Tennis - 21 March - April 4

Recommended Posts

Miami takes precedence for the men over the next two weeks, while the ladies also head to Florida. It's another ATP 100 series/WTA premier event, so most of the top players will be in attendance. Usual swathe of Challenger events to get your teeth into. Good luck :ok

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 some qualies picks Sweeting (vs Cabal) (u19.5) @ 1.8 (bet365) - stake 5/10 Sweeting should easily do this. Just a class above Cabal on this kind of surface. Southamerican just came to pick up some easy participation cash. Although he won against Sela last week, doubt he can do anything to Sweeting here. Particulary Cabal being a clay specialist. Domijan (vs Reister) (+3.5) @ 1.85 (nordicbet) - stake 3/10 Reister in god awful form. Losing to players like Gregorc and Elias ain't getting you back in top 100. Domijan is a young American trying to make his way to pro circuit. Played some decent tennis in recent Dallas challenger, feel somehow he can push Reister here in 3 sets, if not grab a win for himself. Przysiezny (vs Massu) @ 1.5 (nordicbet) - stake 5/10 Przysiezny (vs Massu) (-3) @ 1.85 (nordicbet) - stake 3/10 Massu received a WC for qualies, but Chilean veteran should have no chance here if polish Federer shows up and not tries to make money for his east european friends. Massu recently has troubles even on his best surface - clay. Michal had some points to defend in recent weeks, but retired 4 weeks ago with achilles tendon. Hopefully he should be fully fit now and will try to make MD draw here. On this kind of surface he should beat Massu easily.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Soeda (vs Baker) @ 1.4 (nordicbet) - stake 8/10 Soeda (vs Baker) 2:0 @ 1.9 (nordicbet) - stake 5/10 Soeda (vs Baker) (-3.5) @ 1.8 (nordicbet) - stake 5/10 Hope Soeda will to it this week. He should finally have his head in the right place after all that horror in Japan. Doubt Baker (no 404) can do him some serious damage here, especially if Soeda is in his momentum. Baker even lost in Davis Cup on indoor hard to one of morrocan clay mugs :fp Only question here for me in Soedas mental state. If he's up to it Baker has no chance. Careful when placing your stake, I'm willing to play him high, because i'm expecting him to win here comfortably and gain some momentum.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Hi guys, 2 picks for the Miami tournament: ATP QUALIFIERS: RUSSELL TO DEFEAT MATOSEVIC @1.57 pinnaclesports WTA: OUDIN TO DEFEAT GOERGES @2.18 betfair Russell is in a good form, he has solid baseline game and an OK serve. Matosevic is a good all-around player but Russell is much better on return of serve and in baseline rallies. Goerges is a powerful player with big shots and strong serve but Oudin has great return of serve and good counter-punching skills.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 As if one ten-day orgy of Masters tennis wasn't enough in a month, the ATP (and the WTA) have concocted the calendar to give us Miami hot on the heels of Indian Wells. Let the fun begin ... I've been absent from the outrights market for a while, but I've decided to strike in this one. All the big boys are here, but I'm going to take the one man who comes here in wretched form. ANDY MURRAY (16/1 with Betfred each way (1/2, 1, 2) - 2pts) may not make much sense reading the form guide, but I feel if there's one place he'll get back on track, it's Miami. He won the tournament two years ago and owns a house here - a lot of his off-season work is spent pounding the gym down here in Florida. Conditions seem to suit him and he comes here fresh - almost too fresh - having been dumped out of Indian Wells so early by Donald Young. I actually think his draw is decent because in Victor Hanescu, a probable R2 opponent, he faces a man in the same sort of form dip. Then it's probably big John Isner. I think Murray needs to play someone like Isner, a guy he has to focus against, because let's face it, Andy's problems are mostly mental. Concentration dips, attitude problems, etc. But against someone like Isner, he normally screws the nut. Same sort of scenario for Fernando Verdasco, who he can take care off. Then it's Novak Djokovic. Form-wise, Nole should win, but I think Djokovic's goose will be cooked here. The man has just won Indian Wells and is undefeated this year, but he suffers from fatigue more than most and I think against Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, he showed signs of that. Murray will be in a better place after a few wins and could deliver the KO blow in the quarters. The other side of his draw (bottom half) doesn't concern me too much. Big Robin Soderling comes here after a toe injury and flu, and even then, I don't think he can live with Murray at his best outdoors. David Ferrer is in the same boat, and if it's Juan Martin Del Potro in the semis, and it could be, then Andy will be well-up for it, considering he hates the Argentine more than the English ;) In the final, I'd expect him to get either Federer or Nadal, but in Masters event, Murray has shown neither fazes him. I'm banking on Murray finding form, and Djokovic tiring, but both are probable. Murray has spoken how he feels really good this week, how he's looking forward to getting going. He's a big contender for this event and I can see him making the final. 16/1 to win Miami is massive (with an 8/1 payout if he makes the final), and I'm getting involved.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Guys need urgent help. My bookie has been recently offering a double result where I predict the player who will win the 1st set and win the match. I wanted to find out if I wager such a double result and the player wins the match but loses the 1st set or wins the first set but loses the match, DOES THE BET BECOME VOID AND MY STAKE RETURNED OR DO I LOSE IF ONE RESULT LOSES? Reason I ask is I had a bet last week on nadal to win the 1st set and win the match. He won the match but lost the 1st set and my stake was refunded.im not sure if it was a mistaake or those are the rules they apply. Im afraid to ask in case they realise the mistake if it is indeed a mistake. help:unsure

