Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011

For people like myself this is a big tournament with Hampshire and Somerset invited into the West Indian domestic twenty20 tournament. That should add to the quality of the tournament which only had 4 or 5 competitive matches last year. Slight change to the format too. Two groups of 5 which have at least 3 strong sides in each group. Top two through to the semis. All Hampshire and Somerset matches begin at 8pm UK time and they're all on Eurosport. There's also highlights of the midnight games the following day. Should be some decent betting opportunities as we go along in this. Schedule:

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011

I'm guessing Pollard although damn good hasn't mastered being in 2 places at once yet?? So as he's playing for South Australia in the Big Bash... He won't be playing for T&T?!?
Correct mate. Ditto Dwayne Bravo for T&T and Chris Gayle for Jamaica.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Right this starts in an hour and a half but it's taken me a while to gather info on all the sides that are in it. Luckily the opening game won't have too much effect on the outright market so me being late shouldn't inconvenience anyone. I'm going with 2 outrights. 2pts Hampshire to win Caribbean T20 8/1 William Hill 1pt Guyana to win Caribbean T20 11/2 Sportingbet I'm going with two here. One from each group and both who I think are overpriced. I guess the biased accusations could be levelled at me for the Hampshire pick and in many ways it would be right but I think there's solid merits for backing the Royals here. We've sent a young squad out to the Caribbean but it's still a capable one. The likes of James Vince, Jimmy Adams, Danny Briggs and Sean Ervine were hugely effective in Hampshire winning the domestic competition last season. Players like Liam Dawson, Chris Wood, Hamza Riazuddin, Simon Jones and Michael Bates all figured strongly in that success too. Ok our main captain being injured and his replacement fcuking about on an ice rink isn't ideal but Jimmy Adams has been around long enough to know the wood from the trees. I still think the 11 which go out onto the field will be very competitive. New signing Johann Myburgh can fill the gap left by Carberry and Lumb at the top of the order. Our expected side for the 1st match is Adams, Myburgh, Vince, Ervine, Dawson, Howells, Bates, Tomlinson, Wood, Riazuddin and Jones which is more than competitive. So although Hampshire are weakened it has to be said so are just about every other side in this competition. Trinidad & Tobago are favourites for the event but they couldn't win it last year with Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard so I can't be backing them at a shortish price without them although they do earn respect. Jamaica will be without Chris Gayle which automatically does them no good and last year's runners up Barbados put out a full strength side in a warm up match with Hampshire and lost which emphasises the competitiveness in the Hampshire squad. Somerset, who've also been invited to this competition will be without 3 key cogs in their twenty20 success last season. Marcus Trescothick can't leave the country, Craig Kieswetter is injured and Kieron Pollard is out in the Big Bash. Murali Kartik, another who went well hasn't been selected for this event. They still have strength in the likes of Hildreth, Trego, Buttler and Compton with the bat and Thomas, Willoughby and Trego again with the ball but their spin options are young and they are in the tougher of the two groups so I've opted for Hampshire out of the two UK sides at a bigger price. One side who aren't weakened though are Guyana. In fact, having won this competition last year they are even stronger this time around as Shivnerine Chanderpaul is available to play for them. Shiv missed both the Caribbean T20 and the Champions League last year so having him available is a massive boost for Guyana. Guyana could well field a top 4 of Chattergoon, Dowlin, Sarwan and Chanderpaul. That's pretty strong for this level and with hitters to come after that Guyana have to be respected. I've purposely backed sides who have a good level of spin quality in them because with this competition being played in only 2 ground these wickets will turn. Hampshire have Danny Briggs and Liam Dawson who can turn the ball while Ervine's cutters will be tough to face. Guyana are known for their spinning quality so it's Hampshire to win this with a saver on probably the strongest side Guyana for me in this Caribbean twenty20 tournament.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Was going to back the handicap on the Windward Islands in this 1st match but Sportingbet have pulled their markets down. Not a huge fan of backing anyone at 8/13 in this format so unless Sportingbet's markets suddenly appear in the next 10 minutes I'll leave the opening match alone.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Going to take one in the non televised late match. 3pts Guyana to beat Jamaica Evs Bet365 I've said most of what I needed to about Guyana above. I don't see how Jamaica are priced up as favourites here unless it's by virtue of bookies not realising Chris Gayle is absent. This wicket looks a bit slow and I think it's going to suit Guyana's batsmen and bowlers right down to the ground. Jamaica aren't completely blessed in the spin department with the exception of Nikita Miller. Their batting is seriously weakened with the absence of Chris Gayle. I really like the make up of this Guyanese side and with this being the 2nd match on this wicket I'm confident Guyana will beat the Jamaicans in this one.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Guyana v Somerset - Match Betting Guyana @ 11/10 6 points @ will hill This is painful for me, but the bet makes sense. There are only a maximum of 5 of the strongest somerset T20 first 11 available for this tournament and of those missing vital cogs of the cider army machine such as Trescothick, Pollard, KArtik and Kieswetter are absent. They are huge players to replace and whilst Dockrell, and Saqlain Mushtaq are vey capable spinners, the batting line up will rely on Hildreth, Trego and Buttler to perform along with some talented youth. Guyana are in home conditions and with the likes of Chanderpaul, Sarwan and Dowlin to call upon they have quality. Somerset are bound to be undercooked and as for Hants last night, I expect the underdog to win.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Never in doubt :$ shame for Somerset but that was inexperience at it's most damaging. Needing 8 to win they self imploded and decided to score in run outs as opposed to runs. Ah well good for the bet but shame for my heart. Somersets batting, as with hampshires looked light! People like buttler batting 2 or 3 places higher than normal.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 It's a really open tournament isn't it, low quality as well. Guyana despite their two batting performances will always be in with a chance with the likes of Sarwan, Dowling and Shiv. I was surprised with Hampshire the other night, you are similar to us with your light batting. Much relies on Vince and Jimmy. I think Vince is absolutely top drawer! Good luck tonight - are you betting?

