County Championship 2013

Re: County Championship 2013 One for me in Friday's matches. 4pts Surrey to beat Yorkshire 11/10 BetVictor Clearly Surrey aren't having a great season but now that Adams has left and genuine Surrey people are involved with the day to day running of the group I think their fortunes could improve. Ironically Adams was given the boot after a couple of decent enough performances in the Championship and with Kevin Pietersen back this week I think we'll see an improvement from them again. Yorkshire are an interesting case. They are top of the table against all the odds but now they have to stay there. The return to form of Andrew Gale has been helpful and they will need him to go well this week because Gary Ballance heads off with England after two days of this game. With no Root or Bairstow there is still a bit of a hole in this Yorkshire batting line up, particularly with Jaques out injured. Jack Brooks provides a timely return with the ball but Surrey have a decent bowling attack out in this game which should go well in these conditions. Surrey certainly have the better batting line up with KP, Ponting and Solanki in the side and if they can get stuck in with the ball this is a match they can definitely win and kick start their season with.

Re: County Championship 2013 No joy with that one as the early rain put paid to chances of a result. Been a good first half of the season though. Am currently +19.85pts for the match bets and there are a few outrights in very good position, particularly the 40/1 Moeen top D2 bat. He's almost 350 ahead of the division bar two men and he's 200 ahead of his nearest challenger so that looks good if he stays fit. With the T20 about to begin the Championship takes a back seat for a couple of weeks so I'll unstick the thread and stick it again when the comp resumes.

Re: County Championship 2013 The Championship returns for a week and I'll go with two for Monday. Nice to know we're not going to get any weather issues. 3pts Derbyshire to beat Durham 9/4 Ladbrokes Derbyshire look a high price here to me. They might be bottom going into this match but they haven't been 'that' bad so far this season. In fact for 2.5-3 days they've been quite competitive but poor final days have cost them. The T20 break will have done them no harm and they have won a few matches in that competition and built up a little bit of confident which can serve them well here. Durham have gone the other way. They were doing excellently in four day cricket before the T20 break but they haven't won many matches in T20 and the one they did win they should have lost so their confidence has taken a little bit of a dent. Another issue is that Paul Collingwood misses out with his split thumb and Graham Onions is with England so will miss at least the first two days of this match if not longer. Derbyshire have a full strength side to choose from apart from Mark Turner but there's more than enough in their bowling attack in the likes of Footitt, Groenewald and Palladino to suggest the visitors can bowl Durham out twice. If their batsmen can put up enough runs, and that should be a lot easier in the absence of Onions, then Derbyshire have a good chance here. 4pts Somerset to beat Sussex 11/10 BetVictor Somerset picked up a crucial win over Derbyshire in their final match prior to the T20 break and they have gone well in the T20 so Somerset's season might just be coming to life finally. Their problems in four day cricket earlier in the season were with the bat but with Nick Compton back in town and Alviro Petersen also back from international duty their batting looks a lot more secure all of a sudden. They've been bowling sides out well enough so we should expect them to do that here, especially with the talented George Dockrell around to take advantage of what should be dry conditions in the heat of the recent and current weather. Sussex will be without their captain Ed Joyce for the first couple of days. He is on international duty so Chris Nash will lead the side for the opening half of the match. Sussex have just started to lose their way in the last month or so. A couple of their big players have lost a bit of their early season form and their T20 campaign can't have done anything for confidence either. In their last couple of Championship matches Sussex have struggled to bowl sides out and they'll need to be at their best with the ball to get through this powerful Somerset line up. I'm not convinced though and with the pressure all on Sussex to win here to go back above Yorkshire at the top, I think Somerset can play with more freedom and pick up another crucial four day win.

Re: County Championship 2013 Bad week last week. Need a good one this week before the two week break for the end of the T20. 4pts Warwickshire to beat Nottinghamshire Evs Paddy Power I like the look of Warwickshire in this match. Finally the penny has dropped with them and they are on a winning run. That's no surprise of course because for the first time in a while they have no major injuries and England call ups aren't affecting them. Keith Barker makes a massive impression on this side with the ball but with the bat, giving their batting line up good depth. With Ateeq Javid coming into his own now too Warwickshire have a strong, well balanced side. Nottinghamshire have struggled to bowl sides out in this competition all season and if their batting was to let them down then they would be in trouble. Of course they have a strong batting line up but it can misfire and against this Warwickshire bowling attack, if it was going to misfire then it could well be in this match. One thing Notts don't have is a lights out spinner which Warwickshire do have in Jeetan Patel and in another week of hot weather that could also be key so I like the look of Warwickshire here especially with the winning momentum they've picked up over the last week or so.

