International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov

Recommended Posts

The third biggest ranking event of the season begins in China on Sunday. This should be a good tournament with the matches starting best of 11 frames and getting longer as it goes along. All the event is on Eurosport and with O'Sullivan in the event there will be lots made of it. Draw, schedule and format here: http://www.snooker.org/res/index.asp?event=272

Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Tournament preview: 2pts ew M.Selby to win International Championship 10/1 Paddy Power (1/2 1-2) One man who is bigger than usual is Mark Selby and with his record in China I think he is worth taking this week. Selby has had a quiet couple of weeks by his high standards but it wasn’t long ago that he was playing in PTC finals so there isn’t a lot wrong with his game. Selby always raises his level for the bigger events like the UK Championship and the Masters and this is on a par with those so we should see the best of the former number one here. He has managed to find a section without the big names so has everything ready to go well this week. 1pt ew M.Williams to win International Championship 33/1 Coral (1/2 1-2) Mark Williams is another player who has an excellent record overseas and he is overpriced this week too. He is in Ronnie O’Sullivan’s quarter but O’Sullivan runs into a couple of in form players early on in the tournament and by the time he gets to a scheduled date with Williams anything could have happened. Take O’Sullivan out and in terms of big names there aren’t many in his way prior to the semi final. Williams has won one tournament this season and been in the quarter finals of two others so should go well this week. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov 1st quarter preview: 1pt A.Mehta to win 1st Quarter 16/1 Stan James Aditya Mehta could just be that man. He’ll be hitting Chengdu with his confidence on a real high having made it to the final of the Indian Open just over a week ago. That shows he belongs in this company and that is a big thing for him. His run to the quarter final would be Rod Lawler, Woollaston or O’Brien and then one of Trump, McManus, a wildcard, Mike Dunn or Ryan Day for a place in the quarter final. If something happens to Trump the Indian’s path really opens up so 16/1 to win this quarter straight off the back of his run in Delhi looks a big price on a guy who is clearly playing good snooker. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Sunday previews: 4pts J.Higgins (-2.5 frames) to beat J.Swail 5/6 Bet365 John Higgins remains a class act and while he can sometimes be vulnerable early on in tournaments I think part of that disappears here because he has been in India and China for the last two weeks so he will be acclimatised to the conditions. Swail has done really well to get back on the tour and qualifying for tournaments but this is another step up again and one which could just be beyond him. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/higgins-vs-swail-betting-john-higgins-can-come-through-opening-round-with-plenty-in-hand 4pts R.O'Sullivan vs A.McGill - Over 8.5 frames 8/11 Paddy Power This has the potential to be a closer match than it looks at first glance. When the two met in a PTC earlier in the season it went to a deciding frame and you could well argue that McGill is in better form now if his run to the semi final of the Asian PTC last week is anything to go by. O’Sullivan could be a little rusty having not played a big event for so long so while I think the world champion will win he may need more than 8.5 frames before he does so. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Monday previews: 4pts J.Trump vs A.McManus - Over 8.5 frames 8/11 Coral I think this will be a longer match than the bookmakers thing it will be. One of the reasons for that is the fact that McManus has had a match this week and will have acclimatised to the conditions nicely whereas Trump will have to find his feet from scratch. Trump hasn’t exactly been blowing opponents away this season and he isn’t the best against scrappy opponents. There’s enough to think this one will go 6-3 or closer. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/trump-vs-mcmanus-betting-alan-mcmanus-can-push-trump-closer-than-odds-suggest 4pts X.Guodong (-1.5 frames) to beat A.Burden 5/6 Unibet Burden is a player I like over the shorter distances but I’m not sure over this distance. At any rate with the form Guodong is in and the confidence he should be bringing into the tournament I like the Chinese youngster here. He showed a good all round game in the Shanghai Masters and if he has that form with him here he’ll win this with a bit in hand. