  1. Re: My Play with JACKS It all depends on who I'm playing, if it's a cash game or a tournement and my position on the table. Firstly I would rarely fold JJ pre flop unless a player I really rated came in with a monster raise. Normally I would raise with JJ as in most instances I will be ahead of anyone else. This should get people out who hold A + Rag (which it didn't in your case). If someone calls with AK or AQ or AJ then you are still favourite to win the pot. Here are some odds JJ vs AKo = JJ is 56.65% favourite. JJ vs AKs = JJ is 53.68% favourite. JJ vs AQo = JJ is 57.17% favourite. JJ vs AQs = JJ is 53.77% favourite. If more than one player calls with Aces then your odds improve even further as they have reduced their chances by each holding an Ace. The nightmare callers are JJ vs AA = AA is 80.31% favourite. JJ vs KK = KK is 80.68% favourite. JJ vs QQ = QQ is 81.10% favourite. These are the cards I would be worrying about if a very strong player raised all in. Only in these circumstances would I fold.... and that comes down to how good your intuition is.... It all depends on your approach to poker. I believe that successful betting is about spotting value. As I know I'm going to be ahead against the vast majority of callers I would often raise as more often than not I will win the pot. This equates to a 'value' bet in my mind. I tend to be quite successful in MTT's (unless it is the PL game where I'm cursed :( ). One of the reasons why I believe I'm quite good in such tournements is that I don't try and hang around just to scrape into the money. If I believe I'm ahead at any point in a hand I am quite aggressive - if someone has the cajones to try and outdraw me then so be it. I'm favourite - so lets play cards! Some people might just flat call the BB with JJ and see what the flop brings. I tend to see this as giving the A/K/Q + Rag players three free cards. I want to bust these guys out pre flop if I can with JJ. Some players are so very, very tight. I think this is ok in order to grind out a living in cash games but in MTT's or STT's I think you need to loosen up a bit or the increasing blinds will eat you alive. Hope this helps. :ok

  2. Re: Argument hand :lol :lol :lol I didn't remember the exact exchange Equinoxx - but as I thought - I didn't start it - I just finished it. Alien has made lame excuses about me getting personal when all I did was better his jibe.

  3. Re: Argument hand Norfolk. Whilst this hand was not played on my table I did come in on the argument afterwards. Here are my observations. a) Alien was not giving constructive advice he was bleating like a baby about percentages and awful calls. The whole of the table took exception to his attitude because of his manner. Trying to justify this as 'constructively trying to help' after the event is a poor attempt to cover up a grumpy strop. As equinoxx said - he wouldn't let it drop for ages. b) Alien often comments on other peoples play. I remember going 'all in' UTG on KK early in one of the PL tourneys. I got no callers and showed my cards. Aliens comment was "Shit play". In other words this is typical of his commentary. c) The PL tourneys are supposed to be a friendly, banter filled tourney. It was not the place for tantrums - which is what was thrown. d) Aliens comment about people working from 9 to 5 for a living was another theme of the comments made at the table. This provoked a jokey response from me and a few others which Alien is now trying to use as me getting personal first :lol - I didn't even start that vein of conversation - I just happened to have a corking put down! :tongue2 e) Read my first posts on this thread. They are constructive and not argumentative at all. Then see how Alien turns it into an argument and you will get the flavour of what happened at the table. I haven't bothered with reading Jezza's post again - not because I might have misunderstood - but because there is no point arguing with Alien about anything. It would carry on for pages and pages and pages and I just don't see the point (Plus I would get the blame). f) When people want advice they will ask for it - they don't want it rammed down their throats. I often ask Jezza how he would have played a hand if he watches me because I respect his ability and the way he instructs. Alien might be a cracking player but his way of showing it isn't they way I want to hear it - and judging by everyones reaction to his manner at the table 95% of PL members seem to agree. Lastly - this isn't even my argument. I just posted (what I thought) to be a very reasonable answer on this thread and old Alien went off his head (AGAIN). Please don't try and make me the bad guy again because that old chestnut of me being to blame for every altercation is getting very tiring. Like I say - please go back to page one and see my first two posts and the smiley emoticons and you will see this thread turned into an argument because someone else was gunning for one - not me. :D

  4. Re: Argument hand Alien I haven't revisited Jezza's post as it is becoming a mute point. I haven't really got much more to say to you Ken - on this or anything really. :\

  5. Re: Argument hand Dunno about that. Sometimes I decide to play looser earlier on for two reasons. a) Most people play tight early (like you and Alien) so I can nick some pots. b) I hate spending 3 hours on the computer playing a tourney and ending up with nothing. For this reason I often make a stand early to get some chips or to get out and not waste my time. I don't always play like this. Depends on the stake, the number of players and the prize.

