Re: Golf: US Masters outright betting Sport Golf Event US MASTERS Selection RORY McILROY (Each-way) Strength 2/10 Date 07/04/2011 Bookmaker/Price Totesport @ 31.00 Reasoning The 21yo will be targeting the majors as his main priority this year the girlfriend even got dumped at christmas so there is one thing on lads mind win a major thats my take on it any way. Has been at the course since the 23rd March and is raring to go and i'm adamant and firmly believe he will win a major or more this year and have backed him e/w in all four with PP. Best finish in this was 20th in 09 and i think with his hunger he will smash that and is a major e/w chance. C'mon the young ulster man lets be having you that green jacket will suit you nicely my son.

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 After much blood, sweat and tears...I've come up with 10 key points for the winner of the US Masters. Basically, it's everything Zach Johnson isn't!! 1) Made the cut in last years Masters. Every winner since 1980 has played in the previous Masters, and the only player to win having missed the cut was Tiger Woods in 1997. 2) Won on US soil in the PGA Tour. The last player to make the Masters their first win the US was Bernhard Langer in 1985. 3) Had a top 10 this year. 18 of the last 20 winners had already hit the top 10 this year. 4) Have 5 or more professional wins. In the last 30 years, only Tiger Woods in 1997 and Zach Johnson in 2007 have won the Masters having won less than 5 tournaments on the major tours (includes PGA, European, Asian in my eyes!). 5) Has finished in the top 10 at a major previously. In the last 40 years, only Tiger Woods in 1997 and Zach Johnson in 2007 (them again!) have not had a top 10 in a major before winning here. 6) Must have won in the last 2 years (since beginning of 09 season). 23 of the last 24 winners abide by this rule; naturally Zach Johnson hadnt won in 3 years and one week! 7) Finished in the top 25 in a major last year. 27 of last 28 winners had finished in the top 25 of a major last year...Zach Johnson again chiming in with a 32nd the year before his win! 8) No win in the week before the Masters. In the last 50 years, only Sandy Lyle (1988) and Phil Mickelson (2006) have managed to win the Masters one week after another tournament win. Ironically, this stat rules out Phil again! 9) Ranked in the top 50 in the world. Since the rankings began in 1986, only 2 winners have been ranked outside the top 50. Zach Johnson and Angel Cabrera. Again, like above with Phil, somewhat ironically this is the only factor that rules out Cabrera this year! 10) No Aussies! Hard as he tried, Greg Norman couldnt break the course. No Aussie has finished in the top 5 since 2005 when Pampling and Hensby finished 8 shots off the lead. OK, so while I'm going to regret leaving out Mickelson and Cabrera (they'll battle out a playoff on sunday no doubt!) as they break rules they've broken before...the 10 factors above leaves me with 5 top quality players. Tiger Woods @ 13 ew BoyleSports Top 6 1) Finished 4th last year 2) 71 PGA Tour wins 3) Top 10 at Doral 4) As mentioned above, a few more than 5 professional wins! 5) 14 major wins, and at least one top 10 in a major every year since his first in 1997. 6) Won in 2009 7) Two top 10s last year in majors 8) Didn't play last week. 9) World No.7 10) American. YE Yang @ 96 ew PP 6 Places 1) 8th last year 2) Two wins in the US including the USPGA 3) 5th in Match Play and 2nd in the Honda Classic 4) 5 wins on the major tours 5) Major win and a top 10 here last year 6) Won the USPGA in last 2009. 7) Top 10 here last year. 8) MC last week 9) World No.33 10) South Korean Ian Poulter @ 51 ew PP 6 Places 1) 10th last year 2) Won the Match Play last year 3) 6th in the Tournament of Champions 4) 10 wins on the European Tour 5) 3 top 10s in majors including a runner up at the Open. 6) Won 3 tournaments in the last 18 months. 7) Top 10 here last year 8) Didn't play last week 9) World No.16 10) English Steve Stricker @ 46 ew PP 6 Places 1) 30th last year 2) First PGA Tour win way back in 1996. 3) 3 top 10s this year, including last week 4) 9 PGA Tour wins. 5) 9 top 10s in majors, and two here. 6) Won 5 tournaments since May 2009. 7) 18th in the USPGA last year. 8) 4th last week 9) World No.8 10) American Retief Goosen @ 71 ew BoyleSports 6 Places 1) 38th last year 2) First win on US soil was the US Open in 2001. 3) 3rd in Abu Dhabi early in the year. 4) 44 professional wins 5) 2 major wins and 15 top 10s in majors. 6) Sneaks in with his win in the 2009 Transitions Championships. 7) 6th in US Open last year. 8) T60 last week 9) World No.19 10) South African I love the Masters...lets hope I still love it at the end of the week!! GL :ok

