price than I would have imagined. White is a very capable player who can mix it with the best. Gurney is capable enough but is a couple of levels below White. The two met recently with White running out the 6-1 victor.Unless White has a shocker I can only see one winner. Aaron Holdstock to beat Kevin McDine 11/2 Coral Bet365 Once upon a time I thought McDine had the talent to break into the top 16. Unfortunately that never came to fruition. Sometimes when you watch him he appears disinterested and seems to lack the commitment to come back from behind. There’s no doubting his ability but in a short format such as this I believe he may be vulnerable. Hull youngster AaronHoldstock is locally making quite a name for himself and is definitely a name for the future. It’s a huge occasion for him but he is undoubtedly talented. At such large odds is surely worth a punt. Mark Hylton to beat Dennis Smith evens Bet365, Paddypower, StanJames, Coral It’s good to see Mark “Mile High” Hylton back in a tv tournament. A few years ago he looked a very capable player who looked like he would be a regular in tv tournaments. Quite how he has fallen so far in such a short time is a bit of a mystery. Fortunately he is facing a very beatable opponent. I would compare watching Smith play to watching proverbial paint dry. It’s not so much much his speed but more the annoying way he addresses the board. I could forgive himif he had the game to go with it but his form looks woeful judging by his performance at World Championships. If Hylton still retains form anything like what he showed a couple of years ago and isn’t bothered by Smith’s slow play he should take this.

Re: UK Open 2014 - 7-9 Mar 4 Pts John Bowles to beat Dirk van Duijvenbolde, Evs, Coral: I don't know what Bowled has done to warrant being outsider here, albeit marginal. The man got to the Quaters of this competition in 2011, a feat that remains a joint record for a "pub qualifier". He's also beat Jamie Caven at the World Champs, and pushed Gary Anderson all the way, missing match two match darts in the process. Of what I've seen of Dirk, he's very rat-tat-tat and inconsistent in a van der Voort sort of way, so Bowles is the value here for me.

Re: UK Open 2014 - 7-9 Mar Following Kev's fancies of Pipe and Webster, and going with these: 0.5 pts Richie Burnett to win UK open, 250/1 ew, sportingbet: - Richie has been playing very well recently, had a productive World Champs and has beenholdiNng his own on the circuit. If he can keep his doubling solid, and truly rediscover the Burnett of the 90's for a few days, with a good draw, he can go far. 2 pts James Wade to win UK Open 33/1 ew, various: I find the fact that James Wade isn't in the Premier League this year absolutely mind boggling. He's the second most successful player in PDC History, and simply put, is a winner. He's already made it clear that Barry Hearn citing his past mental issues and wanting to give him a rest as a load of rubbish, so James feels he has a point to prove. It says a lot about Wade that the only two people I'd make him a clear outsider against would be Taylor and MvG. Don't forget, Wade has won this competition before.. Twice. Wade is an opportunist, and if the big names begin to tumble, expect him to be there or there abouts. I'd be surprised if he didn't get to at least the semis.

Re: UK Open 2014 - 7-9 Mar Friday evening previews: 4pts K.Painter to beat R.Burnett 10/11 William Hill Painter has a good head to head record against Richie Burnett which is probably no surprise because Painter is a much more solid and reliable player. The Artist has won seven of their last eight meetings through the years so that should give him the confidence he needs to have that swagger on the stage which makes him play so well. Over this distance I fancy Painter will be too good again. We don’t need to worry about whether he’s good enough to win this match with him having beaten Barneveld, Wade and Taylor among other top players this year so given he’ll be feeling the better of the two men he’s worth taking here.
