Mr Intensity Posted January 9, 2005 Share Posted January 9, 2005 First play of the week: BLAKE v Gonzalez @ 2.05 WillHill 2pts H2H: 3-0 Blake 63 64 – Paris (2003) Blake 67 64 64 – Paris (2002) Blake 46 63 63 – Rome (2002) I was very impressed with what I saw of Blake in the Hopman Cup. He looks to have put his problems of 2004 behind him and I believe he will have a great 2005. He is serving well and is very explosive from the back of the court. He likes the conditions and court used in this part of the season, last year he reached the 4th round of the Australian Open easily before losing in 4 tights sets to Safin. As I have mentioned the match practice of the Hopman Cup will have him sharp and match ready for this encounter. For Gonzalez this is the first match of the season. I don’t feel he will be in great shape, we have seen for the last two years that he does not enjoy this part of the season. Last year he lost in the fist round here and at the Aus Open, and in 2003 he reached the 2nd round here and 2nd round of the Aus Open. He also finished last year on a real downer; he didn’t win a match after the Olympics in the summer. I can’t see him having much confidence coming into this match and I can’t see him being able to stay with Blake at the back of the court. He won the doubles in Chennai and so could be a bit tired for the singles here (he is really old). Also his singles play wasn't great going out in the second round. Mello has just won a challenger in Brazil and should be full of confidence. He also finished last year playing well, and won his first ATP tournament in Delray Beach beating Fish, Ancic and Spadea on the way. Alright, he did beat Calleri 7-6, 7-5 in Auckland back in 2003, but I guess it's fair to say Calleri has come a long way since then. Calleri had a W-L record of 6-10 on hardcourts for 2003, bettered that to 11-8 last year including making the final of a few notable tour events. Ginepri, on the other hand, looks nothing like the player who still commands an edge over Calleri like he did 2 years ago. 8 pts Andreev to beat Costa (1.83 William Hill) Costa has overperformed last week and that really cannot be construed as a true measurement of his place on the hardcourts. While Andreev isn't exactly a world beater on hardcourts himself, I can certainly see him having the stamina to see this one out - comfortably. HORNA v Rochus @ 2.25 Bet365 2pts We all saw how well Rochus did last week in reaching the semis in Adelaide. However, I feel the marathon quarter final against Kiefer could hurt this week. At 165cm his legs have to work much harder to cover the court and it tends to take him longer to recover. I forsee a subpar performance agaist Horna. Horna is more of a clay courter however he did show some good stuff on the hard last year. He started the year very badly, losing all 3 of his matches in the Australasian season. However, defeats to Dent and Ginepri are acceptable, the only poor result was a straight sets defeat to Kohlschreiber. But I feel we can put this poor run down to him getting married in late 2003 which would obviously have affected his preperations for the start of the season. I prefer to look at his hard court form in the latter part of the season; starting in Toronto he went 11/7 on hard including the final in Long Island and quarters in TMS Madrid. Also, the 7 guys who beat him were pretty decent; T Johansson, Soderling, Grosjean, Hewitt, Spadea, Schuettler and Safin! This will be a baseline battle and I just feel that Horna serves quite a bit better and will be able to use his forehand to move Rochus around and dominate the points. Last year he won the tournaments in Adelaide and Auckland (beating Nadal in the final). The year he helped win the Hopman Cup for Slovakia winning all of his singles matches without dropping a set. Now he has come to Auckland to defend his title. Nadal was beaten in last years final by Hrbaty and I have heard people citing revenge when tipping Nadal for this match. I don't see this as a factor at all, Nadal is young and would have enjoyed being in the final. Nadal won two matches last week (vs Youzhny and Verdasco) before going out in 3 sets to Ljubicic. I feel this loss shows Nadal's inability to take control over a big hitter and that his game will still take time to mature. Johansson has been in a similarly rich vein of form having won the season opening tourney last week and so long as he keep that up, he should have enough to take out Mirnyi. I think Llodra has done better than expected really and I honestly though Malisse bottled it against him earlier today, allowing him to break his serve as he was chasing a 3-4 deficit in the final set. Up against Lopez who is a far more experience and successful hardcourt player, Llodra could really be living on borrowed time here. :eek 8 pts Hrbaty-Gonzalez-Johansson (2.34) Hrbaty will breeze past Acasuso. I agree Hewitt should win but there’s an interesting little set betting price available in my view. Hewitt’s 2-0 sets being priced far too low in my book. I’ve laid Hewitt’s 2-0 sets versus Arnaud Clement at 1.35. The Frenchman seems to be hitting a bit of form in Sydney going easily through a relatively tough set of qualifiers. He has in 5 meetings always managed to take a set of Hewitt (despite losing all matches) including one last week in Adelaide where he had Hewitt on the ropes in the first set. Clement made the final of the Oz Open in 2001 but has had a lean 2004. Hewitt has started 2005 slowly exiting in Adelaide to Taylor Dent a player whom he had previously dominated. He has also had well documented personal problems with his wedding to Kim Clisters collapseing and him being linked to a well known Australian soap actress so his mind might be elsewhere at the moment . While Minar has a good record in challengers, he rarely converts it into success in ATP events. he often exits as early as in the first round and is 0-3 on hard (as of last year, now a bit better after he's got that far). Generally lacks experience. Pavel, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish, seasoned player and I suspect he needed just to get into the right pace when he lost in the first last week. This week looks different and I see no reason why he shouldn't continue on a high where he finished last year. No H2Hs so far. The very same odds @ Pinnacle.
