OMING... BY KEIR MACK total_gambler_14923_15.jpg PokerPlayer speaks with the man behind next year's record-breaking attempt When the International Stadiums Poker Tour (ISPT) was announced last year, with a €20 million prizepool and an anticipated field of 30,000 players, few believed it was true. And 12 months later you could be forgiven for thinking the ISPT had been spiked, but think again. This month, PokerPlayer spoke to those behind the world record attempt and discovered that May 31, 2013 might just go down in poker history! According to ISPT co-creator, Prosper Masquelier, the ISPT is the first project of its kind and offers a fresh take on tournament poker. Organisers have taken the unusual step of kicking off with 30,000 players battling it out online till 3,000 remain. Those players will then take their seat on the Wembley turf to decide who binks one of the biggest winner’s cheques in poker history. Sound too good to be true? PokerPlayer caught up with Masquelier to find out why the ISPT is ready to smash the record books. PokerPlayer: How did the ISPT become a reality? Prosper Masquelier: I saw there was a huge demand for poker and especially for massive poker events. I had the idea to set up the biggest poker tournament ever in a giant stadium and also wanted the biggest gathering of poker players in the world. So I decided, with Laurent Tapie, to create ISPT. We know that players usually start by playing online, wishing they could be at real tables. ISPT can offer both. We will be the first event in the world to mix online/offline in the same place. PP:Why Wembley as host stadium? PM:Wembley is a mythical stadium that has played host to some of the biggest events ever. We had to find a stadium as huge as our ambitions. It was natural to think of Wembley. Moreover, Wembley gave us all the guarantees to host such a technical event and welcome players. The management of Wembley was thrilled by ISPT from the start, and helped us design the event that could match all our requirements. PP: Do you really believe 30,000 players will enter? PM: We have contracts with gaming operators for more than 10,000 tickets in various countries. We hope to welcome more than 30,000 players on the day. PP: How will ISPT be structured? PM: We love poker, and are very passionate, so we will offer players the best structure. A press conference will be held in London later this year where we will unveil the structure and details on all the side events. PP: Can you explain how the initial online stage will work? PM: Players will be able to come and play with their own laptop. We think that will be more comfortable since players already have habits with their devices. PP: How can players qualify? PM: We are not a gaming operator, and we don’t pretend to be one. Our goal is for each poker room online and offline to be able to organise their own satellites, as the room wishes, to win ISPT tickets. Players also have the possibility to buy an ISPT ticket on our website at www.ispt.com.

Re: ISPT €20,000,000 Prizepool A lot of skepticism surrounding this on 2plus2 - http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/29/news-views-gossip/international-stadiums-poker-tour-wembley-may-31-june-6-2013-prize-pool-approx-20-000-000-a-1107003/ Key players in organising this seem to be the Tapies (Bernard and Laurent) who it transpired were trying to get Full Tilt for virtually nothing and to not repay most funds to players, and Partouche, who have just reneged on the guarantees they put up on the Partouche Poker Tour and indeed ended the tour completely. The guarantee for ISPT was initially €30m, but was then €20m and is now it seems something like that for the entire series, not the main event - if there really are any guarantees at all (the ISPT have removed all reference to guarantees on their web site). There seem too many unanswered questions, too many dodgy characters involved and too much ambition in this entire project - not to mention 20% rake!! (buy in is €480 + €120 I believe). Treat this series with extreme caution!

Re: ISPT €20,000,000 Prizepool The logistics to do what they plan would be beyond ridiculous. The cynic in me thinks their plan is to see how much interest there is in this - hence announcing it 18months+ before the due date - see how much money they can generate from people putting deposits down for buying in well in advance. Then they do some (guess)estimates and projections to see how much money they will actually generate/ whether it will be profitable at all. Then they will gradually scale down the size of the events to a point where they'll be attempting to make a boat load of money out of something which will eventually turn out to be a tournament that is not much different from all the other normal casino based tournaments around the world. They bank any profit from the Wembley event, declare it 'not in their best interests' to continue a project of that scale and disappear into the sunset late 2013. The players that played see it as a 'learning experience'. The ones who didn't say 'i told you so'. And the poker community in general scratches their heads and wonders what that was all about and everything goes back to normal in 2014.

