  1. Re: Shergar Cup Thread Wheres the promotion for it ? How many people will be converted to horseracing after this exercise ? Bit like them football / horse racing crossovers where the owners silks are replaced with colours of various football teams.WTF are they about ???

  2. Re: Shergar Cup Thread The prizemoney again is £14k per race again. Obviously it doesn't affect the betting public but i think the inaugural event offered £50k and £100k. Noticed the arabs have supported the event again ,not sure why they boycotted some incarnations.

  3. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

Also........are the jockeys drawn randomly ? If so aren't you going to have lots of overweights ? Normally a trainer would book a jockey who can do the weight in a handicap, but if it's random...............
I'm pretty sure they are drawn randomly , it would be the fairest method.
  4. Re: Shergar Cup Thread To recap Not the best jockeys to represent Britain. The name of a champion horse used to promote a mediocre event. ( The Canford Cliffs Ladies only Hands and Heels Handicap Hurdle , wrong name , get my gist ) 10 not 12 horses per race when 4 teams involved. Betting on individual horses when team tactics may come into play. These are some of the reasons why this event is awful. I know some of you have said you don't mind it but can you highlight any good points ?

  5. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

I thought there were 12 in every race ..........I've only just noticed that the bottom 2 are reserves by looking at the Life cards The RP doesn't state that they are reserves.........just doesn't have jockeys names ! I've picked horses in 6 of the races for my Cup entry tomorrow without realising that there are reserves..........:loon
Not sure , might have 12 per race , in other incarnations they had 10 per race. 12 would be better.
  6. Re: Shergar Cup Thread Next gripe. How can betting on individual horses be compatable with a team competition ? Behind closed doors who knows what the teams are scheming ? Are they going to sacrifice one of the horses to block certain other horses? Are they not going to set the pace with a comfirmed front runner to throw off the other teams , just like the Rewilding tactics in the King George recently ? These sort of tactics may develop depending on the points situation as the afternoon develops. A team in front in points may sacrice all their horses in a bid to prevent points being awarded to a particular team. We are not privvy to that sort of information which from a betting perspective is essential. I recall watching the build up of the 1995 Derby and it showed W Swinburn , C Asmussen and L Dettori in a corner having a discussion. Who came 1-2-3. Yes them 3. Obviously a coincidence but my point is that they could have been discussing tactics to allow them to come 1-2-3. Also why do the jockeys wear the owners silks. Shouldn't the silks be of the same colour with like Godolphins 1 ,2nd and 3 rd colours. Plus where does the loyalty of the owner lie ? Is he in it for the prizemoney or is he supporting Britain dispite lending his horse to the opposing team ?? Who knows.

  7. Re: 2012 fixtures are capped Don't really know the ins and outs to this debate. But personally i would like to see more uniformity in the number of meetings each day. On some days there are 2 meetings yet on some saturdays there are 8 ,9 or 10. 12 on Bank hiolidays .Can they not balance it out and have between 4 and 6 every single day ? Obviously there are many things to consider and often we hear theres far too much low grade racing which i agree with , but if there was a reduction how will these horses get a run ?

  8. Re: howard johnson I think if they are going to give him a ban then they should disband his training operation.Barring the trainer can on occassions be meaningless. Take for example Karl Burke given a 12 month ban for corruption. During that time his horses were transfered to A Jarvis , a family member. After the ban expired he does not reapply , instead his wife gets a license. Can anybody tell me if there is any difference between the operation under Mrs Burke and when it was under Karl's name. In my opinion no , just different name .....farce. Jeff Pearce get a 3 year ban , now his wife trains. Is there any differnece ? Paul Blockley's ban has recently ended , says he has no intention of training. At the same time he splits with his girlfriend. Surprise surprise his ex girlfriend starts training horses ! She's called Jo something , only been training a few weeks , Tabby you should know her surname. Reminds me of the politician Jaqqui Smith a few years back. It was discovered her husband had claimed porno films on her expenses account. The day the story broke it turns out they had separated , career salvaged ? Back to the OP , ban the trainer , disband the stable. Otherwise he will be puppet master in the shadows.

  9. Re: Name of a horse needed....

I remember a long time ago (back in the 70's) when I was on holiday at Pontin's they used to have a race night for a couple of hours' date=' using 16mm films of races from Hollywood Park iirc, and they were in sealed tins and about 2 mins before the race, a bluecoat had a box containing the films and asked one of the punters to choose 1, using the procedure you mention sometimes they had names but on the tote board they used numbers,[/quote'] Lol , thats exactly what i was refering to. Worked at Butlins many many years ago but they had Redcoats. I cleaned out their bookies a few times over the years !
  10. Re: Name of a horse needed.... Persian Punch was one of his better 2 milers who began his long career in the 90s , i know he won a few times at Sandown and often by a very short margin , think he beat a subsequent or former Ascot Gold Cup winner Celeric at Sandown. Not sure about the price , but the prices offered on some pre recorded races do not reflect the actual SP .