You need both parts of the bet to win to get a payout. Otherwise, the double will be a loss.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Right, now that the outright is out of the way, let's get down to business with some match-play. Always tricky in the first round, there is a temptation to go tonto and pick everything. Until the qualifiers throw up some juicy bets in the main draw - and they probably will - here are my four selections. Stakes should be kept medium at very best - we are playing with some trash here. I'll kick off proceedings with Juan Martin Del Potro. His comeback has been very impressive but he's still outwith the seedings, so a match against Ricardo Mello is his R1 reward. I think it should be fairly routine for the big Argentine. Mello is past his best, a wee scurrier of a player who can be nifty, but not at this level. His best work was done in Costa do Sauipe, where he made the semis on clay. Took John Isner to a breaker in Indian Wells but Delpo has got so much more in his locker. The groundies are coming back, and he's trusting his wrist more and more. Mello hasn't got the luxury of a huge serve, and I can't see him living with Del Potro, especially when the Argentine gets infront and Mello starts to chase. -6 games on the handicap does seem a little tall, so I'm taking UNDER 19 GAMES (1.909 with Pinnacle - 4pts) in this one. What I like about early rounds is that they create good double opportunities, so I've taken a couple here. The bigger of the two is BENJAMIN BECKER x PHILIPP PETZSCHNER (2.30 with William Hill - 4pts). Becker takes on Marcel Granollers. Every time I do my research, I am amazed to see Granollers ranked in the top 60. He's either bribing the ATP or the ranking computer is wrong (actually, it's neither - he's got decent points on the clay). I don't like Granollers away from Europe, and on this surface. His serve is okay but he lacks bite off the wings, and Becker's a man who could beat his poor defences with power alone. The German was in a rut but beat Thiemo de Bakker in Indian Wells to get some confidence back. He's got a nice enough game on a hard court - nice enough, IMO, to beat Granollers. Handicap's not for me though, so going to parlay him up with Petzschner, who plays Florent Serra. I think Serra is passed his sell-by date and the Frenchman will be eagerly anticipating the clay season. Hard courts don't get the best out of him, especially quicker conditions. He's played Petzscher twice before and lost both times. Petzschner can be shady but I feel he'll come here motivated - in the next round, he could face his doubles partner Jurgen Melzer, and his game is suited to these conditions. The German is in better form, and has twice got the 'W' over Serra. Happy for him to complete my Germanic double by backing the hat-trick. The lesser of my two doubles in terms of stakes is another all-European affair in JARKKO NIEMINEN x JANKO TIPSAREVIC (2.33 with William Hills - 3pts). Both men have opponents well out of form on the outdoor hard court. Nieminen takes on Kukushkin, who only seems to bring his 'A' game to the table when indoors in some dark, sinister eastern bloc nation. Quite a powerful little player and enjoys it when challenged to a spank-fest from the baseline, but often struggles against guys who move the ball around and look for angles, such as Nieminen. The Finn had a bad R1 exit against Albert Montanes in Indian Wells but this is an easier assignment, and I'd back him to win it. Tipsarevic has perhaps the harder task against Robin Haase, but the Dutchman's defeat to Rainer Schuettler sets off alarm bells. I backed Haase then, reckoning he'd finally find his way off the clay, but it appears he reserves his best tennis for the red brick. Tipsarevic did lose to Haase two years ago in Sunrise, but I think the Serb is in a fairly decent place at present. Made the final of Delray Beach and has been consistent enough in early rounds. I'd reckon he'll beat Haase, although it might go three sets if Haase serves well. Finally, I'm going back to an old watering hole. Andreas Seppi is my overs king, and he takes on Mischa Zverev. Both men are very capable but they have the mental fortitude of a five-year-old. Neither man is known for making life smooth for the punter. Seppi should have beaten Victor Hanescu in R1 of Indian Wells but didn't, and covered the overs. Zverev took Tommy Robredo close but couldn't get the win either. What's more, when these two mental giants met in their only previous meeting, it went three sets. Zverev is reputable for his fitness issues, but assuming he comes here fit, I expect this match to be a long affair. OVER 22 GAMES (1.971 with Pinnacle - 3pts) can be covered in two tight sets, although I reckon we'll see three. Health warning: if you decide to follow this bet, and then follow the match, keep the stake low, and bring a heart monitor. Good luck :ok