One more this week. 4pts Worcestershire to beat Gloucestershire 10/11 Stan James Worcestershire have been going well in the County Championship this season. They have the top batsman in the division in their ranks in Moeen Ali and one of the top bowlers in Alan Richardson and that is a good platform to go from. Gloucestershire don't really have that and what is worse is this hasn't been a good Cheltenham festival for the hosts. They failed to defend 411 against Kent last week and then have been humped twice here in the T20, the common denominator both times being their young, inexperienced bowling attack which just can't stop the flow of runs. There's enough in this Worcestershire batting line up to take advantage of that, especially if Moeen Ali gets going and with the likes of Shantry and Chowdry backing up Richardson with the ball the Royals look more than worth a go here. Re: County Championship 2013 Cheers mate. They're going well at the minute. Amazing what impact Keith Barker has on them. If Middlesex go on and win this week it is a genuine 5 way race for the title. Will be a fantastic finale to the season.

Re: County Championship 2013 Barker is a beast, first class average of 30 with the bat ! I've stuck a few quid up on betfair for them to win the division, if they can keep that bowling attack fit / out of international duty there is every chance they can go close. Doubtless missed the best price but their tails are up going into the home straight.

Re: County Championship 2013 3 for me this week. 4pts Middlesex to beat Durham 4/5 Bet365 Middlesex are without James Harris and Toby Roland-Jones this week but Steven Finn not playing for England and being available for Middlesex is a boost and counters some of that loss. With the bat Adam Voges and Eoin Morgan are available and it might benefit Joe Denly to go up and open alongside the in form Sam Robson. Durham have Paul Collingwood back this week but how fit he is remains to be seen and it is only human nature for them to have an eye on their T20 quarter final against Northants which takes place the day after this match ends. Graham Onions could be a problem for the Middlesex batsmen on the Lords slope but I think the home side have much the better batting line up and no worse a bowling attack so they look a more than fair bet to me even at 4/5. 4pts Warwickshire to beat Yorkshire Evs Bet365 Yorkshire's batting is really decimated going into this match. Obviously Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow are with England while Joe Sayers and Phil Jaques are injured and although Andrew Gale is in the squad he's coming back from an injury himself and he might not be fully fit. This squad Yorkshire have named looks top heavy with bowlers but someone will need to score runs. Warwickshire welcome a host of experienced players back after their disappointing T20 campaign. Ian Westwood, Jim Troughton and Tim Ambrose all return while Boyd Rankin is available too. Keith Barker and Chris Wright are losses with the ball but Rankin, Woakes and Clarke are a decent pace trio and Jeetan Patel should enjoy the dry conditions even at Headingley. Warwickshire have the bowlers to break through this weak looking Yorkshire batting line up and they have the batsmen of their own to keep up their recent revival. 4pts Kent to beat Worcestershire 11/8 Stan James Worcestershire look a little light in their bowling ranks to me and they've recently got nailed by Gloucestershire during the T20 and so I think Kent are a spot of value here. Kent picked up that incredible win over Gloucestershire during the T20 and they earned a solid draw with Hampshire last time out in this competition. A good win in their final T20 match restored a bit of pride and confidence and with their batting line up suddenly looking good they should go well here. Obviously they were shot out twice by Alan Richardson in the reverse fixture but I think they'll be more cautious of him here. James Tredwell is back for Kent in this game and with their experienced batsmen back too they look a big price in this match.

Re: County Championship 2013 Some joy in the last round of matches although the weather still denied me of two winners. Weather looks ok this week so hopefully we can get stuck in. One for Tuesday. 4pts Essex to beat Northants 10/11 Stan James Two sides who are going well in four day cricket this season. Clearly Northants have been going better and in the first half of the season it was hard to second guess which Essex were going to turn up but I think that's beyond them now. If their batting gets rolled over for a low score with Gautam Gambhir, Ravi Bopara and Ten Doeschate in it then there is no hope for it. It isn't just the batting which has been bolstered since Essex last played in this competition. They have added Monty Panesar with the ball and he has a real point to prove so we can expect him to give it everything on a wicket which should suit him. Northants come into this match off the high of winning the T20 on Saturday but it would only be human nature for them to struggle to get themselves up for this match in front of a few men and their dogs after the euphoria and highs of the atmosphere of what was one of the best finals days ever on Saturday. Furthermore there will be no Cameron White in this match, or David Willey and Kyle Coetzer is injured so the batting has a fragile look to it. Of course Northants can score runs down the order but they might need to. Trent Copeland returns for this game but Chelmsford at this time of year is usually for the pace off the ball and spin options and Northants aren't blessed with quality in that area so with that in mind and a flimsy look to their top order, so much so that Middlebrook will be opening, Essex look the call to bring the T20 champs down to earth with a bit of a bump.