  6. Re: Argument hand

He said he could forgive someone for going broke with it there, highly different to saying he might have called as well, so why don't you re-read his post ?
As for the AK well I would probably just have called you down if I had had that.
    Just for the record.
  7. Re: Argument hand

    Hope i'm not at work
You mean you work for a living???? How dare you play in the prestigious PL tourney then? Only for pro's that competition you know. :lol :lol
  8. Re: Argument hand Alien, So you're not going to be giving 'advice' at the table any more? Good. :ok What you fail to realise is that if people want advice they will ask for it Alien (and probably not from you). Your manners on the table are abrasive and your commentary argumentative. You were not being conciliatory in your tone in the slightest. You did 'a Hellmuth' and said it was an 'awful call' - it wasn't awful at all. He had top pair and a King kicker. It wasn't a great call - but 'awful' no. If you read Jezza's post again you will see that he said he might have called with the AK too (try not to cherry pick just the bits you WANT to acknowledge in other peoples replies.) As for

You talk yourself up very much but judging by your depresser ramblings in GC you still aren't very happy with yourself, anwyay....
I thought this was childish and personal. No need for that Ken as I was debating poker with you and stating that you give advice at the table which is often unwanted. I fail to see how you justify making a general disparaging remark about me. Shame on you.
  9. Re: Argument hand :lol :lol Alien my post wasn't a moan at all. Just a post to say how I went out that's all. I didn't critisise anyones play or dish out any 'advice'. Every time I lose in the PL tourney everyone will tell you that, bad beat or not, I am extremely well mannered and good natured about it. In fact I'll have you know that I'm considered a Gentleman when I play live games because of the way I take my beats. (A croupier told me that I had this reputation by the way). :D I only walked in on the back of your argument last night Alien but I thought you were going over the top considering it was a 'friendly'. You've dished out unwanted advice to me before now as well so I know this is typical of your 'style'. Seeing as you haven't been playing the game that long you sure like to tell everyone how to play! I'll leave you to argue with yourself about poker for a bit. :lol

  10. Re: Argument hand Hmmm - I think you might have got the "who won the pot" comment based on the fact you made the initial comment of it being an "awful call". I don't think that the call was "awful" - I've seen a lot, lot worse. He has the top pair and the best kicker (unless the kicker is paired on the flop as yours was). He has to figure you for AJ or a SET to be behind. He figured that you didn't have one of these hands (wrongly) and that you were behind or drawing to the flush. So he called. Not the best call I've seen, but no where near the worst. It's very early in the tourney and he might be thinking that he'll try to double up rather than sit there all night to end up 4th and not in the money. Some people play a little looser early in a tourney.... Personally Alien, I find people who bang on about peoples 'shiitty' play rather tiresome. Maybe you should change your strapline to Hellmuth Punter? :tongue2

  11. Re: Poker Tournament ~ *Tonight 8pm* I can honestly say I'm cursed on the PL tourneys. I have been out to so many tight / bad draws in the six so far I'm beginning to wonder if it's all a fix!!! :lol :lol Tonight I'm in 2nd. I'm on the BB. I have K8. Check all round. Flop comes K, X, 8 Turn 2 River 5 I'm all in. Opponent calls with KK. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Short stacked now. I have 5,4 (blind next hand I have to play so 'ALL IN') The flop comes KQ4 (one caller) Turn comes 4!!! (I'm saved) River comes K. He has a King and makes trips. I hate poker. :tongue2

  12. Re: If you're playing now... All on this thread please. Yeah no probs mate. The Gala in Leicester is going to host some poker tourneys soon. BillyHills and CrazySuzy might go up there for a few games I believe? Maybe we could all meet up one night? Just went out of my second MTT - My JJ ran into AA. On to the Cash games for me. :(

  13. Re: If you're playing now... All on this thread please. I just noticed that you're from Halesowen Staffy. You want to join the Rainbow casino and play a few poker games there. The standard is very good indeed and you would learn a lot. If you ever go let me know and maybe we could meet up for a glass of wine or two? I've just entered a $27 MTT - Let's see how that goes. :D