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 Great work Hornet :ok I've taken them all (bar Woods), but all on Betfair, so watch them come T6 now :lol (With Woods winning of course!) Going to mostly just run with your picks this week -- you clearly know what your doing better than I do. Have taken a couple of players whose course form impressed me though - Fred Couples @ 230 and Angel Cabrera @ 160 (Both Betfair). Will do write ups later whilst I wait for Striker to add his tips for me to follow ;)

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 Sounds good CP. Hopefully Yang can win his second major followed by the Goose, Stricker and Poults! Odds on that happening?! :eek I'm not happy taking Woods (again) but the trends say he fits and his odds are actually not too prohibitive (although taking 12s on a guy who hasnt won in 16 months is still a bit bit mad!). As mentioned, I like Cabrera as a pick as he's only discounted on his ranking...a factor that came into play when he won, but he still managed to win so at those odds definitely worth a look! I do have a few antepost bets which I've put on over the past few months but I'll post them up later. :hope

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 I'm going for Lee Westwood to finish in Top 5 this week. 4.50 @ Skybet Westwood has been very good in majors over past two years and seems to bring his best golf to the most important tournaments. He's recorded Top 3 finish in every major and finished a runner-up to Phil Mickelson in Augusta last year. He was leading going into the final day but could not hang on. That pretty much sums up his play - good over three rounds but can't finish the job. I reckon he'll come close again this year, maybe won't win it but Top 5 finish should be achievable.

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 A pretty easy first round tip for me...as I play it every year he's in the Masters! Justin Rose First Round Leader @ 34 ew Bet365 Justin Rose has played the Masters 5 times, his first round finishes have been...12-1-1-1-70. Incredible figures. He didnt play here last year so will be raring to go again right from the word go. Has been playing well this year with two top 5s in recent weeks so no worries about current form. GL :ok

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 I have taken 100/1 with William Hill for Trevor Immelman. Think this is a massive price considering how well he plays here. Won it in 2008 and then followed that up with a 20th and a 14th last year. He also finished 5th in 2005. He was playing through the pain during the last couple of years and now with that problem sorted out I think he can do very well this week. He clearly loves this course and probably plays his best golf here. Ridiculous price and hopefully he can deliver the goods :hope Also I don't see how Phil Mickelson can be left out of anyones bets. His record here is unbelievable and he comes into this on the back of a win. Price is a bit skinny but I will also be backing him. Trevor Immelman 100/1 e/w Phil Mickelson 13/2 win

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011

Stan James are refunding the win part of all losing outrights on bets placed pre tournament if Mickelson or Woods wins. With Mickelson looking good it could be an offer to keep on the right side of.
Just to muddy the water a bit more... Not only have you got best odds to look for and refund specials but Boyles and Paddy are paying EW on 6 places rather than the rests 5.... It's a hard life being a punter :tongue2

Loving the write ups Hornet, much appreciated. May i ask how you go about compiling this info, what sources do you use? Bit of a novice myself and fancy Stricker but don't whether to take 45/1 ew 6 places with Paddy Power or take 55s on betfair but then the place element of the bet isn't as good!

