Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Friday night TV preview: 4pts AFC Wimbledon vs Coventry - Over 2.5 goals 8/11 Stan James There’s goals in both these sides and I think we’ll see a pretty open cup tie here. I’m not sure AFC Wimbledon are strong enough defensively to repel this Coventry attacking core for 90 minutes so attack may well be their best form of defence. They have enough attacking power of their own to make an impact on this match though so this tie very much has a feel of over 2.5 goals about it to me. Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Hednesford v Crawley This is one of the games I can see an upset happening. The home side are having a tremendous season as they currently sit top of the Skrill North after gaining promotion last season. They have only lost once in the League all season. They have been scoring plenty of goals lately having netted 13 in their last five league matches and are generally impressing in the process. They will fancy their chances at home to a Crawley side who are stuck in the middle of a bad patch. They had been doing pretty well, only losing twice in the league, but that has all changed as they have lost their last four league matches. Given the lack of confidence at the moment they won’t fancy going to a non-league side brimming with confidence. Paddy Power’s 4/1 looks a sporting bet to me. Gloucester City v Fleetwood Onto the game I will be at on Saturday and naturally I will be hoping for a huge upset, but when it comes to punting the head has to rule the heart every time and I think Fleetwood will run out fairly comfortable winners. It’s not hard to see what the main issue is as they have conceded more goals than anyone else in the Skrill North (30), they haven’t won since August 26th and they currently sit in the bottom three. Fleetwood have a very strong front line and it’s easy to think Gloucester’s defence could struggle to contain them. The League 2 leaders have a side capable of doing pretty well in League 1 and if they take the game seriously it should be a routine success. The other advantage Fleetwood have is they are travelling to a ground that they will travel to in the League this season and that makes Gloucester’s home advantage less than it would be if they had their own ground. Ladbrokes go 29/20 on Fleetwood winning on the handicap and that looks well worth taking. Grimsby v Scunthorpe This game kicks off at 1pm on Saturday and although I am usually wary of derby matches I do think Scunthorpe are worth backing. I think Grimsby are flattered by their league position and they aren’t as good as fourth place suggests. They have won their last two games, but they played a badly out of form ten-man Forest Green and got an undeserved last minute winner at Woking last weekend. Prior to that they had lost two games on the bounce and I don’t think they are in great form. Scunthorpe have proven very hard to beat in League 2 this season being very tight defensively, whilst at the same time not being prolific in front of goal. I expect this game to be close, but that Scunthorpe’s quality will come out on top. BetVictor’s and Coral’s 13/8 looks well worth taking. Bishop’s Stortford v Northampton This is the game ITV have chosen to show on Sunday afternoon and on the face of it, it seems a fairly odd game to choose. I do however think it was chosen because there is a great chance of an upset. There has to be a chance that this could be a league fixture next season. Northampton are currently bottom of League 2 having only won two games all season, only one of which came in their last ten games, whilst Bishop’s Stortford are in the play-off places in the Skrill South at the moment. They are having a great season since being moved from the Skrill North and have a great home record winning five of their six games. They have lost just once in their last six and that run includes a cracking win over Ebbsfleet who are flying at the moment. So you have one team high on confidence featuring a striker in Kyle Vassell who is on fire, and one who can’t buy a win and are bottom of the Football League. Boylesports go 29/10 and that looks a decent price. Shortwood v Port Vale The final game of the First Round is on Monday night on BT Sport and features the lowest ranked side still in the competition. If you haven’t heard of Shortwood I don’t blame you as they are hardly a footballing giant. They play in the Calor League Divison One South & West and are based very close to Forest Green Rovers ground. They are basically the second biggest football team in a village! It has been an amazing achievement for them to get this far and they fully deserve their night in the spotlight after beating Aldershot in the last round. They is little hope of them going any further though and although Port Vale won’t enjoy going to Shortwood’s tiny ground, they should have very little trouble in beating a side at Step 8 of the pyramid. The gulf in class between the two of them is massive and Port Vale should really be shorter than 3/10. Paddy Power are 9/5 that they overcome 2 goals on the handicap and they should really be winning this by at least three goals. FA Cup treble Not surprisingly Port Vale and Fleetwood are going in the treble with pays 1.65/1 with BetVictor. The final team has to be League 1 leaders Leyton Orient who host Southport. They did become the first team to beat Cambridge United last Saturday, but I struggle to see them winning this even if Orient rest some players. Southport have an awful away record this term having just won once on the road and they will find this game tough.