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Am i missing something, since when has Kemar Roach deserved to be favourite in the top batsman market at a measerly price of 4/1. Off to research Barabados - didnt see their last result but im guessing he was pinch hitting?

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Barbados v Hampshire - Top Home Batsman Jonathan Carter @ 9/2 1 point Will Hill He is likely to bat 3 which should guarantee him time at the crease. Carter is a confident young batsman who is pushing for ODI recognition and has a good strike rate being able to hit a big ball and find regualar boundaries. I think the slower bowlers will suit him and allow him to take top runscorer here.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Barbados v Hampshire - Most Sixes Barbados @ 10/11 4 points @ hills For me this is all about Smith, Carter, Holder and Morris against Adams, Ervine, Vince and Myburgh. Looking at stats, Barbados certainly edge it in the strike rate of hitting sixes per match. That combined with the quality of Benn and the pace of Roach and Best make 6's harder to comeby for Hampshire. Familiar conditions and the slow pich should all suit Barbados as well as form and match practise.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 One for me in the early match. 3pts Hampshire (+2.5 wickets/15.5 runs) to beat Barbados 5/6 Sportingbet I think this handicap on Hampshire is a little bit big. I'm not completely confident enough to take us on the straight win after we've just been turned over by Canada but we did see last night that strange results do happen here so we've got to forget them and concentrate on each game at a time. Hampshire beat Barbados in a warm up match before this tournament which should give the Royals some confidence going forward in this match. Against Canada we struggled with the bat against the spinners but apart from Suliemann Benn, Barbados don't have an abundance of spin talent and I think the likes of Adams, Myburgh and Vince will prefer facing the likes of Timo Best and Kemar Roach. Even though they were only chasing 113 in their 1st match, Barbados were in real trouble at 23/4 and I think Hampshire's bowlers are good enough to contain this Barbados side. A Hampshire win wouldn't surprise me and if I've missed out on the 6/4 shot then such is life, it will help the outright anyway but this way I've got a close loss on my side so I'll take Hampshire on this handicap.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 a good innings for Hampshire - Vince never had a chance. One bet has caught my eye and I have put a big bet on. Barbados v Hampshire - Barbados 1st Over Runs Over (4.5) @ 4/6 9 points - will hill Barbados need to score at just under 7 an over. The new ball with the field up will be easiest to score. Smith is an attacking batsman and scores very quickly, wood could easily bowl a boundary ball. This line is normally 6.5 so 4.5 seems very low, especially after watching Hampshires innings. The pitch didnt play up, the sun is out, the score is on the bigger side so i'm happy to take a big bet here.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 I agree. In the last month we've seen two very good test series and now 3 excellent twenty20 matches and I'm sure with the 3 ODI series in action or about to start we'll see some crackers in that format too. All proving there's room for all 3 in cricket. Onto tonight then and I'll go with one. 3pts Windward Islands to beat Somerset 11/10 William Hill I'm surprised the Windwards are odds against here. That batting collapse Somerset performed on Wednesday night is going to have lingering effects. They always do. It's not the strongest batting line up that Somerset have ever put out anyway but with the pressure on the top order even more now given Wednesday's