Personally I think you'd make more money on a place payout than on trading if he is in contention... just my view

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 Great stuff hornet. I think mickelsons record here means you can't leave him out though. Plus the fact he is one player that has won the week before and then won the masters. I also quite like the look of y e yang and will back him as well

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 Cheers Paddy. Basically, I've taken 6 places because it's the Masters and anything can happen. Plus, last year I had Freddie Couples @ 125s to 5 places and he came outright 6th which annoyed me! In terms of the info it's just grunt work...using the PGA Website a lot, love a bit of wikipedia too (their major results boxes has been a great help!). Then it's also just about understanding what you're looking to do on the course (golf365 has great course writeups); so yeah, sadly it's not all that glamorous! :ok

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 Gday players Something about The Masters which makes it so different. Maybe its just the course and the flowers...maybe its just THE best Tournament of the Golf year. Anyway, my thoughts, for what they're worth... Mikelson, Mahan and McIlroy for the win... Allenby @ 9/1 with 8.5 strokes start on the Sportsbet Handicap market (only 15 players in this field) Laying Tiger Woods with every cent I can get my hands on... is ten shots off the pace atm and going no-where Cheers all :dude

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 I have a golf system where i back the player or players who shot the best final round score the previous year. That is Nick Watney and Anthony Kim. Watney has been in tremendous form this year and is a threat to all, the price is a tad skinny @ 18/1 but worth an e/w nonetheless.. Anthony Kim finished 3rd in this last year and shot a cracking 65 in the final round, another man who on his day is a joy to watch.. Nick Watney - E/W @ 18/1 - Paddypower Anthony Kim - E/W @ 40/1 - Paddypower Powers paying 6 places... Good Luck

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 I'm not a huge golf fan but backing Phil Mickelson to beat Tiger Woods over the four rounds of the US Masters is @ 1.66 on Bet 365. Surely this represents some sort as value, as Woods has been awful since his return and Mickelson is considered in form and a possible winner. Any opinions?

My post was about forum rules and respecting the time taken by others to post with reasoning by at least giving us more than a few names off the top of your head.... your response is just pathetic... I love a bit of sarcasm but i'd've thought in your many years you might have learnt a bit of class?
If your post was about forum rules, why didnt you just refer to the forum rules in a courteous manner, instead of advising all and sundry that "its annoying" You opened the door by your sancrimonious, self-opinionated response and now you're whining because of my sarcasm...gimme a break... I wont post again in this domain as I dont want to upset children of your age...

:rollin If me asking for you to put some reasoning makes me an upset child, so be it. Your informative posts will be sorely missed.

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011

They're not thoughts... they are a list of names!! Pointless without reasoning?? I probably should leave this to the Mods... but its annoying... some brilliant write ups that people have put a lot of time into... then this... just you telling us where your moneys gone?
Well said mate. Mr Magoo, we don't ask for essays and stuff but there must've been a reason why you've laid your money down so share it with us as per the forum rules. Only has to be a few lines. Others can then choose whether or not to follow based on your thoughts :ok.

Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 Everyone loves the Masters, and with Sky taking over coverage this year I am assuming that means more hours of viewing pleasure. In theory this should be the easiest Major to pick the winner - as its played on the same course each year, its a restricted field of less than 100 runners, of which at least 10 percent are made up of amateurs and has-been ex-champs (no disrespect intended), as Hornet has pointed out in his excellent post, there are a number of rules that (most) winners obey in order to get their hands on the Green Jacket. Of them I am a bigger believer in course form. This website is pretty good for year on year comparisons: http://www.golfobserver.com/golfstats.php?c=283 I am often guilty of applying a scatter gun approach to the Majors and having more bets than I should, but I am going for just one bet this year: Nick Watney bt Martin Kaymer @ 4/5 (Totesport) Watney is a quality player and scores highly when applying the 'Hornet Criteria'. Kaymer is undoubtedly a great player, and also ticks many of the boxes, but 3 missed cuts at Augusta in the last three years, opposed to 3 top-20 finishes for the American makes this appear to be a mismatch in my view

I am a fan of Nick Watney to win this tournament, i have him backed... However....... Kaymer has improved dramatically in the past year, i do not think you have taken this into account. His accuracy and safe-shot type of play is what is needed at this course and although i think Watney has a great chance of winning this tournament, i certainly dont think it is a mismatch, it is impossible to rule Kaymer out
