Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May 2.42 at Benfica DNB at the moment seem to be value for me! I Think Benfica are a bit underestimated here and I think the odds on them may drop a bit this week. Benfica star players (Gaitan, Cardozo, Luizao) can give Chelsea problems any day of the week.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May I should say some things... Yesterday, Benfica lost the first place to FC Porto and lost their chance to fight for the championship. It's still possible, but FC Porto surely will take it in the last day. So, Benfica has taken a big blow physically and mentally before this match, as they lost the chance to do an historic treble at the buzzer. The championship is gone, so Benfica have a chance for two cups. The first one is Europa League, and obviously is the most important one. Next there is the Portuguese Cup but it nothing compared to Europa League. Benfica's team look really bad physically since the first match against Fenerbahce. Only managed to qualify to the final after a heroic physical effort from all the players. Next match, they looked absolutely horrid in physical terms (draw 1-1 at home against Estoril). Against FC Porto, team looked in really bad shape physically, especially in the last 15 minutes of each half. The 2-1 for FC Porto was in the last minutes, and tells a lot about how Benfica might be looking mentally and physically. They are devasted. Still, this is Europa League final, and they are a very talented side, full of talented south americans but I can't see Benfica hanging on for more than 60/75 minutes. Also, if this goes to ET, I don't believe that Benfica will stay fit enough to hang on until penalty shootout. I am expecting to see a very strong Benfica in the first 30 minutes of the first half and the first 15 minutes of the second half.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May 4pts Both teams to score 4/5 Stan James This should be an open final. Both sides have good attacking players in their ranks and I think both will go out and try to win this tournament rather than stay safe and play not to lose. Neither side are ultra tight at the back. Newcastle opened Benfica up at will in their quarter final at times and Chelsea have much more pace and quality going forward but they can be opened up themselves at the back so I like the thought of both teams scoring in what should be an entertaining Europa League final. Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May kevshat, I actually feel that some trends around sportsbooks are quite strange. For example, Betfair has the unders on 1.75 right now, and they should be something like 1.95. Both teams like to attack, attack well and regularly score. Benfica didn't score this season in 3/4 official matches, the most. Both games with Barcelona and Fener away were the only ones I can remember. They attack quite well from the center-right, with one-twos between Gaitan, Salvio and Cardozo dictating the flow. Gaitan, Cardozo and Lima have powerful shots, and can long range quite efficiently. Benfica's long throws are also very dangerous. They scored the third goal against Fener from one, and their goal in Porto's last saturday was from a throw-in near the corner flag. As for key players, Artur (GK) is delivering great exhibitions in EL, and Chelsea might have to creat some chances until breaking the deadlock. Matic (CM), ex - Chelsea is the best player on the portuguese championship right now, but I think it will have difficulties to stop Chelsea's midfield and eventually will show fatigue. Cardozo and Lima (Strikers) are very dangerous, and can score goals with half of an opportunity. Chelsea has enough offensive power to bypass Benfica's defensive line, which depends too much on offside trap (Torres usually knows how to counter it) and Garay covering ability. LB will surely be Melgarejo due to Maxi Pereira absence on the right - back (Andre Almeida will play as a RB due to this, but has been playing for LB in tight matches). Melgarejo is a very exploitable weak point. Also, some crucial players were on conditioned training this Tuesday and didn't train with the main team: Matic, Enzo Perez (both CM) and Salvio (Right-Winger), as they are fatigued physically. But they will surely be in the starting eleven The whole team is tired mentally due to excessives matches this season and last game against FC Porto. Coach says they are alright, although I seriously doubt it. They might not handle excessive pressure during the game, and legs might 'break' in the last 15 minutes of each half, like it happened against Fenerbahce, Estoril and FC Porto. That is the most info I can give about Benfica strengths and weaknesses, from a neutral point of view (I'm from Sporting Portugal). I'm not saying that Benfica will not win this. Maybe all that I said before is bollocks, will not show itself during the match (although I highly doubt it) and after all, this is an Europa League Final. They have a great chance, IMO. I give them 35-40%. If they were ok and won/drew against FC Porto, I would give them 45%. My bets for this are BTTS, but I also have a small stake on Chelsea for Winner 12/13.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May 1pt J.Terry to score first 33/1 William Hill While there are plenty of attacking players on the park Chelsea do score a lot of goals from set pieces so it could be worth chancing that John Terry starts and if he does he looks a big price at 33/1. Terry really attacks set pieces so if Chelsea get an early free kick or a corner I’m sure he’ll go up and he can definitely get his head on one of them. European sides don’t defend aerial balls as well as we do over here so there’s plenty of mileage in the Chelsea captain opening the scoring on their big night. Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May The curse http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/espnfcunited/id/5660?cc=3436 Benfica, of course, have a long and proud tradition in Europe. They have reached nine European finals in total, including five European Cup finals in the Eusebio-inspired 1960s. But a dark cloud hovers over their rich past in continental competition. Of those nine finals, the Portuguese side have won only two: the first two, under the guidance of Hungarian coach Bela Guttmann. After beating a Real Madrid side containing Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas 5-3 in the 1962 final to retain their crown, the coach saw fit to ask for a big pay rise, which was flatly refused. The club and coach fell out and as the Hungarian walked away he said in a fit of fury: "Benfica without me will never again win the European Cup!" The phrase has become part of footballing folklore in Portugal, with each failure by Benfica to land European silverware adding more weight to the "Guttmann curse." Since the Hungarian cast his spell, Benfica have reached six European finals, falling short each time. The last time they did so was in Vienna in 1990, near the cemetery where Guttmann is laid to rest. On the eve of the final against Milan, Eusebio went to the grave to pray for forgiveness and ask the gods to lift the curse. To no avail, as a Frank Rijkaard goal made it another final defeat for Benfica.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May The Curse of Benfica In 1962 their manager at the time Bela Guttmann lead Benfica to a sensational victory over Real Madrid leading them to a second Europa Cup title. After the final Guttmann approached the Benfica board of directors and asked for a pay rise, but, despite the success he had bought the club, he was turned down. He left the club in big controvesy an he allegedly cursed the club, declaring "Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever win a European Cup". The "curse" have been a shadow over Benfica since and before the 1990 final, the star Eusebio even went to his grave praying for the curse to be broken.......unsuccessfully.... After the curse of Guttman, Benfica have played 5 finals in Europe, lost them all...