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Agreed 100% on Del Potro. Can see at worst a push there so will take it. Del Potro vs Mello UNDER 19 games AH @ 1.909 (Pinnacle:4pts) Del Potro getting back to his best, still have question marks when he faces top players but he should be able to come through relatively comfortably against the likes of Mello - can see a straight sets win here with Delpo overpowering Mello. The Brazilian is a decent player, actually has a decent record on hard but mainly challenger level events in Sth America. Cant see too much resistance here. gl! Petsz and Becker mate, talk about putting yourself through the mill........:loon....

Normally I'd agree, but considering their opponents, I'd fancy both to do it. As I said earlier, we are playing with the garden compost here. Cash to be had, let's hope the two Germans can oblige ... and of course, Del Potro.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Nikolay Davydenko vs Kevin Anderson. Over 22 games. 1.98 @ Pinnacle (6/10) The way I see this match going is that Anderson will bomb down his huge serves and Davydenko will have very few chances to break whilst will hold himself with ease as well. The surface definitely will suit Anderson who is all about serve and can hit some groundies as well. They both had a memorable match in Wimbledon last year, Davydenko managed to grind it out only in 5 sets, 9-7 in the decider. Davydenko had just seven break points over five sets and took 4 chances so not much going right for him. Expect this match to be very tight and 22 games gives us a chances to get away with 7-6, 6-3 in either way. Virginie Razzano +3.5 AH vs Alize Cornet. 2.08 @ Pinnacle (5/10) Very rarely I can agree on Cornet being favorite in this kind of match and today is not the case. Alize only in better shape of the two, other than that Razzano would be a clear favorite, she has beaten Cornet 3 times in 5 matches and lost only on clay but won all matches on faster surfaces - two times on hard and once on grass. Razzano has had terrible time lately but she is well capable of beating Cornet who is having her same old serve issues and mental problems as well. Odds for Razzano win looks really nice, though having just a handicap as a precaution. 3.5 for Cornet usually is too much to cover.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Agnes Szavay -3 AH vs Shuai Zhang. 1.85 @ Nordicbet (6/10) Agnes Szavay playing only her second tournament of the year. She beat Craybas before losing to Kleybanova in Indian Wells, this week should be better in terms of form and her mood as well. Zhang nothing special lately and needed to play qualies here. She went through only last night after beating Birnerova in three sets, Birnerova of course more know for her doubles performances, still she managed to take a set out of Zhang and had 13 break points, converting six of those. Szavay despite being far from her best form should be able to beat player like Zhang. 3 games also is not that much to deal with here, so having handicap. Xavier Malisse to beat Ryan Sweeting. 1.75 @ Pinnacle (5/10) I think Malisse just about will have an edge in this match. He can offer far more on return than Sweeting and should be able to get a win today. Sweeting of course very athletic youngster and having decent serve but in terms of experience he's lacking quite a bit. Malisse bit him 7-6, 6-3 in Atlanta last year and I think we could see a similar scoreline today as well. Timea Bacszinsky to beat Vesna Manasieva. 1.65 @ Pinnacle (5/10) Bacszinsky pushed Zvonareva all the way in Indian Wells last week and is a quality player when she's in form. That won't be needed today against Manasieva who is very average player and one set is a maximum for the Russian player today. Bacszinsky has beaten her both times they played and really can't see any other outcome than another win for the Swiss player. Wouldn't touch handicap which can be shaky if she gives up on one of the sets.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Have found out one more quality offer. Marsel Ilhan to beat Tobias Kamke. 2.05 @ Pinnacle (5/10) These two played last week in a Challenger event in Guadeloupe, Ilhan came out on top winning in straight sets 7-6, 6-3. I think playing couple qualies matches would do little harm to him. Kamke is in horrible form and has beaten only Challenger players this season. Can't agree that he should be rated as a favorite in this match.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 WTA Miami R1 Dokic to bt Safina @Pinnacle 2.45 Though Safina shows signs of recovering from horrible shape she has been in during the end of 2010, she has not shown enough consitency so far to be trusted. This year she has been mostly losing in R1 (though to quality players like Wickmayer, Bartoli and Clijsters), and had the only good run last week at IW where she lost in round 4 to Sharapova. She is a big hitter that can place superb winners in rallies, but she is also capable to give away a game solely by doublefaulting, which always creates a pressure on her still weak psychic. On the other hand, Jelena Dokic is on the run, having won her last 7 matches including a final in Kuala Lumpur three weeks ago. Jelena is big fighter and is mentally quite strong, having survived couple of matchpoints against her in the Kuala Lumpur final. H2H is 2-0 for Safina, but the last match is from 2009 when Dinara was in much better form and Jelena was still on her way back up. IMO Jelena is returning to the top group where she has already been 9 years ago, and is to extend her winning strike today. GL :hope

