  1. Good evening all. Yesterday was tough to take with Ghaly and Mr Yeats both going closest to winning their respective races. We go again today with the selections from Worcester, Kempton, Bath and Thirsk. Hopefully a bit more luck on our side. TK NAP 3-00 Worcester Rookie Trainer made the most of a return to hurdles last time when beating Nelson’s Rock by two lengths over this course and distance. He cut no mustard when given three spins over fences prior to that and clearly relished the smaller obstacles. Despite being raised five pounds by the handicapper for that success, Neil Mulholland clearly has him in good heart and no reason to think he cannot run well again. Kevin Brogan keeps the ride on the eight-year-old and with the ground still on the good side, the pair look a force to be reckoned with. Treble 6-00 Kempton Eternal Pearl looks to have been given a decent chance to finally shed her maiden status at the fourth attempt. The daughter of Frankel was a beaten favourite at Newbury last time, however she was not disgraced on that occasion. Prior to that she was only narrowly denied in a Listed race at Goodwood when beaten by Sea Silk Road. Without a shadow of a doubt she brings the best form to the table here and she should prove too tough for the opposition. 6-30 Kempton Dubai Welcome was fancied to run well despite twenty months off the track at Kempton 4 weeks ago. He proved that he retained all of his ability as he finished a good second to Pearl Beach. The five-year-old is still far from exposed having only had a handful of runs in his career and there is surely more to come from the son of Dubawi. Ray Dawson has a 36% strike rate when riding for Saeed Bin Suroor and the pair look certain to go close. Dubai Welcome has run well around here in the past and he can give all of his rivals a bloody nose here. 7-50 Bath Tribuna Uffizi looked to be an unlucky loser when attempting to supplement his recent win at Windsor when lining up at Leicester just a couple of weeks later. He endured a troubled passage and lost out by the narrowest of margins to Thunder Flash. George Scott has found a race filled with rivals who are terribly out of sorts and who have already endured a somewhat disappointing season. There is still the possibility of further improvement from this four-year-old gelding and no surprise if he finds the winning habit once again. Singles 2-20 Thirsk Photograph looked as though he was running back into some sort of form when last seen out at Ripon a fortnight ago. He is beginning to look dangerously well handicapped and now takes another step down in grade. Despite top weight, unlike most of rivals these he at least hinted that the spark still flickered and Declan Carroll will be hoping that Harrison Shaw can re-ignite the enthusiasm of his five-year-old. This is low grade stuff and it may not take much winning, so he has to be of serious interest. 2-50 Thirsk Brazen Idol was unfortunate not to win at Wolverhampton last week and was only touched off by the narrowest of margins. Despite fluffing his lines when slow to break, if getting away on terms today he ought to prove a tough nut to crack. He gets in near the foot of the handicap and now has the assistance of Cieren Fallon in the saddle. Not many of these are in any sort of form and if repeating the same sort of efforts, he has been showing on recent starts, he ought to go very close here. 4-10 Worcester Jessica Rabbit returned to winning ways in impressive fashion over two-and-a-half miles at Uttoxeter two weeks ago and a six-pound rise for that win may not be enough to stop the eight-year-old this afternoon. That most recent run came following a seven-month lay-off and she has to command respect with her yard in such excellent form. She has absolutely no issues with the trip or the good ground and young Liam Harrison has been called upon to ride as he can take a useful three pounds off her back. Likely to go extremely well. 7-30 Kempton Moel Arthur has already shown his appreciation for this type of surface as he showed when winning at Lingfield back in February. He was short of room at a crucial stage but still posted a career-best effort when runner-up at Sandown last time when chasing home High Wells. He commands plenty of respect back on the all-weather. 8-00 Kempton Captain’s Bar finds himself in this low grade affair carrying top weight. He capitalised on the drop in grade when winning a six-runner seller at Lingfield over six furlongs just under a fortnight ago. He was value for extra having covered more ground than most on that occasion and Richard Hannon now calls upon a seven-pound claimer to alleviate some of the pressure. Many of his rivals here are not in the best of form and no surprise to see him take full advantage.