  11. Re: Shergar Cup Thread Another of my dislikes is the use of non racing sports personalities as team captains. I think they used Kevin keegan once and Sven Goran Eriksson (although he withdrew from the event 2 days prior to the start). They bring nothing to racing. I don't think non racing football fans will be converted to the sport because a football mangager is a mickey mouse team captain for an afternoon. The original idea was much better Middle East vs Britain , captained by the big owners from each side. Robert Sangster and Sheikh Mohammed. The horses were owned by the opposing sides. Now they are owned by Tom , Dick and Harry. Why not British side , all British connections ie owner , jockey and trainer. same for the other repective sides. The recent incarnations don't have that international feel , when the overseas jockeys are riding British owned and trained handicappers.

  12. Re: When Jockeys Drop Their Hands............... From 1994/5 Seb Sanders (3 or 5lb) , was on a massive odds on shot at Lingfield ( AW ) called Battleship Bruce and the same scenario , miles clear at the furlong pole looking over his shoulders , on the bit only to get caught on the line by Alex Greaves !!!!! ( female jockey , who in 1997 won the Gr1 Nunthorpe ) Didn't have a massive bet but it sunk my double. Didn't like Seb Sanders for a while , he foiled a nationwide treble when winning the 1997 July Cup on a 50/1 shot by beating top sprinter Royal Applause. The treble was organised by a tipping service which the 2 other runners won ! Would of paid off my credit card and fed my family for 6 months had Seb Sanders not won.

  13. Re: When Jockeys Drop Their Hands............... We have all been victims to this many many times over , even the best of jockeys do it time after time. We just have to take it on the chin and move on. I'd be a lot lot richer if it wasn't for jockeys dropping their hands on occassions. One bet that still haunts me is from 1996 . It was Lingfield on a Saturday evening Willie Carson was down to ride one of Hamdan's called Kamari , priced at around evens , anyway i had a humongous monster sized bet . Everybody and their dogs knew about it. From the halfway stage he was hard on the steel looking as if he would win by 20 lengths , at the furlong pole he was miles clear , just trotting and just before the line he saw Dane O'Neil ( apprentice back then )flashing past , and yes you guessed it ..............lost. Think Willie got the max ban for it . I was broke for a while afterwards , i didn't have a penny on the horse the next time it ran , think it was at unbackable odds something like 1/66 or 1/50 and it won by literally half a track !

  14. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

Im sorry but Richard Hills is a long way from being one of the best jockeys areound. Id have both of them above him. Just because he rides for a big owner doesnt make him any good. Atjebi rides for a big owner but he is one of the worse pro jockeys I have ever seen. What are the chances Hills has to ride at Newmarket or Haydock anyway?
You are entitled to your opinion which is OK with me. In regards to Ajtebi , the owner has given him an opportunity to represent Dubai , which does not have a long history of thoroughbread racing. Everybody deserves an opportunity ,just like the all female card the other evening ,so have no problems with Ajtebi. I don't hold any grudges towards jockeys who have let me down when i've backed them , only the ones where they've applied the handbrake or been lazy , but i'll save that for one of Tabby's future threads.
  15. Re: Funny Things Commentators Dont Mean To Say One which made me cringe was the 1997 King George Chase , McCoy on Challenger Du Luc was travelling on the bit a furlong out looking likely to beat See More Buisiness. As Simon Holt was beginning to express this in his jovial manner the horse found nothing , by the time he finished his sentence 10 seconds later he had to ad lib "....but what will he find....." , obvious to us viewers he hash of it.Not his finest hour.

  16. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

You must be about the only person I know who thinks Richard Hills is a good jockey. How many outside rides does he get? Very few is the answer He has only had just over 200 rides this year' date=' that hardly screams a jockey in demand. Also he has been going a lot longer than the other three jockeys so to say he has won more bigger races than them is a bit misleading. What was the last big race he won?[/quote'] You don't understand the nature of his job. He rides for the biggest owner in the country , close to 200 horses year after year. There will be dozens of entries at most racecourses every week.So at any given moment in time he will have potential rides at most racecourses and unless there is a major race in the next few days he will not know where he'll be. This prevents other trainers booking him days in advance. It has absolutely nothing to do with not being in demand.Hope you have a better understanding now. Saying all that , he is not one of my favorite jockeys , i am only aknowledging him as one of best jockeys in todays weighing room , therefore more fitting to represent the best of British as oposed to Jim Crowley , no big race successes. Off the top of my head i know him and his owner had a golden 2009 with numerous Gr1s. You can take a look on the Racing Post and look at his achievements i'm sure it will be quite lengthy , however it does not include all pattern race successes.
  17. Re: Shergar Cup Thread If there are 12 jockeys why do they have 10 horses ? Not sure about this years format. Surely for an even format they should all have a ride each with reserve horses should there be any late withdrawals. What use is 2 or more jockeys on the bench ? Can any of the Shergar Cup Fan Club answer my question ?

  18. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

I know who Shergar was........So it is the name of the event that bothers you more than anything else about the day
No , it is one of the many things i dislike about. The Alan Sugar Second Hand Book Shop. Virgin Fruit and Veg market Stall Rolls Royce Skateboards All inappropiate names for the products.