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May I really fancy Chelsea for this game. They have been much maligned recently but on a fabulous run of form: 6 wins and 2 draws from the last 8 games, and it could have been 8 from 8 had late goals not cost them. They were really impressive against Man United at Old Trafford - even though Man U had nothing to play for, the way they controlled the game is pretty much what Benitez wants a repeat of. Player-wise I think they are better set up for Europe; for instance, Torres. No goals in the League since December, but a good scoring record in European competitions recently; with him benefitting from a little extra time on the ball. The real trump card, I think, will be Oscar. I think he's struggled a bit in the Premier League, especially against more physical opposition. And he hasn't been helped by having to play a lot of games in a wide position. With Hazard out, I think we'll see Oscar in a more favoured central position behind the strikers with Ramires and Lampard in midfield. Hazard will be a big miss, but I feel without him there is a better, more disciplined balance towards the formation. It's difficult to assess the true strength of the Benfica side, previously unbeaten although in a much weaker league. But I feel fairly sure Chelsea would have qualified out of their group and I think they are a little bit better. No way would I take Chelsea at evens, but I think somewhere around 2.3 is a good price for them, meaning good value around the 2.5 mark.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May I don't know about the curse, it might have a psychological burden on benefica players. My bookmaker shows that everybody is betting on benefica. I have watched the odds on chelsea go up from 2.2 to 2.55. But I would differ, plus in Europe Benefica hasn't been too good away from home, they have lost to Fenerbahche, draw to New Castle. I might go a bit safe and bet on Chelsea winning the whole thing at 1.75.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May If this match took place 2 weeks ago, I simply wouldn't know where to place my bet. Benfica was in great shape, wining matches as they should, good standing in all fronts... But now it seems like it's all falling apart for them. Coach is complaining about the squad fatigue and whatnot after long long season. Both sides will have couple of missing players, Benfica will miss Maxi Pereira, while Chelsea will have to make it without Demba Ba, Terry, Mikel, Bertrand and maybe Hazard. Chelsea made some amazing things this season, played incredible amount of games and they still are able to compete in all competitions. They can speak what they want about Benitez, he has done good job at Chelsea and his team performed very very well at the times they needed to step up. With that said I have no worries and am sure that Rafa will choose best team possible and that they will give all they can in order to win. Low morale of Benfica pushes me to back Chelsea. But their injury list pushes me away... As it is, I wouldn't risk placing money on a winner and I would suggest BTS @ 1.8, b365.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May Smacks of a draw for me, ET and even penalties, both sides are not adverse to letting in goals, but cant see an outright winner. The 7/4 - 15/8 with Sportingbet, for the game to be won in ET or on Penalties is worth a shout. 9/2 ET 21/4 Penalties Backem both, 7/4 to 15/8, if you do your sums right.:ok