Sport Tennis
Event Santiago Giraldo vs. Igor Andreev
Selection Giraldo
Strength 10/10
Date 23/03/2011
Bookmaker/Price Pinnacle Sports @ 2.21
Reasoning Well, Igor Andreev did impressed in his latest games from Indian Wells as he has won against Kei Nishikori and has played a tight match against Roger Federer. There are no doubts that Andreev did started to play much more closer to his real level, but still I have to mentionate for example that his closed game made against Federer was due to Roger's increased number of unforced errors. Igor Andreev is a player who surely deserves a better position than his actual one's but no stability is still a well deserved word for him. Today Andreev will play against Santiago Giraldo and it seems that a closed game should be this one and there are no doubts that this will be very probable, but I have to mentionate that Santiago Giraldo in 2011 did looked much more stable than the russian player who lacked so many times the consistence. All in all, the difference in class between these two players is not so meaningful despite I will say that Santiago Giraldo is the better player due to his much more stable backhand and deffensive skills. Anyway, the most important aspect here is Andreev's no stabiity, that is all about. Good Luck!

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Gabashvili vs Brands OVER 22 games AH @ 1.917 (Pinny:5pts) Would probably set this at 22.5 or 23 games tbh. 2 mugs in my view, neither do their best work on outdoor hard surface and neither is in form at all. Gabashvili is a ball-basher, usually better on clay....he lost to Skugor last week in a challenger event and Serra at Indian Wells. Brands likewise not up to much, lost to Bopanna in 2 tie-breaks at IW with neither facing a break point in the match. Usual big server, and brainless hitter but I think he'll be able to get into this match with Gabashvili....hard to see either closing it out easy IMO. Morita +5.5 games over Bartoli @ 1.909 (Pinny:3pts) Just trying to fade Bartoli here, think she will fall at some point this week after a gruelling run at Indian Wells to the final losing in 3 to Wozniacki...she was tearful and looked shattered after that one. Hard to know whether she comes out all guns blazing here....she leads h2h 3-0 but Morita has covered this line in all of those games...she is an improving player, nothing special really...moves well, gets balls back from both wings. Beat young Watson in rd 1 so maybe she is ready to put up a fight here. Will also stick a unit on outright win for Morita to bt Bartoli @ 5.00 (Bwin:1pt)....in general I wouldnt say she has the weapons to beat a player like Bartoli but she did beat big-hitter Kvitova a few weeks back in Dubai 7-6 7-6 when she was jaded so it could be a value play if Marion doesnt show up at her best. gl!