Re: County Championship 2013 Need to hope that wicket at Colchester doesn't deteriorate and Essex can secure a draw barring something unlikely. One for Wednesday. 4pts Kent to beat Gloucestershire 6/5 BetVictor Kent haven't won many matches this season but they haven't lost many either. In fact the only match they've won was in the reverse fixture against Gloucestershire. That was an extraordinary run chase but since then they have pushed Hampshire hard and were all over Worcestershire before the weather intervened. Gloucestershire sit third in the table going into this match but I'm not sure that is a correct reflection of where they are. Their bowling attack looks very young and while they are talking up promotion I wouldn't be surprised if one eye at least is on Monday's winner takes all YB40 showdown with Somerset. Kent will be pleased to have James Tredwell in better form than the reverse fixture and Charlie Shreck returns for this match too having been rested for the YB40 matches. Jimmy Adams is very much a coach who will want a strong finish from his men this season to get a bit of momentum for next term and they can start that momentum with a win at a big price against a young Gloucestershire attack who've already been put to the sword by the Kent batsmen this season.

Re: County Championship 2013 Better on Wednesday. One for Thursday. 4pts Surrey to beat Durham 5/4 Coral Not sure I'm quite getting why Surrey are such big outsiders in this match. Of course if both sides were at full strength then I could understand it but they're not. Durham will be without Graham Onions with injury and Ben Stokes who is away with the England Lions. One of their replacements in Callum Thorp is also unavailable so there's a couple of youngsters in the Durham squad for this match. Surrey have no such problems. With Chris Tremlett not picked for England they are at full strength in this match but most importantly they give a debut to the mighty Hashim Amla. Obviously you want a good bowling attack to thrive in Durham and Surrey have that with Tremlett, Lewis, Dernbach (:lol) and Linley but you still have to put some runs up and Amla will help with that side of things massively. Durham's two game changers are absent here and if their attack struggles without them this could be a long week for the title challengers. Surrey can be buoyed by the disappointment of losing in the T20 final and can make sure their season isn't a total disaster by staying up beginning with a win here.

Re: County Championship 2013 That was majorly annoying last week. One wicket away from a small profit, instead becomes a significant loss :wall. Hoping for better this week. 5pts Essex to beat Gloucestershire 10/11 Stan James Gloucestershire have done really well in the Championship this season but they should have lost last week and we're reaching that part in the season where their resources become stretched to their full capacity and they just tail off from their top form. They'll need to be at top form this week because Essex come in looking very strong and they'll still feel they can pip Northants to promotion. The signings of Gautam Gambhir and Monty Panesar were signals of intent and while Ravi Bopara disappears this week Owais Shah comes back so with Gambhir, Shah, ten Doeschate and Foster all in good nick and capable players around them Essex look strong enough to feed on a young, inexperienced and dare I say it too heavily reliant on Gidman and Miles Gloucestershire attack. Gloucestershire look ok with the bat but there will be a disappointment that they didn't make the YB40 semi finals and there is the danger their season could fizzle out. Essex suddenly look a strong side with bat and ball and while I'm no fan of Foster's captaincy, I still expect even he can't fail to get this job done.

Re: County Championship 2013 Good start from Essex. One more for this week. 4pts Derbyshire to beat Surrey 13/8 Ladbrokes Derbyshire have won their last two matches in the Championship this season and have beaten good opponents in Sussex and Middlesex, two sides who are in a much better place than Surrey right now. Surrey haven't won a match in the Championship this term and go into this game off the back of an annihilation by Durham last time out. Changes had to be made and they have been but it is largely youngsters coming into the side which isn't ideal when the pressure is really on. Even Hashim Amla couldn't save Surrey last week. Surrey will be without Jade Dernbach this week while all the indications, certainly if Surrey's squad is anything to go by, is that we'll have a turning wicket in this match. That should suit Derbyshire so with the momentum they carry into this match I think they look a good bet to complete a hat trick of wins and near enough confirm Surrey's relegation.

