  1. Re: Becoming A Winning Player

The one that disapointed was Farraajj the first of those runners who didn't get the best of rides by racing in the middle of the track whilst the winner raced by the rail.I think they wanted that one because they kicked off stable jockey N Callan and put Dettori on and also it was for Sheikh Ahmed his main owner.
R Varian again kicked off stable jockey N Callan who was present at Longchamp in favour of top jock L Dettori ( who had won his 500th group winner !!! earlier in the day ) to win the Gr1 Prix de l'Opera for main patron Sheikh Ahmed. This was one win they really wanted. Watch out when for R Varian when he replaces N Callan for a top jockey , may be an edge for winning players.
  2. Re: Paul Hanagan worst Champion Jockey for years ?

You're chatting rubbish mate, I can only come to the conclusion he's just collared one of the horses you've backed on the line or has lost out in a photo on one you've backed and you are cursing. He's ridden more winners than anyone else so he DESERVES to be called the champ. All jockeys know the rules at the start of the year and the title is not decided on the number of Group races won nor on prize money, its on the raw number of winners winners. If you ride more winners than your fellow jockeys then you deserve to be crowned champion. Its like looking at the Premier League table, seeing Man Utd top of the table with the highest number of points and saying, actually, they didn't deserve that. Liverpool took points in high profile fixtures at Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal, and even though they've accrued less points than Man Utd, they deserve it - no one would be so stupid to think that and the same is true with the jockeys championship. Hanagan has the dedication to grind out a living at the smaller meetings and is merely playing the system to his advantage, he should be PRAISED, not mocked. There are certain prima donnas in the weighing room that can't be bothered turning up for low key rides at minor meetings, if anyone, they are the ones that need berating - for messing connections around at the last minute.
I'm not that shallow to curse him because i've lost money on one of his rides , I'm merely debating whether he deserves to be recognised as a champion. Former champions include Piggott , Eddery , Fallon , Dettori , Spencer and Moore.I'm suggesting that Hanagan is not worthy to be in that list of great jockeys at this moment in time. For a long time the championship is based on the amount of winners and Hanagan looks to be close to winning his second championship. However a lot of these wins have been in sellers and claimers. When talking about champions you immediately think about big races like the Classics , Arc , Breeders Cup etc but you hardly see Hanagan's name associated with these types of races. When there is a big ride available , Hanagan rarely seems to be considered. He is probably not even in the top 5 when trainers are looking for a top jock.In the Derby , Ed Dunlop and AP O'Brien didn't consider Hanagan when they were searching for a top jock at the last minute.Even Sir M Stoute when looking for a top jock for Sea Moon in the St Ledger had to go overseas in the form of O Peslier despite using Hanagan in a few handicap jobs this season.
  3. Re: Paul Hanagan worst Champion Jockey for years ? I dont say he's a bad jockey , i do mention that in my OP. I am saying he's one of the worst champion jockeys in recent years. I'm not a fan of Spencer , they are of a similar age ,however i do acknowledge that he's a far superior jockey who's won miles more decent races than Hanagan. For every one decent race Hanagan has won Spencer has won over ten times more. The same goes for Sanders.

  4. Its a view i've held for a long time , i'm not saying he's a bad jockey in any way. What i am saying is that he is not worthy of being called Champion Jockey. Look at the list of previous jockeys and i'm sure you'll agree he's not in the same league as previous champions such as Dettori , Eddery , Roberts ,Piggott, Fallon , Darley ? , Spencer....... From memory i don't think he's even won a classic or even a Gr1 in this country.Previous champions get booked on group horses whenever theres a Gr1 meeting however with Hanagan he prefers to ride at Catterick or Redcar when these meetings are on. Today at the Arc meeting theres a plethora of Uk based jockeys over in Paris even the likes of T Eaves and J Crowley , wheres Hanagan ? Saying that i do beleive that he will turn out to be a top jockey in the comming years. If i recall correctly K Fallon was a similar age before he got his break with H Cecil before that he was a nobody pulling off handbrake jobs in low class handicaps for Emma Spencer's mum.

  5. Re: Becoming A Winning Player In the last few days R Varian has had 4 winners from 11 runners SPs @ 10/3 , 4/1 , 11/1, and 14/1. A massive level stakes profit ! Well done to thoses who made a few quid. Conversley , D McCain's 2 runners at Market Rasen were both unplaced , they were both big field listed races so they were quite competitive and that was reflected in the prices.Hey , thats racing. Still made a nice profit by betting blind the last few days.

