This is what I do. I do the ratings then head over to ATR and look at the race cards where it tells you whether they have won on going or in that class. I now avoid class 5&6 as I don’t think you can trust the horses to produce consistent form. It also narrows down races which is good imo. It’s a cracking system for giving you the basics, and horse racing is still based on the basics. I rated 6 races at York today and 3 won, so 50% strike rate with Fine Form ratings. I just picked the wrong ones to bet on. What I’ve found with Fine Form ratings since I’ve been looking into it , is that big odds run well, so definitely don’t be put off by price.

If I remember correctly the original system/ rating needed 11 cd to qualify as a 13 pointer . It's pretty basic but a good starting point , I like lto winners myself . Most bookie sites have indicators, I use sky , just tick winner lto and cd and the list pops up . Few seconds and you have the basic qualifiers.  Any running in the same class ( any class) within the last 5 days go top of the list . Any longer than 5 days you could click on its latest win and see if the 2nd and 3rd have done anything since ,if one of them has preferably won it's good form so the selection goes on the shortlist.  Another aid is b365 , find the race , click the selection and watch the video , if you see its won easily , on the list , if its scrambled home with 2 or 3 others within say half a length , omit from the list . Do you see you have used the basic criteria and quickly and easily narrowed them down to a manageable number .

This may sound patronising but it's not meant to I actually do it myself for a bit of interest when the racing is on tv . If you are just a recreational punter on Saturdays or whenever it's on TV Quite simply go on pp site or Google jason weaver tips . He usually has one in each race , take them all and do doubles , just doubles no more no less. Hes never far away and most weeks you will show a good profit for small outlay .( today just the one winner so a loss but last week he had 5 winners including a 25/1 so big profit)

All a matter of choice but the main thing is have a plan and stick to it . Follow the rules you decide on ( write the rules down ) and dont omit something just because of the price . Make a spreadsheet, log your bets, price and  P&L , if you want to add columns like class, age , type of race distance or anything you think is relevant,  after a while you will see instantly which areas you are winning and where isn't so good . It may all sound a lot of work but actually after a while it takes no time at all. I update mine every evening with a brew.

    Good luck whatever you do

Each to their own TE but you shouldn't let the price rule your stakes too much in my opinion.

I get it that if a horse is 25/1 you may 'not need' to have much on but I see no difference in backing a 4/5 shot or 4/1 shot, i'd have the same on.

Just my opinion, not saying i'm right:ok

I don't believe taking a break helps me, i need to be watching and taking an interest all the time to keep up. I may reduce stakes a tad or maybe look for a 'safer' bet or EW bet to build the confidence back up . Thats my way of handling a poor run. We all have them.
I thinks its also important to make hay when your luck changes too.

    :ok

Have to agree with BH on both counts , if you have a selection,  you chose it because you believe it can win whatever price it is is irrelevant in my opinion.  If it's a big price I may check again but ultimately it will be a standard bet or nothing.

As far as losing runs go, we all have them but i believe if you are confident in your selection process there shouldn't be a problem. A sufficient bank is the key , I can go days without a winner ( as you can see with this months naps table ) but I have confidence with what I do, its stood me in good stead so why tinker . Have confidence  . Another interesting point is many get too emotional about losing,  if you have made selections for that day and they lose  that should be it not scampering about for ' frankie's good thing in the next will get my money back ' or ' lay x that's easy money '  or  tinkering , 'well if I do this from now on this should happen ' if I leave out class xyz I can do this . There is a winner of every race , Stick to the plan but whatever you do dont bet with money you cant afford to lose and dont bet with scared money either.  Good luck all

  4. Dear Dramatista owner,

Dramatista runs today at Catterick and Ben Curtis takes the ride.

Dramatista ran very well last time out and probably just ran into a horse who was destined for black type races when finishing 2nd.

The ground at Hamilton was on the soft side of good and today's ground is on the firm side of good which isn't ideal. I have spoken with Roger's vet re the potential for an injury today and he assures me that now she has a few runs under belt, the risk of injury is no higher than any othjer horse.

I've spoken to another vet for a 2nd opinion, and he told me that the risk is no greater on this ground compared to soft ground but there is a higher risk generally due to her previous injury. So nobody I've spoken too thinks the ground itself represents an increased risk.

Karl tells me his filly showed speed last year when in training and is working okay going into today but I suspect it will need the run over this course and distance which favours horses who have experience.

The favourite hasn't run yet this year so could miss the break or be keen in the early stages and I would much rather take on one horse like her than several 75 rated horses who have shown form this year.

Catterick tends to suit front runners and given our draw I expect us to be in the first two in early stages of the race.

I expect us to finish in the first two today and at 3/1 I think we are overpriced.

  5. In years past, Ladbrokes was the go to site for potential winners. Whenever they were shortest in the market especially one of the top five , people took notice .

Almost every Saturday punters heard John McCririck shouting after a well backed horse wins ,Ladbrokes the magic sign they knew ,they only went xx this morning .

Not sure they command the same respect these days but they have always been a law upon themselves anyway .

  6. Few coming up on the tracker .

    12.25 Y  La Trinidad  11/2

    12.45 N Highland Dress 11/4

    12.55 Y  Cockalurum 8/1

    13.30 Y Daawy  10/1

    15.00 N Yazaman  6/1

    15.35 N Merras 4/1

    16.50 Y Solo Saxophone 2/1

Few too many so just doing

    21 x £1 doubles for interest

The nap is the frustrating , follow over a cliff Edinburgh Castle in the 16.50   ew 5/1  .