Big games can often have fewer corners than expected, because both teams try hard to keep possession and not concede corners. I would avoid corner bets personally.

woudnt it pay more to just back the draw at 3.3

All over the thread people are saying benefica away from home are not as good, etc, etc. But surely its not as bad since normally when they play away from home, the home team has 99% of the supporters and the home team enjoys playing on the home ground, etc. Amsterdam may not be Benefica's home venue but it isnt chelsea's home venue either. Still expecting chelsea supporters to outnumber Benefica's but surely the home-away theory doesnt hold much in this final.

I also like the idea of Torres scoring tonight, he has not be great at finding the back of the net in the Premiership but has bagged a few goals in the Europa League. William Hill are offering 5/1 for Torres to score and Chelsea to win in 90 mins.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May 15/05/2013 21:45 EUROPA LEAGUE, FINAL BENFICA (Portugal) vs CHELSEA (England) Tip (1X2): CHELSEA @ 2.62 Bookmaker quoted final almost equal. In my oppinion, it is clear that is a favorite: Chelsea. Benfica, in a difficult psychological state, the portuguese lost the championship by 92 minutes into the match with Porto! Portuguese usually perform well in this tournament, and often comes to the most advanced stages. Let you remember that not so long ago, just 3 portuguese club played in the semi-finals, eventually Porto won the trophy. However, Benfica has long been the second club of Portugal, and in European competition has already forgotten when something won. So this is the final, and Benfica team is not in the best mood, as over the weekend the team almost lost the title this season, in Portugal. In the deciding game on the road lost to FC Porto - 1:2, and the winning goal was scored in the 90th minute. Thus, one round before the end of the championship -1 point inferior to Porto. Admit that the team will be hard to tune into another tough match after that decisive match vs Porto only 4 days ago. Chelsea also lost everything can achieve in this season. The victory in the Europa League will provide an opportunity to save the season & winning the League of Europe this is a sweet pill to swallow for the team wich had a mixed season. For Benitez will also win some "swan song", it is clear that in the next season, Chelsea will be a new coach. This trophy is not in the club museum at Chelsea, and the club's owner is clearly not against him. Their tasks in the championship decided, winning a ticket to the Champions League, so the team fits in a great mood for this match. Chelsea performs well in recent times, been almost two months, Chelsea has not lost in the Premier League, and the game show from the londoners are quite nice. However, they have today is a serious loss - Hazard, plus a questionable Terry. In the Europa League, both teams played virtually the same, and highlight some of them difficult. However, the advantage would be desirable to give Chelsea, who can tune in important matches against strong opponents. This team can lose points in games with weak clubs, but statistics meetings against strong teams suggests that londoners are rarely losing to them. For example, in the Premier League, playing against the teams first 7, Chelsea lost only once - at home to champion ManUnited - 2:3, and in all the other games are not lost or won. Look forward to an interesting match, fight and win the minimum Chelsea by one goal. I suggest you put today, pretty safe bet - Chelsea win after 90 minutes.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May Benfica is not afraid by this Chelsea team, they know they are better team, they can win this one easily than we might think. Atl.Madrid demolished Chelsea and Benfica play similar football so I think it's gonna be hard night for Chelsea. Chelsea - Benfica 1:3

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May i have taken luiz to score @ Betsafe, odds 8. Has been playing outstanding lately, and has scored in the last 2 matches. Great danger on freekicks, and he should be apart of the offensive play, as he's moved up in the midfield next to Lampard. He might know what he's up against, as it's his old club. Just a fun bet for the evening. Hopefully a lot of goals!

I've noticed that big games like this quite often have fewer corners than expected.

Re: Europa League Final > Chelsea v Benfica > 15th May Two heart breaking injury - time winners for Benfica in the space of a week!

Watch 4:33 ...shattering. Context is they went through season unbeaten as did Porto who trailed them by 2 points. So at the Dragao they only needed to avoid defeat in the 2nd last match of the season...... 92nd minute :cry