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November I'm following addpea's excellent analysis of the Gloucester/Fleetwood game and buying Fleetwood's supremacy at 1.2 to buy with Spreadex. If the game plays out as it should there will be goals and I reckon Fleetwood - who mix and match formations, and still don't really know the best blend for their very talented squad - will go 4-4-2 for this one and try to play on the front foot. Given that home clean sheets are rare for Gloucester this season, I've also sold the time of the 3rd Fleetwood goal at 81 with Spreadex. I've bought total goals in the Tamworth/Cheltenham game, 2.9 with Spreadex. Tamworth are fairly direct and they play it quite open, and by the looks of Cheltenham's recent performances there could be goals in this. I've also bought total goals at 3 in the Bishop's Stortford/Northampton game on Sunday. I might have fancied Bishop's Stortford for this one, but the suggestion of the imminent departure of Kyle Vassell on Monday puts a dampner on that, as do their defensive deficiencies. Northampton have added some bodies this week but mainly in attacking areas, with Jacob Blyth and Ricky Ravenhill coming in. But they'll also (potentially) be without key loanees, including Stuart Dallas who is their creative outlet on the left, and Luke Norris, who played as their one man up at Plymouth. Both sides have some directness to them and both have questionable defences - that means goals, I feel. One player goal minute trade that appeals is a buy of Sutton United's Jamie Taylor's goals at 12 with Sporting. It's a void if he doesn't start (and he did limp off against Eastleigh), but he has enough higher level experience to take any chances that come along - Sutton are progressive enough to create. There's a case to be made for selling the Sutton 2nd goal, too - 83 with Sporting: they're a fit side and I'd expect them to go at it from the off. Nothing particularly wrong with Kidderminster, but they've had a stormy week with Steve Burr's on-off move to Forest Green. Finally, a very wild one - a buy of Brackley's team goal minutes at Gillingham at 43. Peter Taylor hasn't had much chance to transmit his philosophy to the squad but there is defensive work to do, and he has a pretty poor cup record as a manager. Brackley are an experienced side who keep it tight and they'll no doubt attempt to do the same tomorrow, but for this trade to work I really need Gillingham to have a healthy lead so that Brackley notch a consolation.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November I was not at all impressed by Hereford's defence in their 4-1 defeat against Salibury. From the outset they were poor defending corners in particular. Whilst they will no doubt have been working hard to improve this aspect of their play, Hereford are nevertheless a team and club in a sorry decline. I feel they could struggle badly at Burton on Sunday and have bought the home side's goal rush at 23 with Sporting Index. A couple of seasons ago defender Phil Edwards was Accrington's joint leading scorer with 13. A couple of weeks ago he scored from a corner for Burton and could be a bit of value to score anytime against Hereford at 12/1 with Coral.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Taken some wild bets on Fleetwood which are a bit out of the ordinary for me. -2EH at 4.5, -3EH at 8.5 and -4EH at 17 all with coral. There is normally a couple of hammerings at this stage and I'm hopeful one will be there. Gills will probably win but I doubt if it will be that comfortable, Leon Legge is suspended at the back Davies will come in who is just as good imo. I can't imagine anyone will really be rested, 1. Because Taylor wants the job full-time and needs every win he can 2. We have little strength in depth. The fact that our old striker Gary Mulligan gets in their team tells me they aren't very good, he's bound to score now..:lol Brackley seem to be pretty good at the back and we aren't the most creative side so I expect it will be by 1 or 2 goals, I thought we would be shorter than 1.5 to be honest, but I'm not confident enough to take a bet..not going tomorrow, will be taking in the delights of Hastings v Walton & Hersham.