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Leans for today: Kei Nishikori, Janko Tipsarevic, Grigor Dimitrov, Ryan Harrison, Ivo Karlovic, Richard Berankis. Dimitrov is described as more promising then Federer when Federer was in the same age as Dimitrov now. I can't see Stakhovsky as a winner. It's time for Dimitrov to step up for real. I allways have some doubts about Tipsa but Haase is in awful form.4 Berankis odds is nice and I'm very sure he will take care of the very average player Feliciano Lopez. Harrison wins no doubt. Nishikori should eventually go through against Chardy. Karlovic had a good run in IW and I belive he will continue.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 Floran Mayer vs Ivo Karlovic Karlovic to win 2 sets to love 7/5 @ PaddyPower----- Rating: 9.5/10 Karlovic has always been a dangerous player with that thunderous serve he brings to the table on a consistent basis, the issue with Karlovic has always been his county - national university standard groundstrokes, he couldn't live with baseliners and especially people that can hit the good passing shot. This season he is showing promising signs of improving in this area, his forehand during the Indian Wells Masters was simply sensational to say the least, the penetration he got on the ball and the way in which Rafael Nadal (One of the best retrievers / defensive players in the game) was finding hard to get back. He barely dropped a set in his lead up to his quarter final match up against Nadal, demolished Simon and made Montanes look very mediocre. On top of this Mayer has been in rechid form and hasn't impressed me whatsoever in 2011 and I see a more than comprehensive win for Karlovic.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 S Stakhovsky v G Dimitrov S Stakhovsky to win 4/5 @ PaddyPower ----- Rating 7.5/10 Stakhovsky is a very tricky player, especially if your defensive skills are weak, Dimitrov as promising he is offensively, has very weak defensive skills, he doesn't have the mobility to defend when on the backfoot. Stakhovsy has flat and attacking groundstrokes and tricky serve to match, its really not a good match up in terms of styles. Stakhovsky has also been on relatively good form, whereas Dimitrov has flattered to deceives on many occasions. He is winning challengers and murdering players lowly ranked but can never seem to ever make an impression on anyone remotely decent and I believe the trend will continue.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 F Fognini v R Stepanek F Fognini to win 7/4 @ PaddyPower ------- Rating 5.5/10 Very under-rated player Fognini up against an ageing and quite honestly past it Stepanek, Fognini on his day can power past player's as good as Davydenko and even manage to nick sets of guys like Wawrinka, yet he can also lose to someone ranked outside the top 100. He is somewhat eratic, however is in a a bit of good form as of late and should no way be price as almost 2/1 against Stepanek on a moderate speed hard-court. A punt never-the-less as you don't know what you are going to get with Fognini, but if he performs, should over-throw Stepanek's old fashioned serve and volley style with his dynamic baseline game.

Re: Tennis - 21 March - April 4 And a small treble for me in WTA. Wickmayer x Sharapova x Peer @ 1.988 (Pinnacle:4pts) Really like Wickmayer and fancy her to come through well against Vesnina here, the Russian crushed Dulko in rd 1 but overall I dont think she's at her best this year.Wickmayer on the other hand is gaining some consistency mainly losing to strong players and should have too much today. Sharapova plays Martic, I can see Martic getting overpowered by Maria even though she is still having issues on her serve. Peer plays Medina-Garrigues who has been woeful for a long-time, mainly a clay-courter. She seems to be picking up a bit recently but Peer is like a wall and its hard to see her losing this one. gl!

Sport Tennis
Event Philipp Petzschner vs. Florent Serra
Selection Serra
Strength 10/10
Date 24/03/2011
Bookmaker/Price Pinnacle Sports @ 3.52
Reasoning Philipp Petzschner is a very overrated player at the moment, there are no doubts that his results were very good results against difficult players like Ernests Gulbis or Philipp Kohlschreiber but speaking certain about these two games I just have to mentionate that both and Gulbis and Philipp Kohlschreiber didn't played closed to their real level. Petzschner is a player who is not even a complete one, he possess a good serve and nice touches at the net, a good slice as well, but from the defence point of view, from the footwork point of view he lacks so many aspects in his game. Florent Serra is a great defender who can play stable tennis from the baseline and playing against a player like Petzschner who likes to attepmt at the net many times Serra should be able to make that passive shot. All in all, Petzschner is without any doubts very overrated in this game as his two big wins were against favourites that purely didn't played their best tennis. Good Luck!

Sport Tennis
Event Iveta Benesova - Flavia Pennetta
Selection Iveta Benesova
Strength 10/10
Date 24/03/2011
Bookmaker/Price Bwin @ 4.15
Reasoning Miami WTA Premier (USA) - Hard Court, Round of 64. Flavia Pennetta is favorite in this match but not for me. In my opinion Iveta Benesova can win this match. Odds are fantastic! For example in bwin we can see od 4,15! Flavia Pennetta was playing very good in Sydney, Australian Open or Dubai but in my opinion Flavia Pennetta is without big shape lately. In Indian Wells she won first match but after three sets and big problems against poor player - Elena Baltacha. In second round Flavia lost against Kleybanova - for example in Dubai Pennetta easy defeated Kleybanova 6-2 6-0 but in Indian Wells she lost 3-6 4-6. Flavia leads 4-3 in head-to-head series so she shouldn't be big favorite here! Iveta Benesova in Miami has won one match - against Roberta Vinci 92 minutes. Iveta was serving very nice - her 1st Serve look excellent - 1st Serve Points Won 76% (31/41). As I said I think that Iveta Benesova can win this match. Odd is fantastic!