  2. Quite how Bet365 made The Big Sting a 6/1 shot for the 1.30 at Worcester this afternoon I don't know. He's 6/8 in points the season just gone so that alone made me think he would be a fairly short priced favourite. Then when you look at the fact in his last one he stuffed Port O'Clock by 20L and that one landed an Exeter hunter chase in April and went very close to landing a handicap at Worcester a couple of weeks ago off 100. The Big Sting has a mark of 90 for this race so that form alone gives him a massive chance here. His other form is good and even the 2 2nds are very good pieces of form in the context of this race. One of the horses who beat him was Indirocco who we know ran well in a couple of hunter chases this year. He could have been found a weaker race to be fair as a few of these come here in good form and the main danger for me is probably Ballymilan who looks like there could well be more to come having won his last two. Basically though if The Big Sting shows his pointing form then he really ought to win and I still think the price is value. The Big Sting @ 7/4 with Bet365, Paddy Power, Betfair and BetVictor

    Win Backing System

Here's my take for what it's worth, as an only occasional racing punter and someone who only follows other people's selections on an ad hoc basis. (I don't have the time or inclination to follow anyone else where it entails backing several selections on a daily basis but I'm interested in seeing how any thread does where someone is actually willing to run it for a decent number of bets.) Selections - credit where it's due, the thread's off to a decent start and the selections would appear to be profitable regardless of any "noise" relating to commission or the staking plan. I'd like to see where we are after 10 cycles in terms of a worthwhile sample size. Commission - I have to agree with the consensus here, the results should categorically factor in commission at 2% which is the minimum most people are likely to pay. I'd suggest that should be done from now on. BSP is a perfectly valid measure for the P/L but it makes no sense to then choose to ignore commission, especially when the staking plan has such specific 50% and 100% targets. The results would have so much more "real world" validity just for the simple step of making the appropriate deduction. Staking plan - I'm not sure of the merits of such a specific approach to staking but it obviously introduces an element of chance when it comes to how much you end up winning or losing on a particularly good or bad day. I think it's valid to expect a comparison to level stakes. What I'd like to see is, at the end of each cycle, a statement of how much the average stake would have returned if applied as a flat stake to every bet, to compare to the return from the staking plan, e.g. if the average stake is £45 would you have done better or worse just having £45 on every selection. Surely you would want to know if the staking plan is adding value or not? I'd be interested to see how the first four cycles would have done if you'd just had the average total stake on every selection.

That's a terrific post, Harry. I don't think that you are asking for anything that is too onerous and it would certainly show much greater clarity. Let's hope that the response is positive.

Thanks for the wishes, I'll pass them on! For tomorrow I think Tan to beat Sorribes Tormo at 3.40 with Unibet represents tremendous value, and is all about whether Tan can survive it mentally after that incredible round one win against Serena. If she can, then she has every chance against Sorribes Tormo, who hardly has a good game for grass.

Quieter day today with just one outright, a treble and an acca. For the outright I'm dipping my toe into the WTA with a bet on Swiatek, who played pretty well in the first round considering her lack of grass experience. She should make it through the next few rounds at least and with every match she'll get more comfortable on the surface. Her winning run shows no signs of stopping and as she's been dispatching opponents so comprehensively she can afford not to play as well and she should still be able to win. The treble consists of Alcaraz, Ostapenko and Jabeur. Jabeur should sail through against Kawa, and although Alcaraz and Ostapenko have harder matches I expect them both to progress. Alcaraz's superior return game should be the difference in his match against Griekspoor and Ostapenko should be able to stifle Wickmayer's resurgence unless she has an off day. 30pts Swiatek to win WTA Wimbledon @ 2.67 Betfair Exchange 10pts Alcaraz x Ostapenko x Jabeur @ 1.66 365 10pts Alcaraz x Ostapenko x Jabeur x Otte x Norrie x Dart x Riske x Mertens x Sakkari x Murray x Djokovic x Kerber x Bublik x Sinner @ 10.86 365