Blimey I am expecting us to lose but I really hope it doesn't get as bad as that!

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November In a rush so just a short post. Newport's injury crisis is fairly common news and Braintree are one of the form teams of the Conference at the moment. Assuming their pudding of a ground passes muster I fancy them to turn over the visitors. I can only repeat, in relation to Salisbury, what has been said before and I will probably take them giving up a goal start.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Not really had much time to research much but there's two I like the look of. I couldn't find many games where there is a vast difference in quality but one stuck out for me - Chesterfield V Daventry. Daventry ply their trade in the Southern League Division One, which is tier 8 unless I'm mistaken. This is probably the biggest game in their history after enjoying relatively progressive success in recent times after progrssing from the United Counties League in 2010. They now sit fourth in the league. Chesterfield, being in League Two are three divisions apart from Daventry and in my experience it's usually the teams that are playing poorly in their league that cause the upsets. Daventry might have a bit of confidence today against Chesterfield who have gone off the boil in the league. Word is that they should be sticking out a strong side today and are taking it seriously. Daventry also had to play midweek in the FA Trophy, although I'm not sure how many changes they made. I can't see them posing too much of a threat today and Chesterfield should be too strong for them. Chesterfield @ 1.28 - Coral / Chesterfield - 2 EH @ 2.6 - Betfred. In terms of "shocks" I'd have to go with Boreham Wood. Carlisle look to be a nice side to play. They've had a very hit and miss season, and haven't found keeping a clean sheet easy, although they have improved defensively of late. Today they will have to make one enforced defensive change at the back with Max Ehmer not being allowed to play. It's a long old trip down from Cumbria to face Boreham Wood in horrible conditions. Boreham Wood play in the Conference South and while they've been poor for most the season they have picked up of late. Carlisle had to play a midweek league game too. Boreham Wood haven't been great in the league but that is when the cup becomes a different prospect for non league teams. Boreham Wood @ 6 - Ladbrokes / Boreham Wood + 1 @ 1.81 - Ladbrokes.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Mixed on the spreads for me and the fate of my weekend's spread portfolio depends on what happens in the Bishop's Stortford game - Fleetwood's supremacy made up with a profit but I handed it all back with the third goal trade; Sutton didn't score a second for a small loss and the biggest loss of all was on the Tamworth/Cheltenham game, which finished with one goal for a 1.9 point loss. But the boldest play was the best of all: Brackley's goal minutes made up with a 26 point profit. Good call by addpea on Fleetwood's handicap, and by Jase on Boreham Wood +1.

Huge performance from Gloucester today and with better luck and finishing we might have even won it. Having said that Fleetwood missed a pen and an open goal. Highlights will be well worth watching on itv later as it was a cracking game. Just hope we can start performing like that in the league now. Sent from my GT-I8190N using PL Forum

