As in previous years, we'll have 2 golf threads running, one for each tour. We'll also run separate threads for the Majors, as well as the PL Golf Comp (register now). We're back up & running on Thursday for the 1st event of the European Tour:ok

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Africa Open I suck at the European Tour, but i am going to give it a rattle in 2012, although at minimum stakes, as i know nothing about it and prefer the PGA.. But its nice to be watching tv at 7 or 8am following your golfer and ill try improve on this tour by experiences, watching more of it, and following Russ and other guys here! *Martin Maritz - 1 Point e/w @ 200/1 VC* There is one piece of form that sticks out to me here that if he reproduced it, he would be no 200/1 shot. He was 12th in the South Africa Open in 2010, where Ernie Els won. For the Africa Open you would have to back an African and Maritz is a South African, so he should know the place fairly well. He had 7 tournaments last year and made the cut in 5 of them. I will have a stab at him! *Sam Walker - 1 Point e/w @ 150/1 Skybet* This 6ft 12inch giant of an Englishman might have a squeak this weekend. He has had 2 Challenge Tour wins and is 16th on the challenge tour and he seems to be in the Top 20 very regularly on that tour so he may have a squeak in this tournament at the weekend. He was 23rd on the european tour last time out which wasnt all that bad. Both 1/4 odds 5 places! Good Luck

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Africa Open Just lost a massive write up:eyes However, I'll try again and say that I'm looking at staking between 10-15pts per event this year, with the opener using up the maximum as I'll focus on homegrown talent. J.Van Zyl to win Africa Open, 2.5pts EW @ 16/1 Skybet (1/4 odds 1-5) Trying to break into World's elite, just sat outside top 100, and looking for maiden victory on European Tour. 4 Top 4's last year, and 9 Top 25's from his last 10 events show his confidence should be high. 2 Top 4's from the 5 SA events he played on the European Tour, including a 4th place here. Says he's looking forward to this week and in a weak field, should go very close. J.Kruger to win Africa Open, 2.5pts EW @ 20/1 Skybet (1/4 odds 1-5) Similar to Van Zyl, Jbe Kruger is a golfer on the up. His game is set up perfectly for this course with accuracy very important here. 5 Top 10's on the Tour last season with 3 of those coming in the 6 SA events he played. Has the appropriate course form too with finishes of 3rd & 8th in the last 2 years. Should be bang there come Sunday. B.Grace to win Africa Open, 2pts EW @ 35/1 Bet365 (1/4 odds 1-5) The 3rd of my 4 strong team comes in the shape of the ultra consistent Branden Grace. 4 Top 25's in the 5 SA events he played on the Tour, 5 more Top 10's on the Challenge Tour and a 7th place finish on the Sunshine Tour (where only he & Aiken finished top 7 without winning an event). Interestingly on the ST, he finished top 14 in 8 of his 9 starts, a remarkably consistent record. A talented, young player who should only get better, I'll take him to build on last season's exploits at a course where he has a pair of 8th place finishes in the last 2 years. C.Swanepoel to win Africa Open, 0.5pts EW @ 400/1 Betfred (1/4 odds 1-5) Stupid bet time, but with reason. Firstly, he's a 2011 winner on the Sunshine Tour proving he can stick it out when in front but the main reason for the bet is his 4th place finish 2 years back where he finished 68-68-68 to record an excellent 17 under total. If he can hit the greens, he will hold every chance as generally his putting is pretty good. Might be throwing away 1pt but odds should be half what they are.

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Africa Open How the heck did I get out of this event only losing 2.5pts?:unsure An absolute terrible Day 1 saw 3 of the 4 in the bottom 10 and the other not far above that. At that point, I was counting on a full 15pt loss. However, both Branden Grace and Jaco Van Zyl played some storming golf on the last 3 day with Van Zyl securing a 4th place finish. That gives me a 12.5pt return and, in fairness, I'll settle for that. What I am pleased about is the call on SA players. Continuing their dominance, they occupied the top 4 positions.

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Africa Open Bets 2 Wins 0 Places 0 Unplaced 2 Loss 4 Points *Jamie Elson - 1 Point e/w @ 200/1 Betfred* Played his best golf for some time last week when he scored 10 under in the Africa Open. May not be a great score in the scheme of things when you see the winners score, but it shows a marked improvement in his game imo. He won on the challenge tour, so at least he knows how to win. He scrambled very well last weekend and ill have a go at him! *Benn Barham - 1 Point e/w @ 250/1 Skybet* Sticking with another Englishman here. Has 2 challenge tour wins to his name and he played exceptionally well last weekend in the Africa Open, finishing with a score of 15 under, so i think he is overpriced here for sure. That performance was a HUGE improvement on his previous form, which was +7, +9, +4 and +8 without even making a cut, so his game has improved and is worth a go at the price. Good luck guys! :hope

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Joburg Open I'm going to stick my neck out and post 2 longshots for the Joburg that I think are cracking value: Adilson Da Silva - 150/1 - 0.5pt EW (1-5,1/4) - Bet365 This is a guy who knows how to win and is Mr.Consistent. He has over 35 tournament wins on various tours including 9 on the Sunshine Tour and Has the record for most consecutive cuts made on the Sunshine tour, 43 in a row! He had 2 of those victories last year including September, so we aren't talking about a 'Has-been'. He's in good current form too having finished T18th last week in the Africa Open. He is Brazilian but Lives in South Africa so will feel at 'home' on these courses especially with his Sunshine Tour experience. 150/1 just seems too big, I doubt he'll have the quality to win it but he can close tournaments out so if he can be in the thick of it come Sunday, there is every chance of a place! Peter Karmis - 200/1 - 0.5pts EW (1-5,1/4) - Betfred Another price that looks too big to me. A definite longshot again but worth a little dabble. So many players in the lime light at the moment have progressed through the Sunshine tour that you just don't know who will be next. I'd rather have a little go now predicting when they will break through rather than waiting for them to do it and getting a tenth of the odds! Karmis has 3 tournament wins to his name, 1 on the Asian Tour (Another flourishing tour producing stars of the future) and 2 on the Sunshine Tour. Incidentally he beat Jbe Kruger to the Singapore Classic on the Asian Tour which is good pedigree in itself. RussP and others have mentioned how homegrown talent do well in these co-sanctioned events and off the back of his T10th last week in the Africa Open i'm happy to make the play this week. Good Luck all :hope