Re: County Championship 2013 Another annoying week last week. Hitting this week hard. 6pts Nottinghamshire to beat Warwickshire 11/10 Ladbrokes Warwickshire have got all sorts of selection issues ahead of this game. They are having to play a wicket keeper on debut who has a broken finger and they are so short of batsmen due to international call ups and injuries that Chris Woakes could be batting as high as five with Laurie Evans and Ateeq Javid ahead of him. That's a very young and very light batting line up which even Nottinghamshire can't fail to exploit. Warwickshire will miss Boyd Rankin and Rikki Clarke with the ball too so this is going to be a tough ask for the visitors. Nottinghamshire go into this match at full strength apart from James Taylor and he should be able to return once he's done with England so with their semi final in the YB40 not until Monday they should get plenty of rest after this game which means they can give this one everything and pick up the win they need to 100% guarantee safety. 6pts Surrey to beat Middlesex 10/11 Paddy Power Surrey aren't playing great cricket at the minute but they are playing tougher cricket than Middlesex, who have flopped badly in the last two weeks, both against sides they should be beating. Here they miss Tim Murtagh and with Toby Roland-Jones out of the squad and Eoin Morgan now away with England I fear a bit for Middlesex here. Surrey have a good looking bowling attack and if they can just find some runs around Hashim Amla they will be tough to beat here. Surrey won't be missing anyone which could be important and with Middlesex's batting suddenly looking very flimsy then I'll take Surrey to prevail in the London derby. 4pts Worcestershire to beat Essex 11/8 Paddy Power Talking of flimsy batting line ups Essex's batting has a flimsy look about it this week. They will be without Gautam Gambhir, who has gone home almost as quickly as he arrived, while Ravi Bopara is away with England. Owais Shah has returned but Bopara and Gambhir leave big holes, holes that will be filled with youngsters looking at their squad list. Essex have had trouble bowling sides out in recent weeks. Worcestershire haven't had that problem and with their youngsters starting to deliver with the bat around Moeen Ali and their bowlers producing the good too the Royals look a big price to turn over Essex this week. 4pts Glamorgan to beat Kent 4/5 Bet365 I thought Glamorgan might rest a few players this week ahead of the YB40 semi final on Saturday but that isn't the case. Strangely enough they have even decided to bring Michael Hogan back into their side and he should make a big difference. With a batting line up which is in form, with Hogan doing some damage with the ball I expect Glamorgan to go well here. Kent will be without James Tredwell who is with England while Mitchell Claydon has been taken back by Durham and Matt Coles has now left for Hampshire. Kent have struggled to bowl sides out recently and I don't see that changing here so with Glamorgan's extra firepower with the ball around a solid batting line up I'll take the Welsh side to warm up for their big day on Saturday with a win here.

Re: County Championship 2013 Horrible week last week and annoyingly the rain denied the chance to get some of the horrendous loss back. Three weeks in a row I've been denied a winner on a final day because of rain :wall. Going to continue to try and dodge the showers this week as there are three I like. 4pts Middlesex to beat Nottinghamshire 4/5 Ladbrokes Amazingly when they bowled Warwickshire out twice last week it was the first time that Nottinghamshire had taken 20 wickets since the middle of May. That's not a good statistic and to be fair last week doesn't carry the weight it could have done because Warwickshire were beyond being down to the bare bones. Clearly this bowling attack is struggling to take 20 wickets and that isn't good. Middlesex bounced back from a couple of poor performances to thrash Surrey last week. You may argue that isn't hard and you may well have a point but with Chris Rogers back at the helm I expect Middlesex to be back to the strong performances of the first half of the summer. Tim Murtagh missed the Surrey game and he is back this week which is a big boost. He and James Harris are a good new ball pairing while there's enough in the rest of the attack to get through this Nottinghamshire batting line up. With Notts struggling to bowl sides out twice there's a lot of pressure on their batsmen and with eyes already likely to be on the YB40 final here in a couple of weeks Nottinghamshire's minds may not be fully in this game. There's an outside chance of Middlesex winning the title still and they can keep those tiny hopes alive with a win here. 5pts Yorkshire to beat Sussex 8/11 BetVictor Sussex's defeat at Durham last week was very much the defeat of a side who know their race is run this season. They were without Ed Joyce, Matt Machan, Chris Jordan and Luke Wright which wasn't helpful and the first two named will be back in this match, as will Matt Prior but I think Yorkshire will be too strong here. For much of the season Yorkshire's batting has looked light but it doesn't here. Phil Jaques is in good form as are Lyth and Lees while in Kane Williamson, Gary Ballance and Jonny Bairstow the Yorkshire engine room just screams big runs. Yorkshire's attack has been consistent all season and they know the title is very much in their sights. While Sussex have some batsmen back Chris Jordan will be a huge miss and there's a chance the other partner in crime Steve Magoffin could miss out here with a virus. That would be more than 100 wickets Sussex are missing from their attack and it is hard to see them winning without those two. I very much like the look of Yorkshire this week. 4pts Worcestershire to beat Hampshire 11/10 Paddy Power As a Hampshire fan it hurts to take on Jimmy Adams' men but I have to do it here. It also hurts to say this but Hampshire's red ball season has bordered on a disgrace really. There seems to be no plan and certainly no responsibility or accountability. Nobody has stood up and said 'I'll be counted' and that's a big concern. Taking 20 wickets has been a rarity for Hampshire and despite having just signed Raul Brathwaite to help deal with that suddenly he isn't playing this week. Matt Coles is but he will need help. Hampshire lack an enforcing seamer, an attack leader and a genuine top class spinner. That's only the root of their problems this week as two of their main men with the bat are missing too in Carberry and McKenzie. Carberry is with England while McKenzie is off to the Champions League and that's a lot of runs disappearing. The pressure on the youngsters coming in will be immense. In fact Hampshire could even use Wheater as a specialist batsman and it's probably best I don't get going on him! (anyone who follows me on twitter will know my views on him anyway :lol). Worcestershire aren't the perfect side but they don't lose to the poor sides in this division very often and with Thilan Samaraweera back this week I think they have the right balance in their batting and their bowling to see off Hampshire this week. The Hampshire batsmen won't enjoy facing Alan Richardson while the likes of Graeme Cessford are showing signs of being useful in backing him up. With Jimmy Adams now undecided about the captaincy going forward Hampshire have plenty of issues which need clearing up and while they are looking at them and addressing them the home side can take advantage and win this one.