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Thought I'd revisit this stomping ground with a few views on my own team, Bishop's Stortford. Problem is, i don't know too much about Northampton other than the obvious. They are bottom of League Two, struggling and have brought in a few loanees. We have heard from Barnet that loanee George Sykes will be available for us today after denying permission in the earlier rounds. Might have something to do with their 6-0 defeat at Preston yesterday! I doubt Sykes will start, but he'll come off the bench to replace Cliff Akurang all things being equal. As for bets, I don't see a goalfest. I think we'll be very nervous early on, although we usually take the game to teams from the start. Our keeper has been in superb form and an additional loanee from Wycombe who played last week has ensured that we shouldn't miss the suspended George Allen at the back. I'd be delighted to be proved wrong and, of course, the full-timers could fill their boots if we tire late on (see Mansfield v St Albans!). Don't write us off if we go behind. We have come back twice recently v Hayes and Tonbridge. Relatively speaking, we have a manager who can change things from the bench. A few possible bets. Kyle Vassell is our most obvious goalscorer and should give you a run for your money. Less obvious is Matty Jackson who can hit a very decent free-kick and, my favourite outside, Sean Francis (was available at 80/1 midweek) who is the danger from set pieces in the box. I like the look of the bookings market - was 28-32 on Spindex last I looked. We are a feisty side in the mould of our manager, Rod Stringer. We are without Allen and midfielder Anthony Church for racking up too many cards. If we get in the lead, we'll time-waste and generally annoy the ref. If we are chasing a game, we'll get stuck in. I've bought at 32. It's the biggest game since the 3rd round replay v Middlesboro in the early 80s. I'm excited! Good luck.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Very interesting stuff, LG - great to have you back here and congrats on a good season so far (more to come, I feel). It's pretty hard to get a handle on Northampton at the moment, as there has been a question mark over two regulars and two new loanees to add into the mix - latest is that Luke Norris starts but Stuart Dallas won't. With Norris and good back up, I think their strike force looks good but they haven't got the blend right in the middle at all - Darren Carter has been disappointing this season, but Ricky Ravenhill starts they will have a terrier they have been lacking. He's also a yellow card waiting to happen and I take your point about bookings - a generous 28 to buy at Spreadex now.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Yes the buy on spreadex is 28 but the only concern is the ref who is S Martin and his stats on soccerbase do not look promising and does not appear to be the most prolific yellow card man. Saying that if I am reading the stats right on the guardian touchline site Northampton have averaged 2.6 yellows away from home. Am sure I will get tempted in by kick off. BTW was at Boreham Wood yesterday to see an inept performance by the ref, my team the mighty Cumbrians and some jobsworth patrolling the away end. Have bought the goal minutes of Francis at 4 with unsporting

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Tomorrow night's live game doesn't have complete spreads out yet but I've bought Chris Lines' goal minutes at 11 with Sporting. He's not as prolific as he was in his early career, and only has one this season for Port Vale, but he strikes set-piece free-kicks and often takes an attacking midfield role. Shortwood United are an attacking outfit, but open too, and they have just a single clean sheet in the league. Vale are inconsistent but even if they have an off day they should muddle though; if they are on it, they have plenty of talent and they could really get amongst it - for that reason I've bought their supremacy at 2.1 with Spreadex.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November Cheers Ships I just don't have the time to do the work that turns a profit. But I do occasionally take a look at how the maestros are doing it. Back after a 5-hour drive from the game. Just wishing Sean Francis' first half header had hit the net and not the crossbar, such are the fine lines! Best of luck for future profits.

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November 4pts Port Vale to win to nil 5/4 Bet365 This is a game that only the FA Cup can produce and the romantics would love to see Shortwood progress but the reality is the gulf in class here could just be too big. There are five divisions between these two sides which is a lot to bridge and while Shortwood have absolutely nothing to lose having seen that Salisbury awaits the winners I expect Micky Adams to ensure his side remain professional and get the job done without giving the home side any incentives. Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November I've bought penalty goal minutes in the Shortwood/Vale match at 15 with Spreadex. Fired-up part-timers against canny pros can often produce penalty-box incidents. A bit of rain can help too, and although the forecast is largely dry (mist is more of a danger), the pitch will have plenty of give in it, encouraging last-ditch tackles. I could have bought Vale's pen goal mins at 13 (Sporting), but I prefer this trade as it is only a touch more expenive and it allows some coverage of Shortwood,

Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November What an incredible last few minutes - on 88 minutes I was looking at three missed trades, then the dodgy penalty, meaning penalty goal minutes made up with 74 points profit, then Chris Lines' 90th minute header making up with 79 points profit. Both those meant the supremacy trade made up with a 1.9 profit. I'll settle for over 150 points bagged in a couple of minutes. Great call by Kevshat on Vale winning to nil and by addpea on the treble, and Vale on the handicap.