  23. Brazen Idol rewarded followers at 11/2 when going in under Cieren Fallon at Thirsk yesterday and Captain's Bar hit the crossbar for each way backers at Kempton. On top of that the treble was only just touched off as Dubai Welcome went down by a length in his race whilst Jessica Rabbit found one too strong. Tomorrow's selections are listed below. Good luck all. TK NAP 2-00 Haydock Sharp Combo got off the mark at the second attempt in a Wolverhampton maiden over seven furlongs last term. He stepped up markedly from his seasonal reappearance to finish runner-up at Windsor just 10 days ago when beaten by Youthful King. The front two pulled well clear of the remainder of their rivals suggesting that there was more to come. He gets in off the same mark here and now taking another step up in trip, he has to be considered despite top weight. TREBLE 1-30 Haydock Storm Chaser improved on her seasonal reappearance and made the most of an ever falling mark by romping home over a mile and six furlongs just a week ago. Unbelievably she escapes a penalty for that wide margin success and if in the same mood has to be considered likely to follow up. The yard continues to be in incredibly good form and Mick Channon has sent out three winners inside the last ten days from only a handful of runners. Silvestre De Sousa replaces Rose Dawes in the saddle and this combination warrants utmost respect. 2-50 Yarmouth Princeville is an exciting newcomer from the Charlie Appleby team and he is well related to the likes of the Molcomb winner Yalta as well as the likes of Branscombe and Honiton. Being a son of Exceed And Excel, he ought to thrive on this speedy going and no surprise if he has been well schooled at home and shows enough to take this on his racecourse debut. The Godolphin handler has a near 25% strike rate when sending horses here and with the yard in such good form, Princeville can make a winning start. 6-36 Epsom Self Praise was a beaten favourite at Newmarket last time but he can be given another chance today. He has shown some fair form in finishing runner-up on his last three starts and Hugo Palmer's colt can deservedly open his account here. Having put in such an eye-catching effort in the Woodcote two starts ago he brings the best form to the table. A few of these rivals have disappointed in the past whilst others have not proven their consistency. He ought to prove hard to beat SINGLES 2-10 Perth Release The Kraken is still looking for a first career win, but has hit the crossbar on two of his last three starts, including when wearing first-time blinkers at Uttoxeter over almost 3 miles last time They are retained here this afternoon and a return to good ground should him in a better light. He put in a solid performance last time and the fact that he pulled some fifteen lengths clear of the third placed Robeam (who has subsequently placed again) indicates he is still on good terms with himself. Brian Hughes has partnered the six-year-old on his last 4 outings and they command respect here. 2-30 Haydock Captain Winters was a fair fourth of eight runners in novice event at this course over six furlongs on his debut just a little over three weeks ago. Having met some trouble in running he looks sure to be much more streetwise this time around. He is sure to benefit from that introduction and his experience of the track ought to give him an added edge. Whilst the yard has been struggling for winners of late, Captain Winters looks a certain improver and no surprise to see him in the winners’ enclosure after this. 3-00 Haydock Skittlebombz is an absolute model of consistency and fully deserves to get off the mark here. He was only just touched off in a seven-furlong handicap at Kempton last month and now has cheekpieces applied for the first time. He raced on this track on what was only his second start last year and ran with great credit behind Global Wisdom then. A return to turf and this track may well see him improve once again. PJ McDonald knows the Hugo Palmer trained three-year-old well and the pair are respected. 3-30 Haydock Lost In Time has certainly lived up to his name prior to his most recent start. His form had taken a nosedive despite a promising juvenile career. He had his first run back from a 213-day absence last time and he looked more like the force of old. The booking of Andrea Atzeni certainly catches the eye and the lightly raced five-year-old can make a brave attempt to put his career back on track. Saeed Bin Suroor clearly feels that the embers still burn inside this son of Dubawi and if putting in a similar run to last time should go very close. 5-20 Newbury Taaqat has shown some good decent form of late suggesting her time may be close at hand. The daughter of Pivotal is still only lightly raced compared to a few of these and it wouldn’t be impossible to suggest that she can improve past them. As a three-year-old she receives weight from all bar one rival and her young jockey’s claim could well give her an added edge. She has had more than a month to get over her recent exertions and looks primed to go well. 7-03 Newbury Tarhib won her first couple of starts as a three-year-old and having had a wind operation, got back on track with her sights lowered when runner-up at Chelmsford a fortnight ago. A tongue tie is applied for the first time today and she now finds herself dropping into Class 4 company. She represents a top yard and has an excellent jockey on board in Jim Crowley so she has to be of interest for an in form combination. 8-40 Newbury Codify is still a maiden but he posted good third place in handicap over the course and distance just three weeks ago. It was a marked improvement from what we saw on his seasonal reappearance at Sandown in May and no surprise to see him take another step forward. It could be significant that Adam Kirby retains the ride and has ridden him previously. He ought to know all there is about the son of Lawman and with the Clive Cox horses starting to run into some form, the duo cannot be discounted from this despite top weight.