Two for me this week. Hoping for a good end to the season. 4pts Somerset to beat Nottinghamshire 11/10 William Hill Technically these two sides can both be relegated but only one of them will go and that is only if Derbyshire win their game. Nottinghamshire have still only taken 20 wickets once since May and that's not a good sign. Broad and Swann were back for the YB40 final at the weekend but they don't play here so wickets are still a concern. Somerset have won two of their last three and nearly won the one they lost. They've shown a bit of fight in recent weeks and they have Overton and Buttler back for this game making them stronger in personnel. While Nottinghamshire did well to win the YB40 at the weekend it is Somerset with the momentum in four day cricket and at odds against they look tasty enough here. 5pts Hampshire to beat Essex 11/10 BetVictor Despite having a chance of getting promoted still, Essex coach Paul Grayson has gone down the strange route of resting three key players for this match. Ravi Bopara, David Masters and Reece Topley have been rested while Owais Shah has retired from four day cricket and Ryan ten Doeschate is away at the Champions League so this isn't the strongest Essex side. Hampshire have included Michael Carberry and are doing the league justice by playing their strongest side. Hampshire have looked good in the last couple of weeks with Matt Coles adding a new dimension to the bowling attack. This hasn't been a good four day season for Hampshire but they can end it on a high against an Essex side with a strange approach.

Re: County Championship 2013

Division Two top bats: 3pts ew A.Prince Top Division Two Batsman 10/1 Stan James (1/4 1-5) 1pt ew M.Ali Top Division Two Batsman 40/1 Coral (1/4 1-5) One man who has to be backed in this market is Ashwell Price. He was the fourth highest run scorer in Division One last season in a Lancashire side that had no substance to its batting at all. Prince actually scored more runs in Division One last season than anyone in Division Two did so against inferior bowlers he should fill his boots even more this summer. Another reason why Prince looks set for a good summer is Lancashire only play one match at Liverpool and that is made up with the fact they play Glamorgan on the road in Colwyn Bay rather than the sticky Cardiff wicket. Lancashire have more depth and quality to their batting to support Prince this year but Prince, who has no international commitments is the one to beat this season in my eyes. One man who should go well at a decent price is Moeen Ali at Worcestershire. With Vikram Solanki having moved on in the winter a lot more responsibility will be placed on the talented left hander’s shoulders. Ali has all the shots and should be too good for much of this division. Last time he played in Division Two he cleared 1000 runs and if he can do that again this season, and there’s no reason why he can’t as he’s a better player now than he was then, he can give us a run for our money at 40/1. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/county-championship-division-two-betting-ashwell-prince-looks-the-batsman-to-beat-in-second-division-20130410
A 10/1 place and a 40/1 winner in one post. Not bad!

Re: County Championship 2013

Yes, vintage picks. :) MdV you must be delighted with Durham's season, congratulations. :clap
Cheers. Absolutely delighted and also amazed. Will be a tough ask to retain the title next season mind, not convinced that we should be favourites.