  6. Re: Backing odds on shots long term - the quick way to the poor house?

I don't know what happens more on this forum' date=' Erhaab poking Wizzkid about backing odds on shots or Ginge, in his heyday, banging on about value![/quote'] I'm not poking fun at Wizzkid , i myself back a lot of short priced favs.I'm genuinely interested in his thread and wish him all the best. On occassions i do sound sarcastic or critical but that is not the intention , its my fault for not articulating myself properly.
  7. Re: Backing odds on shots long term - the quick way to the poor house? Whizzkid , any chance of doing an update on the "short priced favs" thread its been well over a month since your last one. I did say i would refrain from posting on your thread after you threw a wobbly at me. I have been following your thread with great interest , bit disappointed the bet frequency had dramatically dropped , keep up the good work. Good luck.

  8. Re: Michael Jarvis RIP Sad news. I remember backing his first domestic classic winner Ameerat courtesy of Pricewise.

Roger Varian couldn't have had better man to educate him.
Don't understand why people say these sort of things. Are you suggesting other trainers are not as good at educating youngsters?
  9. Re: RIP!!!!!! I liked the guy and always loved seeing him interviewed on Grand National day , his final one last year was a cracker when he something like " ...if i ever meet Donald Jrs father i'll congratulate him..." Saying that apart from his Aintree successes he was pretty avarage and i find that theres a lot of back patting around here. Not saying he doesn't deserve it , but even when somebody selects a winning long odds on favorite they get pats on the back. Strange ?

  10. I am disappointed to see the inclusion of Graham Bradley on the opening day of the meeting in the legends race. This guy in my opinion has pulled off countless handbrake jobs throughout his career even during his peak in the 80s. One time i backed a horse called Man Mood in a 2 horse race and he did a number on the odds on fav by pulling it up !! I don't mind losing , all i want is a fair and honest effort which in my opinion i did not get. I'm sure you know contraversy has followed him all his career , culminating in a 5 year ban which recently ended. He was also investigated in a Panorama programme on the topic of corruption. In my opinion he is a crook and his place should be given to a more deserving honest jockey of which there are plenty. What next ? , welcome back Fergal Lynch all is forgiven .

  11. Re: The Aldermoor Gamble The S Williams stable is notorius for pullng off gambles. When following his horses you cannot solely rely on form , you need inside info. A horse of his may be well handicapped but you need to know whether it is primed to win. His stable is favoured by some who run tipping services.About 10 years ago i followed a service and they had a 2 year old called Prince Cyrano who landed a major punt in a big race. Patrick Veitch who ran a service at the same time landed a monster coup with once raced ( last place ) Exponential.I was in the bookies and i watched it go from 100/1 to 8/1. I would have backed it too had i not backed the Hanagan/Fahey combo.

  12. Re: jockey importance?

How can you call somewhen a bent jockey when you're speaking out of your pocket? Jimmy Quinn has some great stats on AW for several trainers. That's like me saying McCoy is bent just because I never back the rides he wins! The only way to go about things is to research.
I didn't specifically say Jimmy Quinn was bent , i didn't give a reason why i don't back his rides. Just because he has an OK record on the AW tracks doesn't actually prove anything. You can't say i'm speaking out of my pockets because you don't know the reasoning. To suggest somebody would think a jockey is bent because they always lose when they back them is laughable and niave.I've been punting on horses for over 20 years and i know for certain there are / has been bent jockeys. My original post was to offer betting hints not to debate bent jockeys.Addpea has offered a very recent example of what i was suggesting.
  13. Re: jockey importance? Also avoid jockeys who may be bent. For many many years i have refused to back J Quinn's mounts. If i fancy a horse which he is riding i will simply not have a bet.On a few occassions it has cost me a winner but on the whole i think i have saved money by not touching his rides.

  14. Re: jockey importance? I have to agree with everything you say Trotter. I wish to add , when betting EW or place only / placepots ,avoid jockeys who don't ride out for places. With some jockeys its all or nothing on occassions , when they have no chance of the win then they give up altogether. These jockeys include Pat Eddery , Norman Williamson and of the current crop Richard Hughes.Last year when there was a chance of being champion jockey Richard Hughes gave it everything ,riding out finishes and even accepting a full book of rides for the final few weeks of the season. This year with no apparent chance he riding a lot differently and taking a lot less mounts.