Re: ISPT €20,000,000 Prizepool

hence announcing it 18months+ before the due date -
I'm not certain about this, but I think it was originally scheduled for this summer, with the intention rumored to be that they would play the games on the full tilt software after they had bought FTP - when that went on and on, and got delayed (and then cancelled), this led to the delay for ISPT. There was supposed to have been a big press conference for ISPT last week, but it never materialized.

Re: ISPT €20,000,000 Prizepool

30k power cables in Wembley Stadium for all the laptops' date=' good luck with all the extension cables. The whole thing is a disaster waiting to happen (or more likely not happen)[/quote'] Be better to do it in the Olympic stadium as there is wiring to every seat for the pixilators (or whatever those light pads were called).

Re: ISPT €20,000,000 Prizepool PokerNews 5 hours ago

In preparation for its inaugural event at Wembley Stadium this spring, the International Stadiums Poker Tour (ISPT) has introduced some changes to its groundbreaking format. Rather than running the entire tournament inside Wembley Stadium, Day 1 of the first-ever ISPT event will be held online between Feb. 3 and May 19. Up to 30,000 players will be able to compete in the €300 buy-in across several online poker rooms. The top 10 percent of the field at the end of each qualifier will advance to play on Day 2 of the event on the Wembley Stadium lawn. Players who make Day 2 will begin with the number of chips they had at the end of Day 1. ISPT has joined forces with number of online sites to run the Day 1 event. Players can play Day 1 of the tournament at Poker770.com, Poker770.es, Partouche.fr, MyPok.fr, Netbet.it, and Lock Poker. The new format allows for participants to play as many Day 1s as they desire. If the player advances through more than one Day 1 online, only the biggest chip stack from that player will be carried forward to Day 2. The lower chip stacks will be taken out of play and credit will be refunded to players. Players will also have the option of buying in directly for €3,000. Those players will begin Day 2 on June 1 with 50,000 chips, with blinds starting at 100/200 and levels lasting 60 minutes. Among the players expected to participate at Wembley include ISPT ambassadors Patrik Antonius, Michael Mizrachi, Sam Trickett, Liz Lieu, and David Benyamine. Days 2 through 6 will take place right at Wembley Stadium. The ISPT says that 70 percent of players coming to Wembley will be paid a portion of the prize pool. The original ISPT plans called for players to pony up €600 to play a shootout format using laptops from seats inside the stadium. Then, after the first round, the remaining players would move to real tables on the Wembley lawn. Tournament organizers have altered the structure based on the feedback from players. “We listened to their constructive comments and advice to come up with a convenient yet innovative format," said ISPT president Laurent Tapie. "Having the possibility to play the main event from home, at an affordable buy-in was the choice of reason.” While there isn't a guaranteed prize pool set for the Main Event, Tapie is "very confident" that the prize pool will exceed €10 million and that the new tournament format will be a "success for the players." Here's another look at the key figures for the inaugural ISPT Main Event at Wembley Stadium:

  • Days 1A though Day 1F will be played online from Feb. 3 through May 19 on ISPT's partner poker rooms
  • Online buy-in: €300 (5,000 starting chips)
  • Participants can participate in as many Day 1s as they wish
  • Players will keep their remaining online stack for Day 2
  • Live buy-in: €3,000 (50,000 starting chips)
  • 70 percent of players going to Wembley will be paid out
  • 10 side events will be held in Wembley Stadium

Said ISPT CEO Prosper Masquelier, “Our goal is to please the players from all around the world, said. "We listened to their constructive comments and advice to come up with a convenient yet innovative format. Having the possibility to play the main event from home, at an affordable buy-in was the choice of reason. "Mixing the online and live part in the same tournament was the choice of innovation. Letting poker fans to play on the pitch of Wembley, like football stars, was the choice of passion. Re: ISPT €20,000,000 Prizepool surely its if people are seriously interested in playing this and can afford it then its worth stumping up the 3k rather than try and qualify. With 70% being paid out the odds would be in your favour. There will be players coming with less that 50k in chips, blinds will still be low. Whose going then?

Surely it will depend on whether the payout is based on the original €300 buy-in or the €3000 direct buy-in to the latter stages?
