  1. Uruguay (if Cavani/Suazez are fit) are way too big to not have a look at. France played well v Argentina but let's just remember how utterly abject this Argentina side is.

I also think Sweden have a decent shot v England. They are a tough team to break down and extremely dynamic on the break in transition. They can also match England at set plays which appears to be there only real tactic. I still don't rate the English CM pairing either.

I'm on Uruguay to top the group at 5/6 and separately 5/1 to win all their group games.

Uruguay are very strong with some world class players, Cavani hitting 10 goals in qualification and finishing 2nd behind Brazil and ahead of Argentina.

Most worried about the opening game vs Egypt and wouldn't be surprised to see a 0 - 0 or 1 - 1 given the opening games being tight affairs. At 5/1 with Saudi Arabia almost being a gimme it seems a decent price for them to win all 3.

Never in doubt (apart from Egypt).

    Well played.

  3. Madness to think that a one goal win for Sweden and a two goal win for Germany will send Mexico home. Would be extremely harsh.

If I had to predict it I would be inclined to back the draw and you’d imagine it’ll be a low scoring affair. I think Mexico are rightly slight favourites due to their performances so far but if Sweden get their noses in front I’d fancy them to hang on. I just don’t see Mexico winning all three group games.

  4. I agree on Peru. I've taken them to win. 2.5 is a juicy price. The Aussies are a committed but very average outfit who fail to play through their best player Tom Rogic, the only guy in the squad capable of doing something sublime.

This World Cup is a huge deal for Peru and I'd have no reason to doubt their commitment here. They'll be backed by a big support and winning a match will still be a huge incentive for them.

They haven't played badly either, perhaps just a little naive and lacking in composure in the final 3rd.

@Icongene Tunisia are no mugs, they gave Spain the runaround just before the WC started and have 6 players that could have played for France (squad though).

Anyway, England were quick and tasty at times and the system is one the players seem to know, but still very very shaky at the back. Hard to make any real concise opinion how good England are, but a lot of improvement is needed.

Panama will get smacked silly I know that much, way too much direct pace for them to handle.

Had they not been given a soft penalty it would have ended in a right comfortable walk in the park for England. A 2nd goal in the opening spell and they'd have been on the end of a Saudi Arabiaesque hammering.

Tunisia had the goal scoring threat of Scotland playing 4-6-0 under Craig Levein.

It's easy to say in hindsight but I was very tempted to back the draw but just felt Portugal wouldn't have enough. To be fair, they needed a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick that consisted of two set-pieces and a David De Gea error. How often does that all happen in one game?! Got to love football but it's a cruel mistress sometimes. A lot to ponder for the second round of games.

I had a tasty little draw double on both Morocco/Iran and Spain/Portugal.

    Iranians:(

  7. Agree with Pep.

Really fancy Croatia here especially given the Argies result. Wouldn't surprise me if they win the group.

I just don't see it with Nigeria. Nothing to suggest they will get more than a draw here if lucky. Croatia can take control of the group with a win and fancy them to.

Took Croatia with a boost of WilliamHill @1.75.

  8. First bet of the tourney.

    Saudis +2 @ 1.60

Russia are weak, and the Saudis are going to keep it tight as fcuk at the back.

If Russia go 1 goal up they will close up and sit tight defensively so just cannot see them chasing goals here.

Any win will do for Russia and in any of the 3 games. Performances mean bugger all. If the Saudi's score Russia probably wont have an answ er so fancy this bet to come in.

I think the Liverpool Salah will be a man to watch on the Egyptian side? Egypt will not go out like that. I think the table will end like this

    Team     P     W    D.  L    PTS

    Russia  3.       2   1.    0      7

    Egypt.   3.       1     2    0.     5

    Uruguay 3.     1.     2    0.    5

    Saudi A.  3.     0      1.   2.    1

    No chance.

The thing is, Uruguay are not free scorers and these group games can be really tight even against poor teams. To win 3 group games at a World Cup takes real ruthlessness and im not sure I see it in them. They'll top the group but probably not on 9 points.

It wouldn't shock me at all to see them draw v Russia or Egypt.

Also there's a chance the 3rd game is a dead rubber that they don't have to win.