collapse I just think I'd have the Windwards favourites here. Windward Islands have some very good cricketers in their ranks, some of whom have international experience with the Windies. Andre Fletcher, Darren Sammy, Devon Smith and Shane Shillingford have all played a fair bit of international cricket now so it's not as though Somerset are up against duds here. Windward Isles played well in their first match to see off the Combined Colleges & Campuses side who've since beaten Jamaica in this tournament so at odds against I think the form line and confidence is on the side of the Caribbean team in the opening match tonight.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Great game nice call Kev!- Damn Simon Jones that first over was quality - great performance by him though. Big gamble didnt pay this time. Im still weighing up tonights game - i agree with you Kev about Somerset's batting lineup being weak, but they still have Trego, Compton, Buttler, Hildredth, Suppiah all who bat in top 7 in county championship and other forms. They were poor the other night, but so were Hamp's and look at the improvement in their batting performance yesterday. Interestingly the commentators last night said that the pitch for tonights game was expected to be the fastest of the tournamnet so far, which can only suit batsmen like Buttler and Trego who like the ball coming on to the bat. I fancy Somerset I think but not at 4/6 may let it run and see if i can grab evens or better in running - it never fails to amaze me the swing in inplay betting - after timing i know but i got 9/4 on australia in todays game just after we lost Collingwood - that was simply way too big. Do you take many inplay bets like that Kev or anyone else out there?

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 A few for me tonight, still thinking about Somerset vs Winward. However: 6pts CC&C to beat Guyana @6/4 with B365 This is being priced up on name alone, and perhaps last years form. Guyana have looked awful in both games so far. They were skittled for 65 against Jamaica when chasing a small score, and it took one of the biggest chokes ever from Somerset for them to narrowly win their 2nd game. The whole approach to constructing the innings is all wrong - too many players that play themselves in, and often the powerplay is wasted. You just can't afford that in this format. Dowlin is out of form, Chanders not cut out for this format, and the batting order keeps on being changed. CC&C don't have many known players in their lineup, but they have been impressive in both games so far. Dropped catches cost them against Winward, but they still hit 161 in reply to chasing 189. In their 2nd game they beat Jamaica by chasing 138 comfortably enough. Guyana may come in and put in a spirited performance due to being boosted by the dramatic win over Somerset, but at these odds you just have to back CC&C. If they can take apart a Jamaica attack containing Taylor and Miller, I'm sure that they have the quality to get at Guyana.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Don't have time for a write-up so won't include it in points for this thread, but have had a relatively decent sized bet on Somerset to beat Winward. Must win game, and think that their bowlers have more control. Faster deck expected and this should suit the likes of Trego and Butler - they play on a flat pitch all year round :rollin Buttler top scorer also a decent bet imo.

Re: Cricket: Caribbean Twenty20 2011 Sorry mate! Unbelievable that CC&C managed to lose that game considering the position they were in. Their odds touched 1.01 and rightfully so! Shame I didn't hedge the bet, or at least get my stake out using betfair. That's 2 games in a row where Guyana have completely smashed 1.01 odds. On a better note, Somerset won and Buttler top-scored :)