Small loss on the day as the treble came in but the acca was sunk by Murray - although even if he'd won Mertens might have sunk it tomorrow. No complaints though - it could have gone down much earlier in the day when Norrie went 2 sets to 1 down against Munar, and it definitely should have gone down this evening when Udvardy had two points on serve to beat Mertens.

10 out of 13 (77%) Americans prevailed yesterday which was good for me (only Querrey, Kudla and Kozlov were defeated). Steve Johnson and Frances Tiafoe already won today and I hope Tommy Paul and Riley Opelka will do so as well. It'll be extremely difficult for John Isner to pull off the upset though. Andy Murray seems to be very focused and sharp. Christian Harrison retired after the 4th game against Oscar Otte but he wouldn't be a factor for the tournament anyway.

Morning guys, the real CzechPunter will unfortunately be unavailable for a while, but I'll take over as his friend for a bit, hopefully it will work out well. Today, I quite like Hontama to beat Parry at 2.30 with William Hill, I think the bookmakers are reading too much into Parry's victory over Kanepi. This is a completely different match-up, however, as Hontama can defend much better than Kanepi and also has some decent form on her side after qualifying. On the men's side, I'm going with Peniston to beat Johnson at 1.71 with William Hill. Johnson was lucky to get past Dimitrov yesterday, and the in-form Peniston will take him out if he isn't sharp, which he hasn't been throughout the grass court season so far.

It was looking like the recovery from yesterday's losses was on when Baez and Tomova won at the start of the day, but it was all downhill from there - with the exception of the four-fold which came in without too much drama. Auger-Aliassime lost to Cressy in four sets and in all honesty was a deserving loser. There's no doubt he's got plenty of talent, but there's definitely something missing between the ears. His key point performance today left a lot to be desired - he couldn't save the only break point he faced in the second set and then double-faulted to lose the third set tie-break. Some of that was to do with the pressure Cressy put him under by holding serve so easily - Cressy wasn't broken all match and only faced one break point - but there's more to it than that as his poor record in tournament finals shows. My two dogs didn't even whimper let alone bark, with both players losing and putting up very little resistance. The end must be near for Lopez, who couldn't even get to a single tie-break and his serve was always his strong point on grass. Schwartzman gave Kozlov all the encouragement in the world and still ended up an easy winner and the 'Brit' double went down not because of Broady who won, but because of Evans who lost in straight sets as a strong favourite. The acca had a few losing legs but the one that really stood out for me as a bad selection with hindsight was Querrey. I shouldn't have gone anywhere near him as he's gone at the game and has been for some time. I thought this tournament would get his juices flowing but not a bit of it and losing to Berankis who is no fan of grass in straight sets is a really poor effort.

  41. What a fight between the 2 June super powers, with 2 wins a piece for McG and muttley. In the end a next best 4th beat a 6th/7th and it's @McG who is crowned our June champion. The final leg multiplier didn't actually change this result although it would have been even closer between them without it. The 3rd podium spot is taken by Rivrd who appropriately had 3 third place finishes this month. Well done to all 3 of you, I'm sure I have your Paypal details already so I'll send those off for payment. We have a spare week this week so if @McG would like to choose a game for us to play I'll set that up. There are all the variants, or bounty games. There's also now an option to do a game with web cam enabled if you fancy a go! 1st @McG £75 + PL Mug and Pens 2nd @muttley £45 3rd @Rivrd £30