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Joburg Open Going with 3 here. G.Mulroy to win Joburg Open, 2.5pts EW @ 20/1 Ladbrokes (1/4 odds 1-5) I'm sticking with the SA theme and going for in form Garth Mulroy this week. Finished 34th last week but may just have needed that on his first start for over 6 weeks and is expected to finish an awful lot closer this week. His form prior to the break reads 1-9, both played in SA. He also finished 2nd here last year which proves the courses hold no worries for him and another 2nd here 3 years ago back up his claims as a course specialist. A liking for this event coupled with a homegrown, in form player make a cracking bet and I'm happy for Garth to be my main bet this week. B.Wiesberger to be Top Continental Euro at Joburg Open, 2.5pts EW @ 14/1 Stan James (1/4 odds 1-4) B.Wiesberger to win Joburg Open, 1pt EW @ 80/1 Betfred (1/4 odds 1-5) I like the chances of the young Austrian. Returns to SA, the scene of his recent 2nd at the SA Open, the first time he's shown much in this neck of the woods but will be buoyed by that performance and will fancy his chances here. Has 3 top 5 finishes to his name, from his last 12 European Tour events so is certainly a player swinging the club well. Slightly speculative selection outright but is a young player on the up and, in a very weak Euro market, looks a cracking shot. His distance off the tee, on this long course, could be key and if he keeps it straight, should set up plenty of birdie opportunities. A good value bet. J.Kruger to win Joburg Open, 1.5pts EW @ 50/1 William Hill (1/4 odds 1-5) I backed Jbe last week and he went & missed the bloody cut. However, there's plenty of reason to back him again this week. He's pretty accurate off the tee which could pay dividends here, whilst his form in his home country remains solid despite his effort last week. What we should remember from last week was that he spoilt his chance on Day 1 with a +2 total of 75 putting him in the bottom 10. He somewhat improved on Day 2 with an excellent -6 total of 67 to narrowly miss the cut. That's not the performance of someone out of form and he'll come here fresher than those that played over the weekend. 2.5 times the price of last week in a similar strength field, he represents great EW value.

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Joburg Open

Great first round from Elson, 8 under. Went from 400 to 25 on Betfair today, happy with my bet at 200/1, getting a run for my money anyways.
Good shout mate, I'll take -7 from Karmis as well! I tried to do him 1st rnd leader ew also but as its over 2 courses nobody had odds! Here's hoping at least 1 (let's be greedy, BOTH!) are in contention come Sunday!

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Joburg Open

Great call Aidy, though very unlucky. Two 63's and he still fall's 1 shot shy. At least you had him e/w, but still, that must sting! Hope you are doing ok too Russ. There's nothing worse than backing a guy at odds and having him win the next week instead.
To be honest im not feeling any sting Crouch, he looked dead and buried after rounds 2 and 3, absolutely delighted with the place mate.

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Joburg Open

You're obviously far less greedy than I am! P.S. I don't think you can claim to suck at Euro tour anymore :p
I still suck Crouch, it was 1 lucky place, unfortunately i bet on the ET with minimum stakes (10 euro per point), and bet much more on the PGA but i have had a horrific start to the PGA, so im not up much money even with this place.

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Joburg Open Awesome stuff Aidy, really pleased for you with Elson. Lovely bit of profit and a fantastic start to the season.

....but not be outdone:lol:lol Wiesberger, an easy winner of this market by 4 shots, at a tasty 14/1, bringing in returns of 48.75pts:ok That puts me +31.25pts after the first 2 events. Hit the crossbar a little bit though this weekend with me backing Branden Grace in the wrong week and both Wiesberger & Kruger missing out on a place payout by just 1 shot:wall. Still can't be too disappointed and plenty to build on.

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Joburg Open Hats off to Russ P. Great tip and more to the point well researched. A fine example of looking in various markets and trying to find where the layers have taken their eye of the ball. Bookies are not perfect by any means, and as Russ has proved here, they can be caught out if you put the work in. Wiesberger by four lenghts!@ 14/1.......Salutie:notworthy

Re: Golf: European Tour 2012 - Joburg Open Dam it, did big write-ups and then it failed to load up when i tried to submit.. Will keep it brief. *Louis Oosthuizen - 4 Points WIN @ 11/2 VC* Won the Africa Open a couple of weeks ago scoring -27, has been inside the Top 10 on his last 6 events scoring a total of -93, incredible golf. Is by far the best current player in this field in my opinion and although he is favourite i still think he is value at 11/2, i was expecting 3/1 or 7/2. Is a major winner and if he brings his game, he will probably win in this small field. *Pablo Larrazabal - 2 Points e/w @ 40/1 Ladbrokes - 1/4 odds 4 places* Last tournament was in December, but played very well that weekend finishing 10th in Dubai. Is very hit and miss but he does have 2 european tour wins to his name and he is still relatively young. He has improved on scoring average, driving distance and accuracy and GIR year on year if you look at the stats, and at the price ill have an e/w bet on him. Best of luck guys :ok