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Tuesday early previews: 4pts J.Higgins (-2.5 frames) to beat M.Stevens 11/10 Paddy Power Historically Higgins has a good record against Matthew Stevens and I see no reason why that won’t continue here. Higgins has shown this week he’s in good touch and has a stronger all round game than Stevens. Stevens is capable, there’s no doubt about that but he often falls short against the very top players and I think that could again here. Stevens hasn’t shown a lot of form since the Wuxi semi final which makes me think a repeated one sided win for Higgins will take place here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/higgins-vs-stevens-betting-john-higgins-can-see-off-stevens-with-a-bit-to-spare-once-again 4pts M.Allen (-2.5 frames) to beat D.Harold 9/10 Boylesports I think Mark Allen will have too much for Dave Harold here. Harold is old school and even now it is wrong to write him off against certain opponents but Allen is one who he could struggle against. By and large Harold isn’t a heavy scorer and he can struggle against the top scorers in the game because they win frames in one visit, something Harold is rarely able to do. That ability can see Allen through comfortably here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/allen-vs-harold-betting-mark-allen-s-scoring-power-can-see-him-brush-harold-aside-in-china

Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Tuesday middle session previews: 4pts X.Guodong vs M.Fu - Over 9.5 frames 11/10 William Hill This looks one of the closer matches of the round to me. Both men are playing well and both are particularly scoring well which means we’ll see a few frames won in one visit. That says to me that neither is going to run away with this match so the over 9.5 frames looks a good bet to me. 6-4 or 6-5 either way sees the bet land and I think this has all the makings of being that close. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/guodong-vs-fu-betting-second-round-match-looks-very-close-on-paper 3pts D.Junhui (-3.5 frames) to beat J.Wattana 6/5 Bet365 I think Ding will be too good for the Thaiphoon here. He scores so heavily that nearly every shot Wattana plays will have a lot of pressure on it. Wattana will be under heavy pressure to take any chance he does get too because he’s not going to get many in this match and that’s another factor. Ding wasn’t brilliant in the first round but he was still comfortably better than Wattana was and I expect a comfortable win for the Shanghai Masters champion here. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Tuesday afternoon previews: 4pts N.Robertson vs T.Un-Nooh - Over 8.5 frames 8/11 Bet365 While I think Robertson will win this match eventually I think there’s enough to be made of Un-Nooh’s form and win over Robertson earlier in the season to suggest that this will be a bit closer than the odds compilers suggest. At 8/11 the over 8.5 frames line looks interesting because if Un-Nooh scores like he did in the first round he is more than capable of winning three frames here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/robertson-vs-un-nooh-betting-thailand-s-un-nooh-can-cause-robertson-a-few-problems 3pts L.Wenbo (+2.5 frames) to beat R.O'Sullivan 6/5 Coral This should be a great game. Liang Wenbo really is in good nick and he doesn’t worry about anyone’s reputation. He’ll go for his shots but with his confidence soaring it will be no surprise if he makes everything he goes for. One thing is for sure is Ronnie will have to play better than he did in the first round to come through this. Of course that is in him but he may be pushed very close in this one. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Wednesday early TV previews: 4pts M.Fu (-1.5 frames) to beat Z.Xintong 7/10 Boylesports Zhao Xintong has had an excellent week so far but I think he could well meet his match here. Barry Hawkins clearly wasn’t at the races to lose 6-1 to the youngster in the last round but Fu has been consistent all season and will see a chance to go much further this week. Fu’s tactical game is very good but as always with him the key is how well he scores. He’s scored well this week too so I expect him to have too much for the wildcard. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/xintong-vs-fu-betting-marco-fu-can-have-too-much-for-xintong-on-the-tv-table 3pts N.Robertson (-2.5 frames) to beat P.Ebdon 21/20 Boylesports Neil Robertson is playing some sublime snooker at the minute and if he continues that here he’ll win. The question is whether Ebdon will let him play that sort of snooker. He’s no idiot. He’ll attempt to make this scrappy. Funnily enough these two have met four times in China in the past and Ebdon has won all four meetings. Robertson had a history of not playing well in China back then but that’s changed somewhat now and unless Ebdon finds his scoring boots quickly I expect him to be sent packing in style. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Wednesday afternoon TV previews: 4pts M.Stevens (+2.5 frames) to beat D.Junhui 4/5 Stan James This will be Ding’s toughest test so far this week and while you wouldn’t bet against him coming through it given the form he has been in recently, I certainly think he’ll have to battle hard to come through. Stevens is showing good form both this week and this season and his win over Higgins and the margin of victory was that of a confident man. I think he’ll win at least four frames here if not the six he needs to knock Ding out. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/stevens-vs-ding-betting-matthew-stevens-can-push-ding-all-the-way-in-last-16-clash 4pts M.Davis to beat L.Wenbo 8/11 Paddy Power I like Davis in this match. We should take nothing away from Wenbo in his win over O’Sullivan but Ronnie did seem to die on his backside at 4-1 up and missed a number of easy balls and I’m not so sure Davis will do that because his competitive focus will be better than Ronnie’s was given that he hadn’t played a major tournament for a while. Wenbo has to back up an emotional win with the adrenalin pumping in a pretty quick turnaround here which is never easy so I’ll stick with Davis in this one. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Quarter final previews: 4pts M.Fu vs M.Selby - Over 9.5 frames 6/5 Paddy Power I think this will be a close quarter final. Both men look to be playing well and both never give in and fight until the end. They both have an excellent all round game so neither looks to have an advantage over the other so I expect a real tight battle for a place in the semi finals. Over 9.5 frames is 6/5 which looks a big price given how well both are playing this week. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/fu-vs-selby-betting-pick-of-the-quarter-finals-looks-a-close-match-on-paper 4pts R.Day vs J.Perry - Over 9.5 frames 11/10 Paddy Power Both these players are showing good form this week so I think we’ll see another close match here. Both are scoring really well. Ryan Day might be freerolling here a little bit. I’m sure if you’d offered him £17,500 and a quarter final spot after a poor trot recently he’ll have taken it. Anything from here is a bonus. Perry is in good form and will have eyes on the title so both have plenty of incentive. Given how well both are scoring I think we’ll see a few frames here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/day-vs-perry-betting-back-to-form-day-can-push-perry-all-the-way-in-chengdu-quarter-final 4pts G.Dott vs L.Wenbo - Over 9.5 frames 11/10 Paddy Power I think this will be another close quarter final in a round of close matches. Dott never gives in and never gives so much as an inch while along with Ding, Wenbo is the form horse at the minute. Wenbo is scoring well when the chances come but inevitably he’ll give Dott chances, that’s just the way he plays the game. With both scoring well it could well take at least 10 frames to separate these two. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/dott-vs-wenbo-betting-dott-and-wenbo-may-need-at-least-10-frames-to-be-separated 4pts P.Ebdon (+2.5 frames) to beat D.Junhui 10/11 Ladbrokes Peter Ebdon’s return to form has been a surprise but having seen him play it is no co-incidence. He is a much better player when he goes on the attack and plays to a good tempo. That’s the way to win this match so that bodes well for him. Ding will be no walk in the park though so this could end up being very tight. I think Ebdon can push the Chinese star all the way though. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov Semi final 1 preview: 4pts J.Perry vs M.Fu - Over 1.5 centuries 5/6 Paddy Power Both men look in excellent form in this tournament. Perry made no fewer than three centuries in his quarter final against Ryan Day. Marco Fu also made a century in his quarter final so they are scoring very well between them. They have scored nine centuries between them in the tournament and with the main table playing so well I think there is every chance we’ll see a couple more from them in a high quality semi final. Re: International Championship 27 Oct - 3 Nov 2nd semi final preview: 4pts D.Junhui (-2.5 frames) to beat G.Dott Evs Paddy Power Graeme Dott has played well this week but I think this could be a task too far for him. Although he beat Liang Wenbo comfortably the Chinese player had a few chances which he didn’t take and the way Ding is playing if he gets those chances you feel he will take them. Ding’s scoring power over this distance should be too much for Dott. Dott will give it everything as usual but Ding looks a class above at the minute.
