I really like Fritz as a bloke but please can he just lose already. Catarina was 2 service holds (or a hold and a break - and he had broken Fritz A LOT) away from dumping him out before he crumbled

    uhm, Cilic to beat Fritz.
If you are unsure why Cilic is odds on, then perhaps watch Fritz vs. Catarina.

    Sigh Alize.
Busca actually did play very well in sets 2-3. She adjusted well. Cornet was atrocious and inconsistent, threw some tantrums, and generally failed to keep the ball within the court during rallies.
Fun couple of days; the Baez collapse, then Bouzkova losing to Stephens, then get Alize'd to cap off the week.

Gabriel Decamps was a really good hardcourt junior player. Had 81% win rate on hard and lost only 8 matches and won over 80. Rankad no.17 january 2017.
Come on guys watch out for this guy. Don't go against him if he's on hardcourt.
  10. Thanks

iirc, her sister presumably, Linda - gave Alize Cornet a really rough ride last year, and eventually won due to Alize retiring through injury. She's a similar age I believe.

oh look, it’s the same abusive, ignorant, small minded nonsense, different tournament.
I stopped posting my thoughts on here because of the attacks at Sabalenka for being “fat”, the non-stop “Barty is overrated”, “Barty can’t serve” bs, and the abuse hurled at players because they lost a match YOU lost money betting on.
grow up, grow a brain. sick of seeing this crap.

Barty has one of the best serves of the circuit (if not the best). She can serve wherever she wants at high speed and she varies it so much. But let's see some stats.
    2021: Rank 1 in Aces (297 in 46 matches)
               Rank 1 in 1st Serves Points % (74.9%)
Rank 1 in Serve Points Won % (64.2%)
Rank 2 in Service Games Won % (81.3%). Actually, she's the number 1, too (Olmos is the number 1 but she only has
               played 1 WTA match...)
2020: Not relevant because she only played 14 matches
2019: Rank 3 in Aces (409 in 64 matches). Only behind Karo and Bertens.
Rank 9 in 1st Serve Points % (72.8%). Actually, she was the 4th best player. Only behind Serena and the Pliskova twins.
Rank 3 in Serve Points Won % (63.7%). Actually, she was the 2nd best player. Only behind Serena.
Rank 4 in Service Games Won % (79.7%). Actually, she was the 2nd best player. Only behind Serena.
2018: Rank 4 in Aces (297 in 61 matches). Only behind Goerges, Karo and Bertens
Rank 7 in 1st Serve Points (71.6%). Actually, she was the 3rd best player. Only behind Serena and Goerges.
Rank 4 in Serve Points Won % (63.5%). Actually, she was the 2nd best player. Only behind Serena.
Rank 4 in Service Games Won % (78.7%). Actually, she was the 2nd best. Only behind Serena.
In 2021, she has been the number 1 on everything, so we can say she's the best one right now.

The problem for Sabalenka that manifested against Pliskova is the same problem she's always had - namely she doesn't seem to have the ability to do anything other than hit the ball hard. Against most players, and on good days of which she has plenty, she blasts through whoever she's playing against and is able to rack up win after win and because she's winning the deficiencies in her game are masked over. But they've always been there. Plan A is hit the ball hard, Plan B is hit the ball harder and she doesn't seem to be able to adapt and adjust her game during a match.
The best example of that against Pliskova was being in control of about 4 or 5 rallies and being in a position half-way up the court to put the ball away and win the point, and she kept going to Pliskova's forehand and losing the point. Someone like Barty might play that shot once, maybe twice, but come the third time they'd be going down the backhand side having realised that going to the forehand wasn't working. If she's to take her game to the next level, she really needs to work on tactics and point construction and also awareness of how a match is going so that she can try to change what she's doing if it isn't working.

It's tough. We look at their H2Hs, and recent performances stick in our minds (KP's 6-0 6-0 double-bagel defeat at Rome for one). I did also think Sabalenka would win this one, albeit in a closer match.
Sabalenka served well for most of the match and did actually save 8/10 BPs, but otherwise looked stuck for answers vs. Pliskova's serve. She just couldn't return the ball. KP was calmness personified, and didn't make costly errors. It could and perhaps should have been 2-0 Pliskova though, which the number of chances to break that she had. Sabalenka created just one break point across the 3 sets!
The problem with comparing the ''Legends'' of women's tennis to today's top 10 crop is that you're thinking of them in their absolute prime, vs. current players who aren't necessarily in their prime right now. Coco Gauff has a very, very high ceiling, as does Iga Swiatek. They're 17 and 20 respectively. Barty is an incredible player and is only 25. Osaka (23) and Halep are great players, but are not currently at their best for obvious reasons.
imo today the overall skill level is a lot more evened out across the top 20-30 players than 15+ years ago, meaning that we do tend to see a lot of different players running deep in Grand Slams/winning silverware. There's no one player in the women's game who's absolutely crushing and winning 3-4 grand slams each year like Serena, Venus, Graff, Seles, Martina etc once did. Maybe in a few years someone will emerge and be that crusher, but who knows.

some (all) of your takes are genuinely horrific.
she's the world number one for a reason. Luck didn't get her there. Graft did, and is why she'll be a multiple GS winner before long. I suppose she got lucky today too?

''Serve not particularly good?'' Who are you even comparing her too, Berrettini? Sampras? Serena? 8 aces today (to Kerber's zero) and a 1st points won of 88%.
I watched both matches live (at center court) today. Ash deservedly won, by playing an outstanding all-round game. Kerber played well also btw, but Barty was just too good for too much of the match. Kerber had to work sooo hard to win points off Ash.
Sabalenka on the other hand... has a very big serve, as you mentioned. That's kind of it though. She can't control a rally. She doesn't move well, and today she got massively outplayed, and didn't have an answer. Why? Because her game is built around keeping points as short as possible. When a point goes over 3 shots she can't really compete because she either over-hits, or the ball gets smashed into the net.
it's fair to also say, this is as good as I've ever seen Karolina Pliskova play.

Isn't Linette quite prone to losing matches from winning positions? Cirstea, Jabeur, Kvitova all spring to mind in past couple of months.
Anyway lets all sit back and enjoy the tennis, as Viktorija Golubic somehow wins Wimbledon.

Well, Federer's preferential treatment might just get him a chance against Medvedev, who'll have to play three days straight now. I watched him against Mannarino and the Frenchman could've won there without the injury, Federer wasn't dealing with the pressure at all. Caught a good break there and has improved, but it shouldn't be enough to beat Medvedev, right? With Rublev folding against Fucsovics today, Djokovic has been handed things on the platter as well. Fucsovics in the Qs and Shapovalov/Khachanov in the semis, two players that can't handle the pressure.
